OpenSUSE Install :: List Available Of Core Applications Required To Function?

Apr 9, 2010

OpenSUSE 11.2 installation DVD has many many applications that are installed by default. How can I install just the minimum for a working system. As an excercise I am trying to build a Nas system which I can install into our Windows Active Directory at work and have user access controlled via an Active Directory user group. I have no need therefore for so many of the applications available. I have tried uninstalling some applications and have managed to remove some features that I infact needed to keep.just a minor thing like the Gnome interface (gee!). Is there a list available of core applications required to function etc. that would help me to streamline my build?

Software :: Get Installed Applications List And Applications Activity

May 25, 2009

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.

Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.

Is there a way to do this in C/C++.

I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

Fedora :: Repository List And List Of Installed Applications?

Feb 17, 2010

I understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed? The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? SELinux settings?

OpenSUSE :: Get Application To Utilize More Than One Core In Multi-core Setup?

Mar 27, 2011

I have a command line OCR program called OCR Shop XTR (Vividata corp) that I am using on a system with a 6-core AMD chip. I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).

I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?

Here is the output of uname -a:Linux linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 i686 athlon i386 GNU/LinuxAnd here is the output for one of the cores from cat /proc/cpuinfo:processor : 5

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Repository Signature Required For New Updates

Jan 13, 2011

Today, shortly after booting my OpenSUSE 11.3 I got this popup. [URL]. I guess it was caused by the Updater Applet when checking the repos for new updates. But what does it mean? Why do I get this now and not when adding the repo. It seems to belong to the filesystems repo and I have indeed added that some time ago (in order to install davfs2). I'm not sure what it means to accept a signature.

Normally with public key infrastructure, you need to accept other's public keys or certificates containing their public keys. And before doing so you need to verify the fingerprint, otherwise the whole procedure is useless, because it might be a fake certificate / man in the middle talking to you. Once you have accepted (trusted) the public key (or a certificate containing it), the system will check signatures for you.

So the question "do you want accept this signature" sounds weird to me. In openSUSE repos I have come across fingerprints many times before. But whenever I have searched google in order to verify the fingerprint I have not received any useful hit. I would have expected that valid keys and their fingerprints are listed on some web site. It appears there are three instances of package signing keys ... but there has not been any answer.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3: Will The 'only One Core Seen' Be Addressed

Jun 27, 2010

It's known that with previous iterations, up to and including 11.2, with certain motherboards ( I can only speak for Asus/Abit ) a quad ( or duo ) core cpu can only be installed with acpi-off or similar options; this leads to only one core running in OpenSUSE, although the board itself declares 4 cores run.And this seems to mean that various other unimportant ( for a desktop ) acpi functions are affected, including the os system clock.

Typing top or cat /proc/cpuinfo always shows only one core, and although the computer is fine, it seems a pointless state of affairs. Googling shows various suggestions, including removing acpi=off or noapic in the boot options and substituting pci=nommconf, or changing the kernel to an SMP kernel ( which is probably out-of-date as advice now ); still, I can live with it in 11.2: I just wondered if 11.3 addresses this installation problem. Or will any future editions address it ?Whilst one can live with it, the initial impossibility of installing ( with no clue as to why it shan't install ) must have put off a deal of people from even going forward with OpenSUSE ( or any similarly affected distro ).

OpenSUSE Install :: DELL Latitude E6410 - Core I7 M620 With Integrated Intel HD Graphics - Blank Screen

Aug 19, 2010

I have been unable to get both opensuse 11.2 and 11.3 32 bit versions work properly on my DELL Latitude E6410 laptop. With both 11.2 and 11.3 KDE Live CDs I get no graphical display when I attempt to boot into the Live system. VESA mode does not help either, only text mode works. So I installed the system in text mode but during the first boot the screen went blank again.

One peculiar thing is that 11.1 installs and boots fine, what gives? Is this even supported or I shouldn't even try to bother getting this setup to work? Has anyone been able to run opensuse 11.3 on a Core i7 integrated Intel graphics system with X system working?

Side notes: This guide assumes you want to wipe out Windows XP and run only openSUSE. Sorry, I'm a Gates hater.

I still haven't figured out how to configure the function keys support for volume controls and wireless. I'm hoping the "eeepc kernel module" mentioned by malcolmlewis here: Suse on my Asus 1005HA - openSUSE Forums will do the trick.

Ubuntu :: Startup Applications List Locked?

Feb 24, 2010

About a month ago, I had something go very wrong in my Karmic and my account (with an encrypted home dir) was essentially inaccessible. But I was eventually able to create a new account, and retrieve all my data, but now, for some reason, I cannot edit the 'Startup Applications'.

I open its window and make any changes (which the window seems to accept), but then when I hit close, and restart it, it has been reset to everything I had set from my other account. Which makes little sense.

After that problem, I did have some trouble with permissions of certain files, and am afraid that I inadvertently gave up permissions on my startup applications, but can't imagine what I'd have to do to fix it.some guidance?
