Server :: Ubuntu Install DVD Contains All Required Software - Physical Setup

May 30, 2011

I have a government website hosted in third party hosting. but now they want to setup their own Ubuntu server. Now my Question is -

1. What hardware do I need? like -
A) SERVER
B) KVM Switch etc etc.. really i don't know how many hardware need to setup a server. Please provide me a list.

2. Does the standard Ubuntu Server installation DVD contains all the required software for Linux web hosting ?

The hardware part is very important. What's more hardware need to set up a server.

General :: Setup A SSH Key Between Servers So No Password Is Required?

Nov 2, 2010

I am trying to set up a SSH key between servers so no password is required when I have to "scp" files between the two. This is what I have tried so far but still requires a password:

Code:
ssh-keygen -t rsa
scp /home/<user>/.ssh/id_rsa <server2.com>:/home/<user>/.ssh/athorized_keys

When I scp after this I wasn't expecting to need a password but it is still prompting. Now I have used this same method before and it has worked great. The only difference this time is server2 is not in the same cage.

CentOS 5 :: Get The System Booted To A Bare Minimum Required To Install Chef (Server Management Software)?

Aug 20, 2010

I am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system. If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.

All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

Server :: How To Tell If RH System Is Virtual Or Physical?

Feb 11, 2011

This may seem like a silly question but I have many servers and sometimes we forget when we login if it physical or virtual running on a VMware system. This makes a diffrence when I try to get a console access etc. So I wanted to know before if its physical or VM.yes I know i can change motd once i get the info or make a list etc. There are many ways not OS related for me to find this info out. But I was wondering if there was a Linux command that I could use when I ssh to a system to check if its physical or logical?I have inventory information etc and vm vsphere to check but that can be time consuming if I just want to check something quick.

uname -a or something like that that would tell me would be cool. I am thinking there is no command as Linux really does not care if its running Vm or physical.

Ubuntu Networking :: VPN Client And Samba/SSH Server On One Physical Machine?

Jun 3, 2010

I'd like to access a samba/SSH server which itself is connected to a VPN Server, therefore acting as a VPN Client. As soon as the VPN Connection is established, samba and ssh connections to this VPN Client get a timeout. But not all of them.

To get a better understanding I made an overview. The first one is a general network overview, without any VPN Connection, the second one with the VPN Connection established.

Network Overview without VPN
I can access the server in several ways:
*From the router via ssh (router runs ipcop with busybox)
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)

Everything is working as it should.

Now the server that runs ssh and samba service connects to a VPN Server on the Internet, this is also working fine. Now it gets weird. The only samba/SSH connection that is still working is ssh directly from the router to the server. Everything else gets a timeout:
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Network Overview with VPN active

Why is that? It seems from the little understanding I have of vpn and networking, that incoming packages (like samba request from the laptop) don't get send directly back over eth0 but over the vpn connection. This seems somewhat logic, BUT ssh from the router is still working. Why from the router and not from the laptop? I really can't get my head around it.

Configuration Overview

tldr; One Client acts as VPN Client and samba/SSH Server. As soon as the VPN Connection is established samba/SSH stop working, but only partially.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Server :: Two Physical Apache Hosts Served By One Machine

Oct 19, 2009

Is there some way that I can use apache/iptables to serve both of my servers through the same basic domain? I'm not talking about VirtualHosts either, I don't believe ( despite the fact that's all I can find anything to read about on Google when searching for this ).

Anyway, the problem is that I have a TorrentFlux php torrent-client that I run so I can add stuff to the download when I'm not around. I don't want to put this on my regular webpage server because there's just not enough diskspace in that machine. On the other hand, I don't want to replace that server all-together because the other machine is my desktop and would not make a reliable host.

So my idea was that there could be some way to have the apache2 server on my dedicated server redirect a subdirectory in its webroot to the webroot of my desktop's TorrentFlux server, but over standard HTTP ports so that it is more like the server is serving up the content of my desktop server through its HTTP service, instead of simply redirecting.

