Fedora Hardware :: ATI Mobility X600 (RV380 Based) Doesn't Work After Preupgrade FC13 - FC14

Nov 3, 2010

I have with the Videocard of one of my laptops. This laptop has a Mobility Radeon X600 card (RV380 based). I always had 3D hardware acceleration with mesa (at least in Fedora 12 and 13), but now it doesn't work. Boot seems normal, but reviewing the logs, I see this in the Xorg.0.log (after loading the radeon modues):

I don't have hardware acceleration, so no compositing and no gnome-shell I tried with both 7.9.1 and 7.9.2 versions of mesa-dri-driver (and its libs). The xorg-x11-drv-ati version is 6.13.1-0.3.20100705git37b348059.fc14

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Doesn't Work In Asus X50GL Laptop

May 2, 2010

I have installed it in multiple machines (servers, desktops, laptops)I have even installed 10.04 beta in several laptops for educational purposes without a single crash. But 10.04 crashes in laptop ASUS X50GL with processor Intel Core 2 Duo T5800.In fresh installation, it hangs always, in ANY 10.04 version, beta or stable, 32 or 64 bit, also from iso image in CD or in usb stick,I have tried all possibilities! Therefore, clever enough, I though let's do it in an indirect way: let's install the 8.04 distro (it works) and later on I will upgrade to 10.04. So I just did.Everything was fine (also the upgrade, without a single warning) until final reboot after upgrade to 10.04.hanged at boot!. There is incompatibility between 10.04 and this firmware, clearly. Unfortunately, 10.04 is not yet stable, I guess.I took a picture of the screen which I attach.

Fedora Installation :: Get F12 Running On My Dell D600 Laptop?

Nov 21, 2009

i am trying to get F12 running on my Dell D600 laptop and am having some SERIOUS networking issues.

i had F11 running, but the upgrade process was FUBAR'd and doesn't work so i had to do a clean installation. upon finishing that, i now have no network connectivity.

i try connecting an ethernet cable to eth0 (LAN connection), no connection. i try connecting to my wireless network using wlan0, no connection

i turn off network manager, try adding them manually same thing.

how the frick do i get this thing to connect to the world?

Edit: p.s. the only connection that i've been able to get so far is some halfway connection to my wireless, but it puts me on the 10.x.x.x subnet, and my entire internal network is on 192.168.1.x.

Edit: one other thing, every time i make changes and reboot it tells me to log into system-config-network as root and make further changes

Fedora Installation :: Can't Install F15 On Brand New Dell XPS Laptop / Way To Do This?

Sep 8, 2011

I just got my brand new shiny Dell XPS L502X laptop today and planned to do a dual-boot installation between Win 7 and F15. Win 7 went great but I can't even get the 64-bit Live DVD of F15 to load. The splash screen always hangs while the bar loads, but if I push ESC so I can see what's going on in the background, I get a whole lot of different error messages and the last message is "fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed." What I get is nearly identical to what I found in this post. I've already tried the usual kernel options that have always worked for me in the past, such as noapic, noacpi, and nomodeset. However, the Live DVD still won't boot. There's got to be a way to install this. Any ideas?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Doesn't Work At All?

Mar 9, 2010

It's been almost two months since this problem started. I'm running 9.10, Karmic Koala, with all updates. I was hoping one of the updates would just fix this problem.

The microphone does not appear to work at all. It seems to exist because I have a choice for "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" under "sound preferences," but I don't know how else to check whether this is true. Sound Recorder does not record anything and Skype does not capture any sound from me.

how to run commands in the terminal and I consider myself an intermediate user, I just don't know anything about sound.

Ubuntu :: Microphone Doesn't Work - Can't Unmute ?

Nov 14, 2010

I have a microphone perfectly working on windows but I'm not able to use it on Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. I can't either record a sound or use skype.

I've installed Gnome-Alsa and unmuted every slider I could unmute on Alsa. But if I go on "Sound Preferences, Input, Choose a device for sound input" there's nothing I can choose. And the "input volume" is gray and so the "mute" check-box.

I thought that it was a driver problem so I went to Asus website to download Audio driver for my mother board (Asus Rampage II Gene). I got a package with Alsa drivers so I think they're already in Ubuntu.

What should I try?

I can't believe that a simple microphone doesn't work in Ubuntu 10.10 with a quite new Asus motherboard. It works in windows!

Hardware :: Microphone Control - Doesn't Work

Jan 14, 2010

I've been having problems in getting my microphone input to work. Frustratingly, it works sometimes and doesn't work at other times, and I have yet to discover what causes the difference. I've been testing it with the Skype Sound Test Service.

My laptop, like most others, has a built-in microphone as well as a microphone jack (which I'm using). In kmix, there are sliders for:

What do all of these do, and how do they relate to the two microphone sources? Can I use them to select input from one source while silencing the other? Where can I read about this?

I'm running Kubuntu Koala, so I asked this question over in the Kubuntu forum, but no one there has responded. That was probably not the best place to try (for this issue, at least).

