I have a rig with 4 graphics cards. When I installed Ubuntu, only 3 of them got detected, the 4th did not.Now, I've fixed that problem. View 4 RepliesI have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:

I burned and checked the image, but cannot install or upgrade ( I DL both the full and alternate image) Hangs on the Ubuntu screen with the scrolling dots. After this, I tried mounting and running the install from the iso, but since all the files are either .inf or unknown, I don't know how. Next, I tried a trick from the ubuntu site using alt+F2 to run from the iso, and it seemed to work, but now it still tries to DL the updates from the internet instead of just getting them from the ISO. This also happens now if I try to upgrade from the update manager, it keeps asking for the install disk. Is there any way to just use the ISO as though it were a disk? I have been running 9.10 for months with no problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty old acer lap top. I used to run xubuntu on it, then I formatted it and installed freeBSD just to check them out. I tried to install last version of xubuntu then, and I got a message that /dev/../loop0 couldn' d mount or sth then I learned about lubuntu and I tried to installed them but I tried both a dvd and a cd and on both cases after I select language and "install on this machine" I just see a screen with 4 red dots writing "Ubuntu 10.10" that stays like this forever.. and nothing happens. the same if I select to boot from the cd just to check the environment. I then tried a ubuntu-studio dvd I had handy just to see if this would work - and it started installing as expecting, I cancelled it after a while. how to get lubuntu running?

Also i have downloaded 9.10 64bit ISO, (making sure the md5 was correct)This is what ive tried: - Installing inside windows, cd - Installing inside windows, iso mounted - Installing via cd on boot - Installing via usb on boot- Booting from cd/usb, like testing, and install from that (but got to loading screen..)Ive tried the above with all the Ubuntu's mentioned.Yet all have got to the Loading screens and just stopped.With the USB one, once (it had casper on it?), it had errors such as IO, memory buffers etcSo why doesnt either 32 or 64 bit work on my system, is there something i missed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI started my laptop this morning with no problems. It was doing a file system check which I quit (pressing C) after about 30%. The only problem I had was wired networking didn't seem to be working (though wireless was). No problem: this happens sometimes and a restart fixes it. After restart: the GRUB screen hangs at "Loading stage 1.5" for ages before issuing Error 25. Try a restart. Same thing. And again. I'm on Lucid 10.4, no other OS installed, Toshiba laptop that up to now has had no problems with the last two versions of Ubuntu.

When they didn't work, I madly attempted to uninstall, reinstall, different drivers and configuration files following advice posted on forums. There were many, many installs and restarts during this process, causing a variety of problems and errors. Currently, I have purged all the nvidia drivers except the nvidia-current ones with the xorg.conf file generated by running nvidia-xconfig.
Current problems: Boot process gets to purple Ubuntu screen with 5 changing dots beneath, but hangs there forever. Pressing esc reveals that the boot process gets to "checking battery state [ok]", but fails to load the login screen. Pressing ctrl-alt F1 allows me to log-in and startx successfully starts Xorg with the proper Nvidia drivers.Question:How can I fix things so that the system does not hang at the Ubuntu loading screen? Or, how can I diagnose what is causing the error?I suspect there may be a problem with the xorg.conf file that's being generated by nvidia-xconfig. Please take a look:

I made the fatal mistake of hibernating on my Lenovo T61. Ubuntu wouldn't wake up after that, I tried pressing all kinds of key combinations and nothing. So I did a hard shut down and now Ubuntu won't start. On the grub menu I chose Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-7 normal mode and it just shows the screen that says "Ubuntu 10.10" and the four dots underneath indicating loading.
So I tried recovery mode and it stops at:

/dev/sda5: clean, 688078/4988928 files, 15488354/19939072 blocks
I also tried unplugging the laptop and removing the battery and putting it back in and plugging and restarting. Nothing changed. Then I tried restarting without the battery in and now the normal mode just shows a black screen and a flashing cursor. I also have the USB stick I created to install Ubuntu, which worked back then, but now, it won't start from the stick, I checked the Bios options and the USB is the first boot device, I really don't know how else I can make it start from the USB.

