General :: Network Starts Then Drops When CLI Login Screen Appears?

May 17, 2010

I've restarted a server a couple times, and during the boot process pings respond when it brings up eth0, but then when i get to the command line login screen, the pings die. once i log in and do a ./network start the pings respond again, so i'm guessing its dying or not set to start automatically maybe? What should I check?

Fedora :: Unable To Boot - Emblem In The Centre Of Screen Appears And Starts To Turn From White To Dark Blue

Dec 7, 2010

I am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.

In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.

When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:

I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.

Ubuntu :: Login Screen Appears On Wrong Monitor?

Jan 16, 2010

I've been working my butt off all day now trying to get the nvidia drivers installed and then (the hard part) get dual screen to work properly with them installed. Finally I've gotten to the point where both of my screens are working perfect but now the login screen is on the second monitor instead of the first monitor for some reason I do not know.

Here's my xorg.conf:

Code:

# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@crested) Sun Feb 1 20:25:37 UTC 2009

Ubuntu :: Blinking Cursor For 12 Secs Before Login Screen Appears

Oct 20, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside my Windows 7 os in a dual boot config. I used an installation disk and allowed the ubuntu installer to do all the resizing of partitions, installing of grub, etc. The install is working great and I haven't needed to boot my windows os since which is great. The only complaint I have is that it takes it takes a bit longer to boot than windows did for some reason. The culprit is a blinking cursor that comes up and remains for about 12-15 seconds before the grub menu appears. I already altered the boot option for the grub menu so that ubuntu is default and the option to select another os only appears for 3 seconds but I don't think this is related since the delay occurs before those options appear. I'm not really sure what is causing the delay. Is it looking for the loader? If so, is there a way to edit the configuration so doesn't have to search? As I mentioned, the install is running great otherwise.

Fedora :: After New Kernel - When Start Up And The Login Screen Appears It No Longer Says My Username

May 22, 2010

Well, to start off my graphics card didn't work but I got that fixed.

When I start up and the login screen appears it no longer says my username and Other.. under it. It only displays Other.. I have to click that type in my username and then my password. When I log on the Auto Bug Reporting tool pops up and says 3 things crashed

I can't change my system time, shutdown or reboot under system or my username in the top right hand corner. I have to su and manually type reboot or shutdown to shutdown. It is like the computer is completely restricting me from using it.

When I try to get into my firewall an error comes up

I cannot mount anything:

OpenSUSE Install :: Normal User Cannot Login - Screen Blinks - A Black Page Appears

Jun 27, 2010

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

The problem I'm having is that when I turn my computer on, the main display is black, and all the load up information is output to the second display. Then, when I get to the log in screen, it is also on the second display.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Logging In The Screen Remains In The Login Splash And A Small Terminal Appears In The Upper Left Corner

Jan 23, 2010

recently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.

so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.

Ubuntu :: When Turn On The Computer, The GRUB Menu Appears, Press Enter, Then A Little Flashing Underscore Appears On The Screen?

Dec 21, 2010

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically. Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

General :: FTP Or Rsync Transfer Drops Network Connection

Apr 23, 2011

I'm using Scientific Linux on a laptop, connecting to a debian server on my LAN via a basic BT HomeHub router. When starting a file transfer with ftp or rsync from the laptop my connection is dropped, every time, after a couple of seconds. I have to reset my network adaptor and restart my network manager (wicd in this case) in order to get network connectivity back. I had a very similar problem before - [URL]. On this occasion my workaround was to replace NetworkManager with yast. I am now using SL though so no yast available, and I am not using NetworkManager any more anyway.

Fedora :: FC9: Forgot - Partition Doesn't Work - Can't Login At The LUKS Login After Grub Starts

Feb 15, 2010

My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

Ubuntu :: GDM Login Starts And Then Goes Back To Login

Feb 7, 2011

I just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 this morning and after the upgrade I can't log in via GDM. If I log in it seems to work and the screen goes black, but then it goes right back to the login screen.I can't figure out what is throwing the signal, but the interesting thing is that if I stop GDM and log in on the console, I can run startx and my session runs fine (I'm typing this message from firefox). Any ideas on how to determine what is throwing the signal? I tried poking around in /var/log but I can't find anything that seems relevant.

CentOS 5 :: Ssh Login Drops Letter E From Input At The Prompt?

Dec 3, 2010

A strange problem has surfaced with my CentOS 5.5 Rackspace Cloud Server. I was doing OK until today. For some strange reason, whenever I login to the server, using ssh and pub/priv key authorization, or password authorization for that matter, the letter E (that's an uppercase 'e') does not echo at the prompt line, it just beeps like an error. At the login prompt, before signing in, the letter E is echoed to the terminal window. I'm using an iMac, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the standard Mac terminal application.

This behavior does not occur when using the terminal app locally, i.e., logged into the iMac, and all other applications on the Mac are OK with 'E's. To further test the issue, I used the Java console app that Rackspace provides through a browser (I use Firefox, latest revision). Before logging in, the login prompt will accept and echo 'E'. As soon as I authenticate and get to a system prompt, anytime I press a Shift-e, I get a beep and no echo to the terminal command line. It doesn't matter who I login as, root or another user.

To further confuse things, if I start up an instance of nano in that very same terminal window, nano accepts and echoes the 'E'! Using nano, I've created a short bash script file:

#!/bin/bash
echo "ABCDEFG"

and it echoes properly when run.

Any clues as to where I might look to resolve this bizarre behavior?

My getinfo.sh system specs are here here.

Ubuntu :: GDM Starts - No Login Box - Can't Login

May 1, 2010

I was helping a friend of mine upgrade his system from 9.10 to 10.04. The upgrade went okay and he was able to use Lucid last night.

He has a dual boot with Windows 7, which was broken during the upgrade. I was able to help him fix that, using the instructions at [URL]

So the Grub issue is not the problem. However, after fixing his Grub install, he now cannot log into Ubuntu.

He selects the current kernel from the Grub menu, and the system starts up as expected. The splash screen that generally has the login box on it comes up - but no login box with user names and prompt for password never displays.

He can press CTRL-ALT-F2 and login from a terminal, but has no option to log into GDM.

I've gone through the usual dpkg-reconfigure gdm and had him reboot. Still no luck.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