Ubuntu :: 9.10 External Microphone Doesn't Work Anymore

Jan 14, 2010

Update 6th March 2010: Update to Kernel 2.6.31-20 SOLVED the problem. Recording works again (still wouldn't in kernels 2.6.31-17 to 2.6.31-19). If a kernel update doesn't solve your problem, please read post 14 on page 2 by Mocha which seems to have solved the problem for other users without updating the kernel

Update 8th February 2010 to Kernel 2.6.31-19 did not solve the problem, please also read post number 7 for more details.

Quick Conclusion for other users who might experience the same problem:

After an update to kernel version 2.6.31-17 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, my external microphone did not work anymore. Playback was possible, just recording would not work anymore, although there was quite some background noise in the headphones. This made it impossible for me to use Skype and/or Sound Recorder.

All the possible solutions offered below did not help in my case (although you might give them a try).

I switched back to kernel version 2.6.31-16 where the problem does not occur.

Output: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Realtek ALC662 rev1

I know there are lots of threads about this topic, but I have spent hours on this problem already and none of the solutions offered so far worked for me so I decided to start this thread.

I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 and so far, my external microphone worked flawlessly in Skype as well as in Sound Recorder. A few days ago, I received a call on Skype and all the guy on the other side could hear was loud noise. I can only play sound, but not record anymore (i.e. the microphone doesn't work anymore). I tried two different microphones just to be sure whether one was defective and also checked it in Windows (where they both work).

I am not sure what might have caused this problem, I just remember a kernel upgrade about that time (not sure whether this is the reason though). I use 2.6.31-17-generic now.

Here is what I have tried so far:

1) Right-click on the Sound Icon in the top right corner and checked the following: in the hardware tab, it is set to analog stereo duplex, input is set to internal audio analog stereo (no other choice here) and the mic is NOT muted (playing with the volume doesn't help either) and output is set to internal audio analog stereo (again, no other choice) and connector is set to analog output (here I can switch to analog headphones or analog speaker, but makes no difference).

I remember that I could choose between Microphone 1 and Microphone 2 in the input tab; this is somehow magically gone.

2) Installed padevchooser, tried several settings to no avail

3) When I use "alsamixer" (version 1.0.20) in a terminal, Playback>Master is set to 100<>100, Capture is set to 150<>150, lowering and/or playing with these figures doesn't help either.

When I use "alsamixer -Dhw:0" in a terminal, I get the same results as in step four.

4) In Gnome Alsa Mixer, only "Beep" is muted, everything else is set to max. I have Master, Headphon, PCM, Front, Front Mi (x2), Lin, Mic, Mic Boost, Capture (x2, set to record), Beep, Speaker

I have tried to mute/unmute different setting to no avail. Now I wonder why I have two Front Mi and two Capture entries. This is different than it used to be, might this be causing the problem?

5) Fiddling with Pulse Audio Volume Control didn't help either.

6) Had a look at "paman" (pulse audio manager), not sure whether I should change anything here.

7) Installed "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic" and rebooted as recommended in several threads, did not help either.

Added the parameters "model=auto" and "probe_mask=1" to '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf', did not work, so I deleted the entries again (hint from [url], see post 5)

Now I am at my wits end. I need my microphone to work, especially for Skype, otherwise I have to switch to Windows every time I receive or want to make a call which is definitely not a long-term solution?

Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this problem? As I said, it used to work flawlessly just a few days ago and now I don't even know what I should do next to make it work again...

Output of "amixer"

When I run "alsactl init" I get the following result which might be at least a part of the problem, but I wouldn't know how to solve this problem:

Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC662 rev1" "HDA:10ec0662,103c303a,00100101" "0x103c" "0x303a"
Hardware is initialized using a guess method

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Doesn't Work At All For Any Application

Jul 14, 2010

I have a hda-intel soundcard which is working perfectly with alsa on Kubuntu 10.4. The only problem is the microphone.

Apparently I am not able to make it capture any sound or the sound is horrible:

- it works only in QArecord after I check the "Capture" checkbox.

-it doesn't work at all for Flash even if I Allow Flsh to use my mic

-it doesn't work at all for vmware player (I have a winxp guest os)

-in Skype for Linux it works only if I set Microphone boost to 100%, but the sound is too weak and distorted.

In alsa mixer I have enabled all 3 Capture sliders to 100%, the Mic is at 100%, Input sources are all 3 set up as Mic.

The microphone doesn't work at all for any application if I use FrontMic instead of Mic.

Being able to use the microphone in Skype and VMware player is very important to me and it's the only thing keeping me from using linux as my main OS.

Note: I have tried Slackware and I have the same issues there too.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Suddenly Doesn't Work In Skype

Sep 15, 2010

My audio and video used to work great in skype. Two days ago connected my laptop and TV, in order to use the TV as a second monitor, to watch a football match (I only have IPTV). Only thing I had to do was to go to System -> Preferences -> Sound and switch (in the hardware tab) my Internal Audio Hardware from Analog Stereo Duplex to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input.

So after the match I switched it back to Analog Stereo Duplex and proceeded to skype with my girlfriend. Problem was, the mic stopped working. It works just fine in 'Input' tab of my sound preferences, as well as in sound recorder. She, in skype, heard nothing but static. Test call doesn't work either. Now I've done all the usual stuff, Skype isn't allowed to automatically adjust mixer levels and my mic is already boosted. I've reinstalled skype and everything. I'm running out of ideas.