After an automatic upgrade on Saturday and Sunday. Now during booting, the screen is black until eventually the desktop appears. Well, almost black-- early on there is a quick flash in the top left corner of the screen, I think it says "acpid client 0.0 disconnected".The desktop comes up and seems to work just fine.
What is it that puts the "Ubuntu" and Five Red Dots on the screen, is it grub2, or is it gdm, or X, or is it some other "in between" process? (Sometimes in the past I have gotten the text-only "Ubuntu 10.10" instead of the graphic 5 dots. At that time I was thinking it was something about grub2 not dealing with my monitor resolution properly. But I'm not so sure)
Here goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?
I've got an older graphics card I'm trying to use. It actually runs fine through the bios and even works when fedora is loading. But once fedora finishes loading half the screen turns into thousands of multicolored horizontal lines.

Anyways, I downloaded Unbuntu 10.10 and burned it to a disk. The first time I booted up the machine I told it I wanted to try Ubuntu. I then left the machine and came back in 20min or so and it looked like it had successfully booted. However I quickly realized the screen was frozen. So I turned off the machine and decided I'd try again a few days later. Today I booted up the machine and I get to a black screen with Ubuntu on it with five dots below the wording. It freezes on this screen. I've rebooted several times but I keep getting to the same screen before it freezes.

I don't know if this is a new video driver failure (its a pretty old laptop, theres no need for new drivers) or if its a grub problem. Since I can't get to a grub it goes BIOS>Purple 10.4>nothing and I don't get a terminal login, the laptop is now considered bricked. View 1 Replies View RelatedTrying to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop (amd64) on this brand new system:
I connected the Dell ST2410 24" Full HD Widescreen LCD to the HDMI port on the ATI card and Windows 7 boots up just fine.
So then I put in the "ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso" CD in drive and reboot the system. I see the Ubuntu logo with the dots for a while and then the LCD goes black. The LCD reports that there is no signal from the system. The power light in front of the LCD goes from white to amber. The keyboard stops responding.
I power off everything, remove the Ubuntu CD and reboot the system and it works fine again with Windows 7.
The CD has no problems. At boot time, I checked it for defects and it reports no errors. At boot time, I used this same CD to check the system for memory errors. No memory errors. I used the same CD to install Ubuntu on other systems and had no problems.
The 16X DVDRW Drive has no problems. In Windows 7 it can play CDs and DVDs.
I guess it is the setting of the Opensuse, as i have tried different players, e.g SMPlayer, VLC adn Xine, all show blue dots on the player's screen.

My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.
My VX3000 webcam seems to be recognized by skype and kopete, however the image is terrible (green screen with some colour-ful dots at the top).

trying to install ubuntu on a 2nd partition on a Dell D630. The OS currently on it is Windows 7 Enterprise. I've used Windows 7 to repartition and have 80GB available for the Ubuntu install but when I put the CD in to run it gets detected as a bootable CD and starts to boot but freezes after Loading...I've left it for 2 hrs and it never progressed past that screen. I've also downloaded and burnt the ISO three times (twice in the 64 bit version and once in the 32). In all cases the install never advances. I've also tried a USB install but couldn't get that to boot

I got a new ASUS EeePC 1015PEM with Windows 7 with the intention to install OpenSuse 11.3 onto it for having a dual booting netbook with enough disk space.I'm installing from an external DVD drive, the checksums of the ISO were ok as well.However, the OpenSuse installer fails at starting up after selecting the action. It hangs, no matter what menu entry I chose, at "loading basic drivers", forever.Because this isn't necessarily an unknown problem I've tried some of the predefined kernel options of the main installer menu. Then I tried some manually entered kernel boot options that helped me in some other installations:
acpi=off, apm=off, CPUFreq=noNone of them seem to have an effect on the installers behaviorI hope that there is people who managed to solve this problem with an actual EeePC model... because I really don't know what I could any more. It's kind of frustrating to not even get past the kernel launch I haven't tried any other distros installation discs, but I don't even intend to. I want OpenSuse because I'm running it on our firms machines as well and don't like shifting between systems.