The reason I want to do this is because so far I have to use the TorrentFlux server on a nonstandard port so my dedicated server can still host its own things on port 80, but I've been running into several situations where the browsers I want to use do not support the nonstandard port such as with some instances of IE or the browser on my BlackBerry.

Anyway, I'm not looking for a step by step or anything ( though it couldn't hurt ) but I just need some ideas on what I could search for to get some better ideas. There's probably some term for what I want to do I'm not even aware of that would help me greatly.

Runnining Ubuntu 7.04 and apache 2.2.4 along with shorewall 4.0 as my routing/firewall software.

OpenSUSE Install :: Adding A New Physical HD?

Jul 2, 2010

I've opensuse 11.2 installed and running. I have separate mount points for /, home, srv. I have two physical HDs of total 160gb in my system. Now my / partition is nearly full 91-93%. I'm thinking of adding another HD. I cannot figure out how to transfer data after installing the new drive. I plan to move /srv and /home from the main physical disk to the new disk and then add the space freed from under /srv and /home to the / partition. I understand the procedure how to add the drive, how to partition it and so on. I need some help in understanding how to shift the data from one physical drive to the other without losing any simlinks and data of course. I have a virtual host web server running on my machine, so you can understand how difficult it would be if I'd need to do all the linking manually again or worst case if I'd lose any data.

Applications :: Cannot Install Webmin On Dummy Server Setup

Feb 7, 2011

I have a dummy server set up in which I am trying to install webmin (which I have done several times in the past and remb it being straightforward and pretty simple!) however when trying to install I keep getting errors.

I install all the perl packages as required :-
sudo apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl
After downloading webmin I try and install it:-
sudo dpkg -i webmin_ 1.530 _all.deb

This is where I encounter errors regarding apt-show-versions saying that it is not installed.I try and install it but an error appears stating that apt-show-versions is not installed. So I try and install apt-show-versions and that fails as it states that there is libapt package missing too. When I try to force install both - unable to fetch some archives but maybe run apt-get update or fix missing....It just seems like I am going around in circles (as I have run apt-get update and have run the commands as root...)

Server :: Unable To Setup A NIS Server Setup On CentOS System

Jan 19, 2010

We are trying to set up a NIS server on a CentOS system. We need to have a NIS server which can provide NIS authentication to a couple of clients. We are practically new to all this stuff.

Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".

I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .

Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?

Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?

Also to add-on, while executing the ypinit command we faced the following error:

At this point, we have to construct a list of the hosts which will run NIS servers. localhost.localdomain is in the list of NIS server hosts. Please cont inue to add the names for the other hosts, one per line. When you are done with the list, type a <control D>. next host to add: localhost.localdomain next host to add:

The current list of NIS servers looks like this:

Is this correct? [y/n: y] y

General :: Deploy Windows Onto Server With No Physical Access To Machine

Jul 30, 2010

I need to deploy Windows Server 2008 R2 onto a server that is currently running Linux. Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.

I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).

We want to set up a Linux server (hosting Git or later SVN repositories) which should have all stored data strongly encrypted, so that if one steals the server the data cannot be read. For example, our notebooks have all important data stored on a "true-crypted" partition.

We plan to access it with SSH private keys and only after successful login should the data be readable. The server would be located in our office, shut down at night and not be connected to the Internet directly, but only accessible in our intranet.

Server :: PAE Kernel (2.6.18) Fails To Swap With Large Amounts Of Physical Ram?

We're load testing some of our larger servers (16GB+ RAM), and when memory starts to run low they are kicking off the oomkiller instead of swapping. I've checked swapon -s (which says we're using 0 bytes out of 16GB of swap), I've checked swappiness (60), I've tried upping the swap to 32GB, all to no avail. If we pull some RAM, and configure the box with 8GB of physical ram and 16 (or more) GB of swap, sure enough it dips into it and is more stable than a 16GB box with 16 or 32GB of swap.
