I will be installing Natty using the alternative CD.My system has a separate Home partition.Do I need to erase the contents of the Root and Home partition with gparted or similar,prior to the fresh installation of Natty or will the installer take care of all that automatically?
View 5 RepliesI am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to completely erase my hard drive and install Ubuntu 10.04 on again fresh. I think some files have become corrupted from a power cut that I had last night whilst the laptop was plugged in (and turned on).
I'm not bothered about completely wiping the hard drive since there are no important files on it (at most there are just a lot of packages I downloaded from the repro...) I don't have any Windows installations either - it's just a simple; wipe the hard drive and reinstall all over again case
Ok. I have a media server running debian amd64. when I installed it I made separate partitions for root (/) home (/home) var (/var) and swap.
I'm adding some new hardware (mobo and ram) and want to reinstall debian. I would like to keep my home and var partitions intact and just reinstall everything in root (/) partition.
I'm unsure of how to do this during the installation. Do i need to format? how do I tell it to use the /var and /home partitions?
Having an issue with a fresh install which gets stuck at partitions formatting 33%. Tried different HDD's, 2 optical drives, 4 sticks of RAM, different SATA cable, disconnect floppy. Have tried both normal and alt cd images using different burn speeds.

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and I want to move to 10.10. The upgrade path would be very long so I want to do a fresh install. I have twisted a little bit my Gnome appearance (theme, icons in menu bar, etc.). I would like to install it, keeping all of my files in my home folder but using fresh visual settings from Maverick. I realize there is enough space in the root partition for expansion (see screen shot) but I want to be certain (some of the last updates have been over 100 MB). I have a dual boot 10.10 64 bit system with XP . There are two drives ; a 1 TB drive with Windows, Ubuntu and a NTFS data partition and a 2 TB drive for media which won't be touched by this operation. I have taken about 58 GB from my Windows partition and this now sits unallocated and ready to be used to expand the Ubuntu partitions. expanding these partitions (root and home) would be appreciated. I read bodhi.zazen' excellent tutorial on partitioning [URL] but I still am unsure how to go about this. I have a live Meerkat CD.

I have never created a cron job, and worse, I have never created a .sh file which, I think, is what I need to do.

I have a question - should I decide to ditch Ubuntu for Fedora I will want to install but keep my Home folder.Normally whenever I've reinstalled Ubuntu I've installed over top of my existing installation. I have 3 partitions:
1 - Root
2 - Swap
3 - Home
When I reinstall I normally format root and swap but keep home and choose my usual user name. hen I boot up after install all my settings for all my apps are retained.
If I install Fedora this way (keeping Home while formatting Root and Swap) will I get the same results?
I just installed Ubuntu 10.0.4 and it asked me only set up one application / os user credentials (which I did). After the installation, I came to know that I wasn't able to listen sound from the speakers. Now, in order to fix that issue; I've to install an upgraded driver for my sound card (which I got) but when I run the following command:
it is to create / remove some directories in usr/include/sound directory. user of this directory is root and i get the permissions denied message. I tried to switch as root user but authentication gets failed every time.
After a fresh install of Debian I came across an error Im hoping you guys can help me with. Ive searched for the error and it appears there are multiple reasons that could be causing it. To compound the problem, Im at work so I dont have the specific error messages....so I just installed Lenny (standard install, no desktop) using a USB installer and everything went very smooth. On first boot, the system paused while waiting for the root file system. After a minute or two it just errored out complaining it could not find the root file system and put me at a (vmlinuz) prompt?My guess is that I need to go into my bios and change my boot priority.. but again, thats just a guess.

Earlier today I installed a .cbr/.cbz file reader from root, that was also a .deb and it worked just fine. now I go to install google chrome and it says (Blue is my command, and red is the system response):
I checked under my USER GROUPS and Root is still set as root, and I haven't been using it unless I need to install with it to other directories, Should I be using another command to install? or is it a problem that may affect other aspects of my system? ... My biggest concern is not getting google in, I can wait for that ... I just wanna know why ROOT is under the impression it's not a superuser.
After a fresh install of opensuse 11.3 x86_64, using a NET install CD, I noticed that the boot disk layout has overlapping partitions. I've noticed one other post that mentioned this at the very end. Is this a known problem already? Or is there something I'm missing that makes this okay?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem mounting a vfat partition using fstab... If I don't use fstab and mount it manually, everything works fine. But if I add a line to fstab, it will mount, but will have root permission only - so I can't write to it. can mount another partition (ext4) through fstab and everything works fine. Just not sure why there's a problem with the vfat partion. Also, if after mounting it through fstab I try to unmount it, it gives an error saying only root can unmonut it.

When I go to edit the partitions, it won't let me do anything due to an apparent lack of a root filesystem. (I know this issue has been brought up and resolved in the past, but the usual solution (going into the validation.py file) isn't working for me, as there is no line in this one that says "if not root".)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a IBM T42 (using it now to write this) and a newer Lenovo T500 (with a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 on it). I want to take all of my programs and config of those programs, plus all my /home directory information/files/hidden files all over onto the new machine. There may be other stuff I need to take over to, and don't know enough about to comment here.
But basically I want my new system to look and work like my old system, with all the same programs and user data, all configured in the same way. Is there a way to do this over the network or another way? I can't even get the two systems to see each other over the network, even though Folder Sharing is enabled and (I think) all the right components are installed. I even checked to see if my user had permission to share files on both machines, and I do.
During the installation of 10.04 I opted to have my home folder encrypted. I no longer want my home folder to be encrypted. How may I achieve this ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo today I needed to switch from openSolaris to a viable OS on my workstation and decided to install openSUSE after having good experiences with it on my personal laptop. I ran into some problems partitioning one of the two hard disks installed on the system. I was limited on the amount of time I could spend at the office doing the install so I decided to use LVM on the one hard disk that seemed to work okay.
I picked LVM because although I don't know much at all about LVM, I at least know enough that it would allow me to expand the root and home partitions once I get the 2nd hard drive working correctly. So now that I've gotten the 2nd disk working okay, I've created two physical volumes on the 2nd drive, one to expand the root partition and one to expand the home partition. So, my question is, can I expand the root an home partitions while they are mounted or should I boot into a live CD environment before I expand the partitions? If I could expand them without booting into a different environment, that would be so great as I don't want to have to drive out to the office again before Monday. BTW, I am a new openSUSE user and an ex Ubuntu user. I loved the Ubuntu forums but had to switch because I do not agree with the direction that Ubuntu is taking.
