View 1 RepliesI installed the minimal-command line system from the kubuntu CD on my laptop, which is guess is roughly around 200mb after installation. I wish to install a Desktop Environment preferably KDE and I wanted to know how and where do I begin from? Do I need to have a working XORG prior to installation of KDE and do I also need to install Window mangers and e.t.c? What all packages/libraries and components do I need to install first? I'm really not sure where should I begin from.
Initially what I am trying to do is to have working GUI system,then later on I can install rest of the packages and software that I need, like office, GPU drivers, browser etc. Secondly,for a minimal KDE system,what metapackages are to be installed from this site? I believe kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace are required. [URL]

I tried installing VLC through Synaptic. However, i got the reply "all components could not be installed". VLC does not appear in the menus. All four software repositories have been ticked.

My basic task in the project is the power optimization/management. I am using a ZOTAC-IONITX computing platform (Intel ATOM CPU + NVIDIA ION GPU). The problems that I am currently facing are:
I am unable to model the power consumption of various components e.g., processor, GPU, hard drive, memory etc, since there seems to be no way to measure the power consumption of individual system components. Since I don't have a power consumption model, I cannot come up with a power optimization algorithm. I am currently working on Linux. Is there any way to measure/model the power consumption of individual system component?
I have already checked powertop. It doesn't tells the power (watts) consumed by a component (e.g., microprocessor). It just gives information about the power state the processor is in (However there is no way to change the power state by the user) and the processors that cause processor to wakeup.
Which hardware components tend to cause compatibility issues? And how do you select a generic option that might work with your hardware?
I don't currently have any problems but curious to find out if there is a sequence of steps.
I would like to try out fc10 on an old, k6-2 pc. Last night I tried to download the dvd, but firefox 'completed' the download with only 1.2/~3xg, and of course it didn't work.
I am trying a test net installation in VirtualBox, so far so good.
However, I would rather have a more complete installation on hand and I'm looking at the full install cd's --there are 6 of them.

Are all 6 required for a minimal install, or could I get by with one (or two, etc)? For example, with debian installation cds you can use just the first one -- the rest are just a complete set of packages for everything +kitchen sink.
I will be installing Natty using the alternative CD.My system has a separate Home partition.Do I need to erase the contents of the Root and Home partition with gparted or similar,prior to the fresh installation of Natty or will the installer take care of all that automatically?

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?
I would like to install Fedora 14 without any X11 components. I need it only like router/firewall, so I do not want to install any unnecessary modules. Also I do not want to download all DVD, but live media doesn't have any choices.
Is it possible to install Fedora without X11 desktop?
I just got a question from a customer(actually from a customer to my manager then to me) and he is asking the following question: What are the components that were installed with RHEL? It may sound like a silly question but to me it sounds vague. The main thing I am thinking about now is during install you can select three components: webserver software development and virtualisation.

Why would tools like this be excluded from the package? I prefer to use apt rather than compiling from source, to keep things neat and simple.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi used klamav to scan for virus. yes, klamav from the repository. the scan said it had found possible virus. ok so i removed them from /usr/lib. then i realized kalmav just removed important components to be able to boot 9.10 properly. my desktop is broke!! so what do i do? use klamav to scan another install of 9.10 and try to move the removed components from the new install to the broke?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently brought home an old Compaq server from work. I was told that it works fine. When I brought it home, I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 server from a cd. While it's trying to install, I get the message "Installation step failed. An installation step failed. You can try to run the following item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Load installer components from CD." I turned off the computer and tried it again several times. Each time the same message appears.

I'm looking online right now but if anyone knows of a Linux distro I can use to diagnose/ check hardware in that machine. Something that runs live would be preferable. I'm thinking knoppix and am reading about it right now.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am re-installing Ubuntu onto my desktop PC which has Windows 7, openSUSE 11.2 and Fedora Core 12. First I tried Ubuntu 9.10. Near the end of the installation the machine reboots and the monitor shows the following message:
"Ubiquity.components.partman failed - Exit code 10. Further info in /var/log/syslog"
Tried again with Ubuntu 10.04 beta2 with same problem.
How can I view and read /var/log/syslog if Ubuntu fails to be installed and therefore I cannot access this log?
I have an HTPC that was giving me insane amount of problems after 3 months of good use.

3x 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green (Raid-5)
In 9.10, the raid was working fine. I decided to fresh install Ubuntu 10.04 and I can't seem to start the raid array. In Disk Utility, the array shows up but when I try to start it I get the error "Not enough components to start the array"
I've tried to assemble the array using mdadm and the following:
mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdd1
This returns the following error mdadm: failed to create /dev/md0
I have no idea what to do now, and unfortunately I don't have any backups

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora 12 x64 on my 27" iMac 10,1. I have tried both the installation dvd and the gnome live cd (both x64 i did not try the x86). On the installation dvd I get as far as the menu giving me the boot/install options - I have tried to install both with a basic video driver and the regular install/upgrade option - both times it begins loading components for the installer program (/sbin/loader) etc. After it loads sbin/loader and mounts the partitions it freezes with half the screen being the terminal txt beforehand and the other half being just a standard fedora logo w/blue background. It is not much different when I try the live-cd the only different is it does the exact same thing when the timer for automatic login is done. Any possible command line arguments that I could use to stop the graphical corruption?

I'm running OpenSuse 11.0 in a lamp configuration with Apache 2. I configured Apache with the .conf files instead of YAST because I am running virtual hosts (that's another story).
My problem is that my server will not render the pages unless the permissions are set to 775 which I know is not necessary. This is also causing a problem because I am trying to install WordPress onto the server. WordPress will run, but it unable to upload images because it cannot create the directories required.
Apache2 is running as 755 with root as owner and www as group. I changed the owner of the htdocs sub-directories to myself, and created a group that has permissions to write to the directory. WordPress runs as my user and has the same permissions (775).
