how to use or is there any drivers to be installed?
I did an inplace upgrade on my Dell Latitude X1 from Fedora 14 to 15 using dist-sync as per instructions on the website. It was not entirely smooth but I believe all the packages are now present and correct. Initially, about half the packages were still on f14 and the machine barely booted. I booted single user (nothing else was possible) and persuaded yum to fetch & install the rest.I was using wicd on 14 to connect wirelessly and it "just worked". I used wicd because I found NetworkManager didn't work.
On upgrade to 15, wicd now fails, and NetworkManager still does.icd i get an authentication failure, though the pw is correct. The only clue in the logs I can see is that wicd complains of not finding python-iwscan, and doesn't seem happy in using dhclient. Of course p-iwscan isn't in Fedora. Is p-iwlib similar? For wlassistant onnect failed.NetworkManager is currently refusing to acknowledge the existence of wireless on the machine, though occasionally it has addmitted the possibility. Then however I can neither scan for an SSID nor enter one manually ** Using iwconfig and setting the key manually *appears* to connect to the AP, but dhclient won't get IP data for it (if I ask nicely, it appears to try but isn't transmitting anything)The wireless card is an Intel ipw2200 chipset built into the X1. The ethernet port is working ok now, using a Broadcom chip.
How to make the mics work on a Dell XPX M1330 laptop. This seems to be a common problem with built in mics on laptops. I've tried all the obvious things with alsamixer and pulseaudio.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I install F14 on my desktop, everything works 100%. I can open up the Add/Remove Software search for Thunderbird for example and install it. When I install F14 on my laptop (Dell D820), Thunderbird doesn't show up when I search, and when I look at the software sources, nothing is checked. When I try to enable it, it says could not contact fedora and it will be disabled. as to what is different between the two installs?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to have UNIX or Linux on my laptop but I found that the wireless did not work on all the ones I tried. I have not tried again for over 6 months but don't have the time to experiment. It took me a week straight last time, I tried PCBSD (8.1), Ubuntu, OpenSUSE (11.3), and various others. The laptop was just released then, so I can understand why all the drivers might not have been compatible then.
I am hoping someone else has successfully added a distribution and can tell me which.

Also, if any one can point to exact process to connect to wireless Lan using fedora12.
I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).
All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.
The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?
The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.
I have Dell Inspiron 1545. It works fine on wired but fails on wireless.
I am using wicd as an interface.
It always comes up with the following error: Connection Failed: Bad password.
I have checked the passwords in both wicd and the router.
They seem to be the same. Am I missing something ?

I have my Linux laptop running Katatonic Koala at the moment. It is connected via CAT5 to a switch. The switch then connects to my router. All five of my computers are connected to the switch, actually. The only one that won't talk to any sites other than https secure sites is the Linux box. I am not well-versed in the inner workings of Linux and need some help in what I need to do so that regular http sites work. You guys always have the right anwers so I will wait humbly for your replies.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I bring down a certain machine with some nfs mounts using init 0, it hangs forever while trying to bring down the mounts, but if I bring it down using halt -p (which I've read just calls shutdown if I'm in init 3), it comes down in a timely manner. I've also read that shutdown still calls all the rc.d kill scripts just like init 0, so what is actually the difference between them? Is it this:
Quote:
All processes are first notified that the system is going down by the signal SIGTERM?Does init not do that? I'm not trying to directly troubleshoot why NFS makes me hang with init 0 at this point, just wondering why shutdown works whereas init 0 doesn't.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently got a cable modem from Comcast, and connected a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router to it, then connected my computer and an Xbox 360 to the router with ethernet cables.
My computer dual-boots Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In either operating system, the wireless connection is flawless. In Windows, so is the wired connection. But in Ubuntu, there's a lot of trouble with the wired connection -- specifically, while I can connect to the router and to the Internet, and while I can use ping, dig, traceroute, etc., to verify connections to remote hosts, Web browsing, or anything else that uses http, works only for a few Websites, and then only erratically.
I don't believe it is a DNS problem -- testing with ping, dig, etc., demonstrates that, and I have also tried using alternate nameservers. I also don't believe that it is an issue with IPv6, as I've tried the fixes usually suggested, including editing the grub configuration to disable IPv6 support in the kernel and verifying that IPv6 was inactive. I've also tried using local dns servers such as pdns-recursor. None of these things seemed to help.
Also, perhaps unrelated, but disturbing: my computer has locked up a few times while testing the wired connection, and I had to use a hard reset to restart the computer.
I am having an issue with my server I have setup. I have apache running and can access the files via all other computers on my network via the ip address i have it set to default to the /var/www folder with index.html as the main file. I am however having issues trying to access it from my other IP the one i found at what is my ip. I have even setup a no-ip address to it. I've forwarded port 20 and port 80 i've even given it the default dmz. I disabled the firewall on my router and I checked and my Ubuntu machine doesn't have a firewall whatsoever i can access my outside ip on the local machine and have access the problem i'm having is trying to access it from anywhere but home. View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed nVidia drivers for Ubuntu 11.04 but when I went to restart the computer (to complete the installation) it froze on the splash screen at the third "dot" and I had to turn off the computer manually.
I can shut down the computer, but every time I restart I get the same issue (except sometimes only the "dots" appear with lines of code running in the background).
I read on-line that hitting "F1" or "ALT + F1" right before the splash screen appears might work...but it doesn't.
My concern is that maybe the nVidia driver is "activated but not currently in use" because it didn't install properly due to the whole not restarting on it's own thing.
my internet connections works via my eth0 adapter. For Windows user this may be fine, but I actually would like to know what makes it connect. My /etc/network/interfaces shows:
[code]...
No eth0 mentioned here. dhcp3/dhclient.conf consists only of commented-out lines, so no eth0 here either. In /etc/init.d I see there is this networking daemon. When I do
[code]...
that magically enhanced eth0 works even if you want to shut it down. No wonder I don't get my wlan0 working, my PC doesn't seem to care about anything I am configuring here.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10..My sound works fine unless I have headphones plugged in. I've tried 2 sets of headphones, and it doesn't work with either set, so it's not the headphones. The volume is not muted (it's at 100%) for the headphones either in alsamixer. How can I diagnose and fix this?
