Ubuntu Servers :: Local IP Works External IP Doesn't
Feb 9, 2010
I am having an issue with my server I have setup. I have apache running and can access the files via all other computers on my network via the ip address i have it set to default to the /var/www folder with index.html as the main file. I am however having issues trying to access it from my other IP the one i found at what is my ip. I have even setup a no-ip address to it. I've forwarded port 20 and port 80 i've even given it the default dmz. I disabled the firewall on my router and I checked and my Ubuntu machine doesn't have a firewall whatsoever i can access my outside ip on the local machine and have access the problem i'm having is trying to access it from anywhere but home. I'm running Telnet Server, VFTP, and VNC on a Fedora 14 box. The box's internal IP is 192.168.1.222 This machine is configured to live in the DMZ, The firewall is up on both the router and this box. I can remote in from home using our external IP. I can FTP. I can Telnet. All using our external IP. When i'm in the office, i can remote in using our external IP. I can FTP. I can Telnet. Again, all with the external IP. If i attempt to telnet 192.168.1.222 i get a connection refused. i can ping the 192.168 address
nmap tells me that all 1000 ports on 192.168.1.222 are closed
nmap tells me that my expected ports are open on the external IP.
.... This is a relatively new conundrum as it "used to work", and only appears not to since our last reboot (power outage). I know i have to be missing something simple here, but i differ to the experts.

I have a script which runs a few other scripts (in subfolders of the first script) in order to mount some unix/linux shares) Anyway, when I run the file from rc.local and try to pipe the output into a file the file is empty and the shares are not mounted. however when I run the file it mounts everything.... Also, the script doesn't work on my wireless clients...

I recently moved from Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server. I have a Dell D600 acting as a three prong firewall. I use a Netgear FA120 USB NIC for the third prong. After converting to Server, the NIC detects as Eth1. I'm able to configure an IP, but the NIC never sends or receives packets. The same NIC works great in Ubuntu Desktop. Dmesg never shows the NIC being ready.

Sometimes when internet goes down and any mail send then it bounced back immediately saying domain not found. Can u please tell me how i configure to hold all mails in postfix server rather than bounce when internet fails and will pass through when restored the internet around 15-30 minutes?

I'm trying to use xmms (or any other audio player) lauched from a remote computer but playing locally. I have a maverick server which has xmms installed. I launch an xdmcp (starnetssh) from a windows machine and I am able to open terminals, panels, emacs, etc but when I open xmms (or MOC, is the other one I tested), it simply doesn't play anything unless the same user is logged on the ubuntu box.

I have this unique situation, I think. My TV plays certain files only through external USB storage. My Ubuntu server stores all of these files on local hard disks. I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

I've installed Debian inside Virtualbox on Mac OS 10.5.
I want to set up networking so I can (a) reach the outside internet from inside Debian (Virtualbox), and (b) reach the virtual Debian from my Mac. (I don't need to be able to reach the virtual Debian from anywhere but the Mac.)
I can't seem to figure it out. If I set the Virtualbox networking to "NAT", I can reach the outside world from Debian, but I can't reach Debian from Mac OS. If I set the Virtualbox to "Host Link Adapter", I can reach Debian from Mac OS, but I can't reach the internet from Debian.
I'm sure I've set up the way I want before, and I don't remember doing anything special for that, so I must be missing something simple today.

I've got router with: eth2 - local network (192.168.1.1), ppp0 - uplink (x.y.z.a)
my firewall:
Code:
# Generated by iptables-save v1.4.5 on Mon Jan 11 12:22:25 2010
*raw
:PREROUTING ACCEPT [1038480:666298388]
[code]....
somehow iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth2 -d x.y.z.a -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.1 helps, but imho there should be some other solution. kernel is 2.6.31.6, architecture is x86_64.
P.S. i've also tried iptables -A POSTROUTING ! -d x.y.z.a -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQUERADE that didn't help either.

I couldn't find an answer to this question (not including vpn) on different threads so decided to eventually post it, though it's probably easy one. I would like to connect to some application on known IP and port in the internet from my LAN computer. However to do so (I have some application, not any administrative constraints or not being allowed to) I would like to use local addresses. So, let's say - I want to connect to the external host VV.XX.YY.ZZ, port AA using 192.168.EE.FF port BB. Baically so far I have limitation in my application (too many places for possible error, to correct it right now - will change it in future). Is it possible that after my application sends request to 192.168.1.EE port BB, my Linux transparently translates it to VV.XX.YY.ZZ:AA? I tried iptables tutorials and some forums, but nothing seems to be addressing this issue. I don't know if it's event possible with iptables but am pretty sure this should be possible.

I'm running a "relatively standard" home network environment. That is, I've got a DSL connection to my ISP, and am running a router/NAT environment that connects a number of machines -- Mac, Windows, and Linux -- to the external network. Internally, all the machines have addresses in the range of 192.168.0.x. However, because of the static/NAT address mapping, the machines whose internal addresses are mapped to external static addresses show up at external hosts as 216.xxx.yyy.zzz (the address range assigned to me by my ISP).
The other machines, which are on the network via NAT, show up as 66.xxx.yyy.zzz, the address assigned by my ISP. Finally, I'm running a local DNS server that handles addressing issues for my domains and sub-domains that are hosted on local machines. All the machines use this local server for their DNS, with my ISP's DNS server as secondary. All of this is to say that it's more or less a pretty typical configuration, and, in general, everything is working fine.
Here's where it gets tricky:
* Machine A is a Fedora 10 linux box, which hosts an externally visible domain and runs, among other things, a web server. It's assigned to one of the addresses that's mapped to a static IP address.
* Machine B is a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (10.6). It typically runs at 192.168.0.6, which is NOT one of the addresses mapped to a static address, but "just" a NAT address.
Now, suppose Machine B hits the web browser run by Machine A: the log files should show the traffic arriving from the local address, 192.168.0.6. However, it instead shows up as coming from 66.xxx.yyy.zzz, the external NAT-affiliated address. This seems wrong, especially since all the other machines on my network show 192.168-type addresses when hitting the web server.
I now change Machine B's address to 192.168.0.5 -- one of the statically-mapped addresses. Browsing traffic is now arriving from 192.168.0.5, which is (I think) as it should be. I now change Machine B's address back to 192.168.0.6. The web traffic on Machine B is now reported to be arriving from 192.168.0.6 -- NOT 66.xxx.yyy.zzz. It's complicated by the fact that I don't know where to look for the problem. All the log files on all the machines seem relatively normal; there are least no glaring problems screaming out from them.

So I've got a weird issue with my usb external drive. It's a generic enclosure in to which I've mounted a toshiba IDE drive. It appears as "Generic USB to IDE bridge".Said drive works fine on every machine I try to use it on, but NOT my laptop. Oh, it will appear in LSUSB, and in dmesg, (sometimes it appears, but the partitions do not, e.g. I see sdc, but not sdc1 and sdc2).
However, on any attempt to access it (it mounts fine too), Dolphin hangs (and so does most of KDE). I assume a disk sleep is the problem. Unplugging the drive resolves the hang. ages later, the drive will copy bits of data in small spurts, until it hangs for some more time. After a while, I see an ACHI/USB reset message in the system logs, and the drive resumes copying for some more time.
The drive is bus powered, but it doesn't matter if I use one/both USB connectors, and like I said, it works fine on my desktop, which also has SuSE 11.4 on it. Any ideas what's going on? Sorry if I left out some info, I wanted to get this out and let you folks stew over it while I'm running some errands.

Each time I'm moving my new files and directories from my local slackware PC to my NAS (Linux based) in the LAN.
This NAS is 24/7 online and I can access it from the net.More than that it's backed up every day.
I was thinking of making my home directory directly in this NAS.
I didn't made a separate partition for my Home during the installation of slackware in the PC.

I recently picked up an external HD which I partitioned, formatted and can mount just fine under Debian. When I plug in the device, I can see an appropriate sda1 entry for my partition in /dev. However, when I attempt to use the device in Gentoo (the system I bought the drive to back up) it seems to not be recognized. I still get some new entries under /dev when I plug it in, but no specific partition number is recognized. On Debian (where it works) here is the output of dmesg after plugging in the device:
Code:
[ 9179.847274] usb-storage: device found at 8
[ 9179.847277] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
[ 9179.848514] usb 5-5: New USB device found, idVendor=059b, idProduct=0070
[ 9179.848520] usb 5-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 9179.848523] usb 5-5: Product: eGo USB
[ 9179.848526] usb 5-5: Manufacturer: Iomega
[ 9179.848528] usb 5-5: SerialNumber: 090000000000D517
[ 9184.844890] usb-storage: device scan complete .....
I have to admit that I'm kind of baffled by what is going on here. It would seem that in Debian the drive is initially treated as a cdrom device and then my partition is seen, but the same is not occurring in Gentoo. How I can make the sr0 device work in Gentoo? Am I missing a module?

