Fedora :: Strange Packages Required To Install Skype

Nov 16, 2009

I've added a couple of extra repos in my x86_64 Fedora 11 KDE installation.Namely, skype and rpmfusion and no rawhide stuff.I've asked then to install skype (Skype 2.0.0.72).While I was expecting a lot of packages because skype has decided not to support 64bit environments, I have found some very weird packages within the 79 item list.

General :: Authentication Is Required To Install Software Packages For Knoppix

Jul 24, 2011

I have had some help with root password su and sudo su, but I can not find the correct password to install or remove programs. I keep getting the same message ' Authenticate' Authentication is required to install software packages. An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges.Authentication is required to perform this action. Then it asks for a password, I've tried enter, seacats, knoppix, user, and my root password. None of these work I seem to be a second user and not the owner.

My Linux language is very low, but I am learning, right now in order to find or try to install software I go through the startup menu> preferences> software center. Is there another way to find and install software that doesn't require and authentication password? If so where do I find out the steps to do this? Hands on is always the best teacher.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To 10.04 And Strange With Skype Sound?

Sep 14, 2010

I've upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and everything works fine but. I use skype (2.1.0.81) a lot and I can make calls and receive them as normal with normal mic/sound levels. When I get a notification the sound is so faint its almost inaudible. Clicking "Test sound" in notifications has the same effect - almost inaudible sounds (I thought they were not working at all until I turned the volume right up).

I tried completely removing and reinstalling skype through synaptic to no avail. All the Sound devices in skype are set to "PulseAudio Server (local)" - there are no other options coming up. "Make a test call" works fine and the skype sounds are all at the expected level. Real calls are fine too, so long as I notice them and respond. "Make a test sound" is silent.

Likewise, testing the event in Notifications plays the sound really quietly. Allocating different sounds makes no difference - the level is still really low so I can't work around the problem that way. Anyone know how I can correct the ringer volume without blowing out my eardrums on an actual call?

Slackware :: Slackware64-13.1: A Minimal Multilib For Skype Required?

Nov 26, 2010

I am running Slackware64-13.1 on my laptop. I need to install skype on it. Searching this forum suggests that I install Alien Bob's multilib [URL] However, skype is the only 32-bit package I need and I will not need to compile any 32-bit software. So what is the minimal multilib install (the minimal set of 32-bit libraries) that make it possible for the 32-bit Skype to run on a 64-bit system? Will running

Code:

ldd /usr/bin/skype

on my 32-bit desktop machine provide me that minimal list of 32-bit packages? Also, will the installation of these libraries somehow interefere with the original 64-bit system?

Debian :: Minimun Packages Required To Build Kde Apps

Jan 15, 2011

Debian squeeze amd_65, using gde3/gnome.I'd like to use KMyMoney, but the latest packages (v4.5.2) and not the v3.9.8/test version that's in Synaptic Package Manager.I'd rather not install every package that contains *kde* in the name, but I'm more than willing to install the minimum required to compile and run them.Trying to build kmymoney v4.5.2. After some google searches on the specific errors, I initially learned about apt-file and the find feature.

I'm unable to determine what package I need for 'Boost', and although apt-file reports that kdepimlibs5-dev is the package for gpgme - I still have no files called QGpgmeConfig.cmake or qgpgme-config.cmake, and the log still shows 'Could NOT find QGpgme'.Any pointers on what package(s) I'm missing, or other ways to determine what I need?

General :: How To Know Required Packages Of One Package Before Installing In Ubuntu?

Jan 30, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop. And I am going to install mediaplayer from its "*.deb" file, But it requires a lot of other packages and each of those packages needs others and so on.Since I do not have internet connection on my Ubuntu and my internet connection is in Win XP, so I should download these packages and then check them in my Ubuntu and see what other packages it needs and download them and so on.

It is a very time consuming task. If I could find out what are all the required packages I could download all of them at once and then I could install them by "sudo dpkg -i *".Therefore I am wondering if there is a way to know which packages are the required ones for a typical package, my work would be much more easier.

Fedora :: Getting Skype To Work On 14 - No "yum Install Skype---" Command

Dec 15, 2010

I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.

Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!

It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.

Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?

I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.

General :: Building System - Required Packages / Libraries And Components

Jan 4, 2010

I installed the minimal-command line system from the kubuntu CD on my laptop, which is guess is roughly around 200mb after installation. I wish to install a Desktop Environment preferably KDE and I wanted to know how and where do I begin from? Do I need to have a working XORG prior to installation of KDE and do I also need to install Window mangers and e.t.c? What all packages/libraries and components do I need to install first? I'm really not sure where should I begin from.

Initially what I am trying to do is to have working GUI system, then later on I can install rest of the packages and software that I need, like office, GPU drivers, browser etc. Secondly, for a minimal KDE system, what metapackages are to be installed from this site? I believe kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace are required. [URL]

Fedora Installation :: FC10 I386 - How Many CDs - Of 6 - Required For Min. Install

Apr 18, 2009

I would like to try out fc10 on an old, k6-2 pc. Last night I tried to download the dvd, but firefox 'completed' the download with only 1.2/~3xg, and of course it didn't work.

I am trying a test net installation in VirtualBox, so far so good.

However, I would rather have a more complete installation on hand and I'm looking at the full install cd's --there are 6 of them.

[url]

Are all 6 required for a minimal install, or could I get by with one (or two, etc)? For example, with debian installation cds you can use just the first one -- the rest are just a complete set of packages for everything +kitchen sink.

Fedora :: Install Skype From Repository

Here is the new version that works with Fedora 13. It installs the latest Skype from the Skype repository (apparently the Skype repo was outdated in the past, but now it contains the same version as on the Skype website). First, create the skype.repo file in the zq3tf/etc/yum.repos.d directory:

Third, one may have to install a few libraries that Skype needs. If you're interested, you can find out more about these libraries with ldd /usr/share/skype and with yum provides *..., but this is not required for installation. All you need to do is (got this from Krellan's post):
