CentOS 5 :: Install Libsemanage - Devel Required Before Update?

Apr 4, 2009

Thought I would write it down first. Some other packages are still upgrade in progress

libselinux-utils
libsemanage-devel
libgcj-devel

these three has to be installed before some other packages can be updated. I think dependency check did not find them out, somehow.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Update On Laptop - Error "Can't Install 'xubuntu-desktop' It Was Impossible To Install A Required Package"

Oct 6, 2010

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:

* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

CentOS 5 :: Get The System Booted To A Bare Minimum Required To Install Chef (Server Management Software)?

Aug 20, 2010

I am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system.If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.

All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

@admin-tools
@base
@core

Jan 5, 2011

The OFED installer says that it wants the sysfsutils-devel rpm, and we are not finding it. Do we just need to set up the right yum repository to locate it? OR - has CentOS 5.5 replaced this rpm with libsysfs-devel or similar?

I show # rpm -qa | grep sysfs
sysfsutils-2.0.0-6
libsysfs-2.0.0-6

This is on a new Rocks 5.4 installation that includes CentOS 5.5.

I found out that to compile my new kernel - which requires 'qmake' - I need to install the "qt-devel" package. Doing so - according to the package manager - would require uninstalling 81 packages and downgrading almost 50 other packages.

I'm running under Fedora 14 w/ KDE and it's asking to remove things like Amarok and OpenOffice. Am I missing a step or something?

Fedora Servers :: Install Of Httpd-devel Hurts Performance?

Jun 7, 2010

On F13 i386 inside Virtualbox. Host is a Win7 x64 box.

This may just be more idle curiosity than anything else since the server still works. . . but it's really bothering me because I can't explain it.

My (limited) understanding is that the devel files are just the source files and shouldn't actually affect peformance.

Yet, prior to installing httpd-devel (and its dependencies), /etc/init.d/httpd restart takes about 2 seconds total. After installing httpd-devel, the "stopping" phase of the httpd restart take 5-7 seconds (which seems really long when you're just sitting there waiting on it.

yum install httpd-devel also installs the following for dependencies:
db4-cxx
db4-devel
cyrus-sasl-devel
apr-devel
apr-util-devel
openldap-devel
expat-devel

All but one of those are devel files as well. And here's the real kicker: Uninstalling them through YUM doesn't put things back to normal (even after reboot).

I'm no linux expert. But I wouldn't think installing devel files would have this effect or any effect like this since they're just source code files (?). Can anyone explain what's happening or give me tips on how I can watch the apache process stop and see what's hanging it up?

Ubuntu :: Increasing Frequency Of Reboots Required After Update?

Sep 30, 2010

Just a random question out of curiosity and probably ignorance. But why have updates started requiring a reboot almost every single time recently? I'm using Lucid, but the rate of required reboots was already on the up in Jaunty. As far as I understood, you should only really need to reboot if something's been changed in the Kernel - is that wrong?

Surely the updates can include restarting of demons or just the software if need be, it's starting to become like windows in this respect....

CentOS 5 :: Boot Error After Yum Update On Fresh Install

Jul 21, 2011

I have installed Centos 5.6 on a fresh VPS. After install I ran yum update command. After update was finished I noticed a message saying "Your system kernel may have been updated. Current kernel (2.6.18-238.e15) has been changed to : 2.6.18-238.12.1.e15)". When I reboot, I see two boot option in GRUB. one is Centos 5.6 (2.6.18-238.12.1.e15) Default and other is Centos 5.6 (2.6.18-238.e15). When Centos boots from default, it fails with fatal error. But when I boot with other option, the system boots as normal.

I need to know how to resolve this situation. Why yum update results in Kernel update and 2nd option in GRUB boot loader. and why Centos refuses to boot with update Kernel.