8.04 on a Lippert PC104, no xwindows. This is a little computer intended to just run one program headless in an instrument i am developing. I would like to run this one program from boot. The obvious answer is to add the program to rc.local followed by an &. This doesn't work.I have tried adding all sorts of things to rc.local including mkdir, touch, echo etc etc. the only utility that works is 'touch' which tells me that rc.local is getting executed.I tried creating a new service called local and putting that in rc2.d as priority 80 using rc-update.d. again, only touch worked. so i tried adding sleep 10 and running the utilities as daemons and still they won't run (except touch /var/lock/local).

I recently got a cable modem from Comcast, and connected a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router to it, then connected my computer and an Xbox 360 to the router with ethernet cables.
My computer dual-boots Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In either operating system, the wireless connection is flawless. In Windows, so is the wired connection. But in Ubuntu, there's a lot of trouble with the wired connection -- specifically, while I can connect to the router and to the Internet, and while I can use ping, dig, traceroute, etc., to verify connections to remote hosts, Web browsing, or anything else that uses http, works only for a few Websites, and then only erratically.
I don't believe it is a DNS problem -- testing with ping, dig, etc., demonstrates that, and I have also tried using alternate nameservers. I also don't believe that it is an issue with IPv6, as I've tried the fixes usually suggested, including editing the grub configuration to disable IPv6 support in the kernel and verifying that IPv6 was inactive. I've also tried using local dns servers such as pdns-recursor. None of these things seemed to help.
Also, perhaps unrelated, but disturbing: my computer has locked up a few times while testing the wired connection, and I had to use a hard reset to restart the computer.

I've got 9.04 and 9.10 both installed on the same machine. The /home directory is on a separate partition, so both OSes use the same /home.I can't get Compiz to work at all in 9.10, even though it's been perfectly fine in 9.04. Is there a backport of some sort that i should install? The fixes I've found all point to editing the xorg.conf file, but of course, Karmic doesn't have an xorg.conf file.I've tried reinstalling the Compiz files, reinstalled the open-source video drivers, installed/uninstalled fglrx drivers a few times, rebooted dozens of times.

I installed nVidia drivers for Ubuntu 11.04 but when I went to restart the computer (to complete the installation) it froze on the splash screen at the third "dot" and I had to turn off the computer manually.
I can shut down the computer, but every time I restart I get the same issue (except sometimes only the "dots" appear with lines of code running in the background).
I read on-line that hitting "F1" or "ALT + F1" right before the splash screen appears might work...but it doesn't.
My concern is that maybe the nVidia driver is "activated but not currently in use" because it didn't install properly due to the whole not restarting on it's own thing.

my internet connections works via my eth0 adapter. For Windows user this may be fine, but I actually would like to know what makes it connect. My /etc/network/interfaces shows:
[code]...
No eth0 mentioned here. dhcp3/dhclient.conf consists only of commented-out lines, so no eth0 here either. In /etc/init.d I see there is this networking daemon. When I do
[code]...
that magically enhanced eth0 works even if you want to shut it down. No wonder I don't get my wlan0 working, my PC doesn't seem to care about anything I am configuring here.

I've recently installed KDE 4.4.1 just to try on a Dell 1545 laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 previously installed.
My problem is that the wireless connection works just perfectly with nm-applet under Gnome, but when I login on KDE and ask KNetworkManager to connect to the same network as before, it can't finish the connection.
When I choose the connection the program asks for my passphrase, I type it and then it just sticks on "activating network" and nothing happens.
My experience with KDE is zero, so I don't even know where to start looking. I'd even tried to kill KNetworkManager and try to replace it with nm-applet, but I think there's a daemon that restarts it immediately.

Ive been having some troubles with wireless. Ethernet works but wirless (at first) doesn't work. However, when i plug the ethernet in, all the wireless networks it detects are populated and i can then connect until i shutdown my computer. My disable internet button on my computer also doesn't seem to work well. It is always blue, and when i press it and have internet connection estabsliehd, it erratically turns from blue to orange to blue and then stays on blue.
When i have shutdown and booted up and i haven't placed ethernet in (so wireless doesn't work) it wont even change color.Any solutions? I dont know what info to include so just let me know and when the wireless does it work, it is slow in opening a new tab and connecting to google.
