Ubuntu :: Dell Inspiron 1545 - Works Fine On Wired But Fails On Wireless - Error - Connection Failed: Bad Password

Aug 5, 2011

I have Dell Inspiron 1545. It works fine on wired but fails on wireless.

I am using wicd as an interface.

It always comes up with the following error: Connection Failed: Bad password.

I have checked the passwords in both wicd and the router.

They seem to be the same. Am I missing something ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Neither Wired Nor Wireless Working Dell Inspiron 1545

Jul 27, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I can't connected to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection. I have a BT Home Hub 2 wireless router. I can connect to the Internet when running Windows Vista, but not with Ubuntu.

I tried installing the Broadcom STA driver off of the live disk, which initially seemed to work. However, I still couldn't connect to the Internet and when I clicked on System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, there weren't any proprietary drivers to install or that had been installed. Also, when I reboot, Ubuntu tries to connect to my network automatically but always fails. That's what makes me think that a driver has been installed, but just isn't the right one or isn't working.

Ubuntu Networking :: Re-enable Wireless On Dell Inspiron 1545?

Jun 12, 2010

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with wireless card Dell wireless 1397 802.11g. It was working fine with Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 (I've got the two OS installed alongside). But as soon as I upgraded my Ubuntu to version 10.4 I realised it lost its wireless connection! I updated the system, the hardware driver for Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated and in use (according to Ubuntu Hardware drivers checker) but the fact is that I can only connect on the Internet if I hook the net cable on it, when I run the mouse over internet connection icon at the topright side of the monitor I see "no network" message and when I left click on it the option "wireless network" it's disabled and gray. How can I get my wireless card back working?

Networking :: Dell Inspiron 1545 Ethernet And Wireless Won't Connect On Ubuntu Studio

Sep 14, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.

I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?

I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess

The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.

Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).

Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.

Ubuntu :: No Wired Connection On Dell Inspiron 570 Desktop / Fix It?

May 1, 2010

I just bought a basic Dell Inspiron 570 Desktop, and installed Ubuntu 9.10, and found that the wired internet won't connect. I've checked the wire, and confirmed that an Ubuntu laptop can get a wired connection using it, but the new Inspiron doesn't do anything.

The "Network Connections" dialog shows a "Wired connection 1" item, but Network Manager refuses to connect to it. ifconfig only shows the lo interface.

How can I get this wired interface working? Please, this is very frustrating. I can only assume it's some sort of driver issue (which seems rare with the wired connection), but I can't even run an update since I don't have an internet connection.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Establish Wired Connection - Dell Inspiron

Aug 22, 2010

I have an issue relating my broadband connection, which I am not able to solve. I hope and wish, that I would find some way out here.

Some introduction: I am using Dell Inspiron (i3 processor) laptop, which I recently bought. I have win 7 preinstalled in it. In win 7, the wired broadban connection (Airtel connection) is working fine and have no issues.

I have been using mobile GPRS(BSNL, Ltd) through bluetooth, and that have been working fine. But today when I tried to connect through landline connection, it didn't workout. But the bluetooth connection is still fine. When I tried to do the connection manually through Network Manager, it is not taking the MAC Address. Till now, after installation, I have not updated my OS.

I surfed the net and tried some commands, whose results I am posting below.

From a post I found out, that I should change my duplex settings (from 100 full to 10 full), but I could not get much. The corresponding commands and output,

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell 1545 - Wireless Connection Drops After A Couple Of Minutes?

Apr 10, 2010

I have a Dell 1545 laptop with ubuntu 9.1 32-bit installed (the 64-bit had a bug with the wireless drivers which is why I have not used it). Initially, the laptop worked well with the wireless (a sky router with WPA security) but now, the wireless signal drops after a couple of minutes of usage. I have to reboot the laptop or sometimes reboot the router as well to regain the wireless signal. I am using the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver.

I have an older dell inspiron 6400 as well with the same OS and driver and it works perfectly without any problems for hours / days.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Install 12 On Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop?

May 12, 2010

I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.

The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.

Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.

Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva. Which one could be a best possible for my installation.

As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install.

Ubuntu Networking :: Port Not Opening On Wired Connection, Fine On Wireless?

May 30, 2011

I'm fairly sure that this is an Ubuntu issue, as I've tried this on my windows computer with success.I'm running a minecraft server on my laptop, previously over a wireless connection but the data rates were too slow. On a wired connection, however, the server starts up and runs like normal but the port is not open when accessing from the network's public IP. I tested this with canyouseeme(.)org. I can get to it from other computers within the network by using a local IP, which to me seems a little strange as it seems to indicate that the port is open on the PC but somewhere in the router it gets confused due to being wired(?). Obviously I've forwarded the ports on the router (BTHomehub 2.0) with both TCP and UCP (it worked over wireless!). Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I'm stumped.

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Vostro 1500 for awhile, one morning I tried to get online & no networks would show up. I tried plugging in my ethernet cable & still nothing. Just the two lights by the plug stay lit up. If I boot into Puppy Linux the wireless works just fine. I was using the B43 driver before I had problems, then when I was trying to get it to work I accidentally deleted the driver. I cannot figure out how to get my internet working again in Ubuntu. I don't want to be stuck using Puppy Linux forever! I don't really know many commands, normally just search online how to fix problems, but it's pretty hard to do when I have to boot back & forth between operating systems to find things to try.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Driver Install Error On Liveusb For Dell Inspiron Mini 9

Oct 5, 2010

I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]

I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.

I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

Wireless Networks
Device not ready

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.

It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."

While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,

Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.

Then another dialog that says

SystemError: installArchives() failed.

What the heck is happening here?

Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.

tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4. Failed To Run On Dell Inspiron 1520

May 2, 2011

I'm using OpenSUSE since vesrion 10.x and I never have problems to install latest version of OpenSUSE. Last week end I decided to upgrade my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520) from version 11.3 to version 11.4. I performed clean install (I have separate home partition so I have no problems with my info) but when setup goes to last step "Prepare first time automatic configuration" (top progress bar shows 3% and bottom progress bar shows 10%) my laptop hangs and Capslock Led and the led next to it start blinking together. I tried 3 times and every time the same thing happened. After that I installed 11.3 again (without problems) and then I tried to run upgrade to 11.4 from 11.4 DVD. Upgrade finished successfully but when openSUSE tries to start my laptop hangs in the same way as before . So I decided to go back to 11.3 and I did it without problems even I've upgraded KDE to 4.6 successfully.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Second Screen Fails In 11.4 (but Works Just Fine In Ubuntu)

Apr 11, 2011

System:Tri-head, dual-card: GeForce 9500 GT, GeForce 8400 GS
Dual-boot: openSUSE 11.4, Ubuntu Natty
Driver: nvidia proprietary (260.19.44 in openSUSE, 270.30 in Ubuntu due to kernel version)
xorg.conf: same for both
Results: All three heads work just fine in Natty; secondary screen fails in openSUSE:

Code:
[25.164] (EE) NVIDIA(1): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:2:0:0. Please
[25.164] (EE) NVIDIA(1): check your system's kernel log for additional error

But nothing is jumping out at me in the output of dmesg. I also don't see any additional system or kernel logs in /var/log. I'll google some more on that front. One other fun fact: nvidia-settings fails to run in openSUSE. Unless I launch it under gdb. Then it starts up and runs as expected. (And the second screen ain't there, as expected.) Here's (what I think are) the relevant items:

dmesg - Pastebin.com
xorg.conf - Pastebin.com
