Today for strange reason, one of my Ubuntu 64 bit server Linux VM failed to start ? it stopped in the FSCK scan status with the error as attached. few days back I've added new hard disk successfully and format it as sdb5 without problem.
View 3 RepliesThe HDD is a 500GB internal SATA, The smart claims that the "file system is not clean" but is still green.FSCK ran a few errors and using fsck i copied a new superblock from a backup location, It still won't let me mount and FSCK is still trying to fix a TON of errors. I'm sorry I don't know any of this yet, but I'm concerned that FSCK could be destroying the data on the drive, for example photos and other important things. FSCK is coming with a lot of things to fix, It's gone from trying to fix errors in free blocks of group #1 to over #3000.. Is this safe? Will this work? Can I get rid of whatever caused this problem in the first place?

I was having trouble writting to the drive and unmounted it to preform a fchsk, however now when ever I try to mount it I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Does anyone know who I can repair the drive and retrive data?
After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?

I've had some problems and questions when installing and configuring Debian, now everything seems very smooth, but still I can't find answer to one question. My machine is headless and I allways use SSH to it. I have several partitions on machine so if one of them fails on booting time with fsck, I need to press CTRL+D combination to continue. In that case I need to go to the machine with monitor and keyboard and press that combination. Is there any way to automatically continue for example after 30 seconds ? Then I could log in to the system and check log files what is wrong. How can I do that ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have bunch of partitions on my Debian server installation, so I was experimenting with partitions and saw that is one partition fails fsck on booting time, system waits for root password or CTRL+D key combination. The problem is that my Debian machine is headless and I use only SSH to it. So if fsck fails, I can't to login to SSH (off course, because it is not loaded at this time). So I need to go with monitor and keyboard to machine and press CTRL+D.One option is to disable disk checking at startup by changing fstab file. I don't like this option. Is there any possibility to auto continue booting Debian machine ?

After upgrading from opensuse 11.1 to 11.2 I get the following error messages while booting the system caused by the initial filesystem check routines:
ERROR: Couldn't open /dev/null (Too many open files)
ext2fs_check_if_mount: Too many open files while determining whether ... is mounted.
fsck.ext3: Too many open files while trying to open ...
I found a new version of the e2fsprogs at the OBS package claiming to fix this problem. But installing this new version did not solve my problem.
Here some information about the affected system:
Operating System:openSUSE 11.2 (i586)
Installed e2fsprogs:e2fsprogs-1.41.11-4.1.i586
Number of LVs:35 (all ext3)
I can only boot if I comment out some of the filesystems in my /etc/fstab. It seems that the number of filesystems must be less or equal 32.
Running ubuntu server (ie no gui) but suspect this might be a general problem.
With the machine booted from the hard drive, if I run fdisk -l I get an invalid partition table message code...
Unable to read the contents of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable.
How do I correct this error?
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed (installed xubuntu on top and that is what I run but should not be an issue) on a laptop and it runs fine but I am giving it to my daughter so I wanted to install windows as well, and dual boot, so she could play a couple of games that she has. When I booted with gparted cd it shows the information icon beside my partition (have 2 one swap sda1 and one for ubuntu sda2) and everything I attempt to do tells me the superblock and all backups are bad. I am not sure how this can be since the system boots and runs fine.
In gparted I can't run dumbe2fs or e2fsck without getting the error but when I do dumpe2fs in the system it seems fine. I am pretty sure I used ext2 or ext3 as a filesytem as it is an older laptop so ext2 is what I usually run with. Maybe I just let ubuntu install whatever it wanted this time, I can't remember for sure which I chose during this install. have been backing up all the data to move it off anyway so reinstalling won't be a big issue. I had checked out how to reinstall grub2 after doing the windows install so thought I was all prepared but apparently I was not that prepared.
I was trying to move my home partition on Ubuntu, and the computer hibernated on me. I restarted it up on the live disk to survey the damage, to find that the home partition, according to fsck, "Superblock has an invalid journal (inode Clear? <y>"
It cannot be mounted, either.
what does this error message mean? im trying to mount an ipod in disc mode. let me know if there is a way to manually mount it to get around this. but not too technical, the simpler the language, the easier i will understand it.

I am running Debian squeeze and I am trying to install hplip-3.10.5 so I can use my new HP Photosmart C4750 printer.I downloaded the automatic installer and ran it and it gave me the following error message:

I just installed F12 lastnight and I went to run updates and the update manager said that there were unexpected errors and could not continue. I tried again today and same results. There are something like 321Mb of updates to run so...would be nice to get this machine updated.

Here's my problem: While choosing to compress certain folders from within Windows 7, I marked the boot manager as 'compressed'. Now, when I try to boot, I'm not able to boot into Windows 7, or any other OS (I get an error: bootmgr is compressed, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue, which restarts the system and the same cycle continues.
I have a Windows 7 + open SUSE + Ubuntu 10.04 LTS wubi install boot setup. To complicate things, its a laptop, and the DVD drive is conked. Is there any way I can boot into any of my OS's? If not using a live boot, can I, perhaps make a bootable USB flash drive, boot into it and uncompress the boot manager ? Note: I'm typing this from another desktop, and I do not have Windows installed on this.

I suspect the disk manager pysdm that i had just installed today and it had crash during the previous session. The /etc/fstab file does not exist anymore and i cant rename the fstab.bak because the disk is read-only even for my root user

I was upgrading from lenny to squeeze. At the apt-get dist-upgrade step, at some point (after upgrading and configuring) it tried to create a new certificate for my mail server but creation of the certificate failed, dpkg reported an error and the whole process exited with error. So I rebooted the machine and issued again apt-get dist-upgrade but now the certificate was created successfully . After that it upgraded mysql-client and the process finished.
But I don't know if configuring of the upgraded packages has stopped at the point where dpkg stopped. I suppose so, because very few packages were configured at that point. Is the solution to run dpkg-reconfingure -a (or -u ?) or dpkg --confingure -a or something else ? (dpkg has the PACKAGE STATES)
dpkg --configure --pending gives me no package for configuration.PS: At least I hope that all packages were upgraded and a few were not configured. Is there a way to confirm that all packages were upgraded ?

This is just a files sharing partition, it is not a system partition.
Is there any option to always ignore any errors and continue boot?
I have an issue with normal boot (fail safe boot doesn't have this problem). The boot process just stops and nothing happens, I just see the green background, the white lizard and no moving progress bar. I've given it about 40min without touching it, but nothing happened. If I press escape, the last log print says its mounting/mounted the hard drive. Not until I touch the head pad or press a key, it wakes up and the boot procedure continues. I once had a similar problem on opensuse 11.1 which could require much tickling before booting up completely. This was never seen on 10.3, 11.0 and 11.2, but now its back in 11.3.

But today WXP refuses to boot, when the progress bar appears, the system boots automatically. The WXP CD doesn't help, the repair console doesn't let me run chkdsk or anything (dir C: gives an error about listing addresses or something like that). Is there any way to use fsck or anything in Linux to repair the WXP NTFS partition?
