Fedora :: Network Adapter Realkek 8168 Is Totally Disabled In F14 64bit
Nov 3, 2010
Just upgraded from F13 32bit to F14 64bit. The Realtek ethernet controller on my motherboard is now totally disabled. The module r8169 is loaded, but the light on the port is not lit. When I insert the cable the light quickly goes on, then off again.
Needless to say that ping to LAN says destination unreachable.

I have been running FC8 on this IBM T23 with a D-Link wireless adapter. Using MadWifi this has worked fine with Network Manager disabled. But now I have nuked that installation and replaced it with FC10. Network Manager is nice, and I would like to use it. And it kind-of works. Network Manager recognizes my router and all my neighbor's routers, but I can't connect.

Installing Fedora13 Kernel 2.6.33 killed my RealTek NIC. I found the following page which helped a little bit: [URL]. Unfortunately the card still does not work.
If I do
lsmod | grep r81
I get:
r8168 91833 0
So I am not sure the really the new module is loaded. Doesn't anybody have the realtek working with fedora13 ?

I have just updated to karmic and whenever i reboot i have to re-enable (turn on) my bluetooth adapter in order for it to work. In Fedora 12 Network Configuration tool the Activate and Deactivate buttons are disabled.I thought that this was due to Network Manager overriding it but I've disabled that in order to set a static ip but the buttons are still disabled.

The Fedora 13 Visualization guide mentions the ability to use "shared physical device" to give virtual guest full access to a network device. Where can I find more info on setting this up. When installing my first guest, the drop down menu didn't supply this as an option. Eth0 and Eth1 were not selectable (e.g. grayed out).Is there a better section to ask KVM related question? If so, I'll move there.
I'm setting up my first KVM guest now, played aroudn with VMware briefly. I did spend a lot of time wtih VM on mainframes (yes, I'm old)... and from my research, KVM is "catching up" with what we could do in the old days.

I had installed Fedora 12. I am using 4 LAN Cards. All these cards were configured using network manager, but i am not able to acivate /deactivate these cards using acivate /deactivate buttons since they got disabled. I could activate the cards by running /etc/init.d/restart network. Anyone knows why the acivate /deactivate buttons in network manager are disabled .

I have just installed FC12 on my machine - and gone Windows free for the first time ever. Now I do use various flavours of Linux on a daily basis but not from an installation/sys admin point of view so my questions here may seem a little basic but pleas eindulge me if you will!
Now, my network connection works perfectly well under the following scenarios.
1) FC12, wired to router
2) FC12, wireless, SSID broadcast enabled
3) Ubuntu (laptop), wireless, SSID broadcast DISABLED
The only scenario that does not work is FC12, wireless with SSID broadcast disabled.
I can only assume that it is an issue with my USB modem (a linksys WUSB54GS) since the same set-up works fine from my laptop running Ubuntu with an internal wireless card.
Now, I know from reading the forums that it's pretty easy to get around a disabled SSID broadcast but this is an itch I just have to scratch....what the hell is causing this problem?
nm-tool ouput is as follows:
I have tried using wpa_supplicant but I am not sure which driver I am using here - is it ndiswrapper per chance?
(Driver: rndis_wlan)
How I can connect once again to my wireless router with SSID broadcast turned off.

I'm working on setting up access for our developer via Telnet, we are on a local network behind a physical firewall. I set up the standard Telnet service for Fedora15 and from localhost I can login via any user and root.... However I cannot login from another terminal on the LAN, even though I can ping and FTP to the fedora15 box. I added the firewall rules for telnet, that did not work, so I disabled the firewall, still cannot get a connection via port 25. I feel either port 25 is closed in another manor or the telnet is restricted to the localhost.
Also I cannot login to root to configure the Firewall Desktop GUI, only standard users, is this an issue? I also cannot login to the console as root even though I use the correct password.I can only su to root and sometimes it is a PITA. There must be some settings to clear these issues up...

I am doing network config of my laptop. I'm new to Fedora, so I'm not sure how it goes ...
I have an Ethernet device (eth0) and a wireless device, wlan0
Status in system->administration->network:
Tab devices:
eth0 : active
wlan0: inactive
Tab Hardware:
eth0: system
wlan0: configured (description: b43)
Double clicking on the wlan0 line gets you to Network Adapters Configuration, where adapter b43 grayed out) is associated with device wlan0. So far, so good (I did all the fwcutter stuff, so I assume this is the result). When I installed the system (from installcd, then update, then install broadcom-wl, ...) I configured it to be started up with network manager, automatically on startup. I managed to get it working exactly once in that session.
Problem is, it doesn't start up and the wireless is not even visible when you click the network manager icon. For that matter, eth0 does not start automatically either, but at least there is a button to start it in network manager. Coming back to the tab devices, clicking on wlan0 allows you to click on the activate button ... but there it says: Cannot activate network device wlan0! b43 device wlan0 does not seem to be present.

I tried connect to internet through iPhone (bluetooth tether), so I followed one tutorial... It said I have to change "networkmanager" to "ifup" in yast>network settings, and make some other changes... I did it, but I couldn't connect via iphone... OK... I put back all changes, also changed ifpu to networkmanager.
After reboot, Knetowrkmanager gives me "network management disabled" on startup, instead of list of my networks.
Of course, I google for solution, but without any luck. And then, I don't know why, I killed Knetworkmanager, start it again, and.. it worked!
But now, I have to kill it, and start again always, when I reboot my laptop...(HP Compaq 6720s, BCM4312, KDE 4.3.4)

I found 2 options:
1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/555571
2. Network management disabled after start on 11.2 - openSUSE Forums
but I don't have the /var/lib/NetworkManager folder at all

Currently working on the targeted policy, I need a help in doing the following things as quick as possible:
1- How to create a totally new SELinux user (not mapping new linux user to SELinux user) I want a new user with no roles or with a maximum of 1 role. I also need how to compile the new user so I can used it for mapping users. At the time, I've tried creating a new file inside /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/users similar to the other users inside this directory, but it did not actually seem to appear when using the command semanage to list SELinux users : semanage user -l
2- How to create a totally new SELinux role (empty for now) ? and how to make the relation between this new role and domains or types.
3- How to create new domain, actually following some old instructions I created the .fc and .te files, but not the .if file, which is more complicated than the other 2 file.
