And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI started my laptop this morning with no problems. It was doing a file system check which I quit (pressing C) after about 30%. The only problem I had was wired networking didn't seem to be working (though wireless was). No problem: this happens sometimes and a restart fixes it. After restart: the GRUB screen hangs at "Loading stage 1.5" for ages before issuing Error 25. Try a restart. Same thing. And again. I'm on Lucid 10.4, no other OS installed, Toshiba laptop that up to now has had no problems with the last two versions of Ubuntu.

The same system runs fine with windows XP The same system runs fine when I use onboard graphic card and disable nvidia. I installed the fedora 14 by disabling nvidia graphic card and used onboard grphic card. I had exactly the same problem with ubuntu, I was not even able to boot from live cd with nvidia. When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

I am trying to install fedora on my semi aging PC. It installed fine and prompted me to reboot. So I did, but then as soon as it tries to load the grub menu, it gives me the following error: no such device: 2cb414b7-7620-48a9-93af-f03aec3495e4How do I restore grub and make it work? Right now I am using the livecd to type this. I do not really need the grub loader since I am only running one OS, which is currently fedora. I recently had Ubuntu 10.04 which did not have grub (at least it is not shown during the boot) and suited me more than fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is running Fedora 12. I installed BackTrack 4 onto an external USB hard drive using a LiveCD. Now when I boot my laptop. I get this: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, wait Error 21. I never touched anything with my internal drive. When I was reviewing what partitions the installer was going to format, the swap partition for my internal drive (Fedora) was set to be formatted even though I did not specify this. Fedora never used to show GRUB loading at all. Screen was blank until Fedora starting loading. Maybe this means that this is a copy of GRUB from my BackTrack disc? I ran 'fdisk' to look for anything suspicious and under /dev/sda1 (internal drive, boot partition) it says "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary."

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've attempted to upgrade my FC9 machine to the latest Fedora 12. I downloaded the iso image onto DVD and booted from the DVD into the installer GUI. Everything proceeded flawlessly until I tried to reboot from the new installation on the hard drive.When rebooting, the word GRUB appears and the system hangs. I've rebooted in rescue mode and the grub.conf appears to make sense, although I can't say that I understand all the entries. Based on some research, I suspect that the problem is ocurring even before grub.conf get read.
Can someone give me a tip on where to begin? I don't expect a detailed answer, but I don't even know where to get started. As far as I know, I have no unusual hardware configurations. No RAID, no booting from USB. The system is old (bought around 2002), but has plenty of memory and storage. One possible clue: my USB keyboard would not work during the installation phase, and I had to replace it with one that plugged into the PS/2 port. USB mouse seems to be fine.
I upgraded to fc13 from fc12 recently. After the upgrade the virtual machine boot is stuck in grub loading stage 2. I have attached a screen shot of the picture for reference.

my lilo fedora entry boots fine but... at the middle of "after boot" loading the system hangs and stops the usual driver detection, etc (normally, it hangs on the CDROM detection or USB 2.0 camera detection).
I installed fedora 12 to a 4GB flash usb flash drive. When I reboot and select windowsxp, grub displays a blank screen and hangs up.

I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

I've used Windows 7 to repartition and have 80GB available for the Ubuntu install but when I put the CD in to run it gets detected as a bootable CD and starts to boot but freezes after Loading...I've left it for 2 hrs and it never progressed past that screen. I've also downloaded and burnt the ISO three times (twice in the 64 bit version and once in the 32). In all cases the install never advances. I've also tried a USB install but couldn't get that to boot

I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
I got a new ASUS EeePC 1015PEM with Windows 7 with the intention to install OpenSuse 11.3 onto it for having a dual booting netbook with enough disk space.I'm installing from an external DVD drive, the checksums of the ISO were ok as well.However, the OpenSuse installer fails at starting up after selecting the action. It hangs, no matter what menu entry I chose, at "loading basic drivers", forever.Because this isn't necessarily an unknown problem I've tried some of the predefined kernel options of the main installer menu. Then I tried some manually entered kernel boot options that helped me in some other installations:
acpi=off, apm=off, CPUFreq=noNone of them seem to have an effect on the installers behaviorI hope that there is people who managed to solve this problem with an actual EeePC model... because I really don't know what I could any more. It's kind of frustrating to not even get past the kernel launch I haven't tried any other distros installation discs, but I don't even intend to. I want OpenSuse because I'm running it on our firms machines as well and don't like shifting between systems.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu Jaunty server with 4 x 1 TB Hitachi SATA Hard drives and a 4GB IDE Flash Drive. I installed the root file system to the IDE Flash Drive and setup the 4 x 1 TB Hard Drives as a RAID 5 for the home partition (I actually allotted 3 Gigs on each drive as swap space as well). My problem occurs however when I restart my computer after the server installation. Grub doesn't load fully and I am left with a "GRUB_" message on the screen.My root partition is ext3 and I have also tried the same configuration with a boot partition as well on the IDE drive to no avail.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install openSUSE 11.2 on Dell XPS Studio, model PP35L, but loading kernel hangs at 94%, I tried F5 for Safe Settings, No APIC, No Local ACPI, Check Installation Media, but it still hangs at 94%. Installation works fine on older computer. Is it because openSuse kernel doesn't recognize the i5 Core processor yet? If this is caused by a driver, is there a way to display the kernel messages and what would be the kernel boot options to disable loading of that driver?

When they didn't work, I madly attempted to uninstall, reinstall, different drivers and configuration files following advice posted on forums. There were many, many installs and restarts during this process, causing a variety of problems and errors. Currently, I have purged all the nvidia drivers except the nvidia-current ones with the xorg.conf file generated by running nvidia-xconfig.
Current problems: Boot process gets to purple Ubuntu screen with 5 changing dots beneath, but hangs there forever. Pressing esc reveals that the boot process gets to "checking battery state [ok]", but fails to load the login screen. Pressing ctrl-alt F1 allows me to log-in and startx successfully starts Xorg with the proper Nvidia drivers.Question:How can I fix things so that the system does not hang at the Ubuntu loading screen? Or, how can I diagnose what is causing the error?I suspect there may be a problem with the xorg.conf file that's being generated by nvidia-xconfig. Please take a look:
