I need to disable data prevention execution whenever I do boot Vista through GRUB but I don't know what command to use nor exactly where to put the command.On a single boot windows machine, all you would do is type the following at the command prompt and reboot: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOffAlso, GRUB lists my VISTA boot option simply as "other." Is there a way to change that?

After doing this, the only way my computer would boot up was if I had the external drive plugged inThen I accidentaly dropped my external drive and broke it. I decided to just install Fedora 11 onto my internal drive primarily because I figured it would would still be able to choose windows from the grub screen, but now there is no option for windows in grub. My other problem is that Fedora wont recognize any liveCDs that have tried to run from other distros (eg. LinuxMint7, Open SUSE)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Vista on my Acer 64-bit laptop first, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual-boot configuration. And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.

I have a dell and vista was installed on it, then i installed fedora 10 like it said on the fedora site from a boot disc. Now i have fedora but i don't have vista nor access to the memory it took up. I tried to restore to start over but i can't, and i need vista back.
Normally i would restore from the 10 G partition dell sets up for recovery but i'm not able to get to it, and i don't have my vista discs they're back at school.
What do i do?
I installed CentOS on an HP server with 5i RAID controller (so it's hardware RAID) and installed GRUB to the MBR. However, it boots straight to Windows XP without seeing the GRUB loader at all.
Configuration is this.
Windows installed on RAID0 drive
CentOS installed on a separate RAID0
Windows fileshare on RAID5
I'm guessing that since the RAID controller doesn't "see" separate drives in each array, that I'll need to do some "fudging" to get it to work, like maybe using Windows' pathetic loader to load GRUB and go from there, but I have no idea how. Do I have to make the drive "seeable" by Windows first by assigning it a drive letter under Windows Disk Manager, and then add it to the bootloader ini file?
I just spend 10 hours tryng to find a way to get my old grub working again after re-installing windows in an emergency, but it is not working...

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

Right now I am using the livecd to type this. I do not really need the grub loader since I am only running one OS, which is currently fedora. So I installed Fedora 10 on my second hard drive, deleting Ubuntu. On my first hard drive, I have Vista installed. During installation I followed a guide for dual-booting and it said not to install Grub to the MBR of the Windows partition, so I followed that advice...
This caused a Grub error 15 on the next boot. I booted the Fedora installation from the second hard drive. My hypothesis is that the Grub bootloader of Ubuntu was still installed somewhere and it could not find the Ubuntu linux kernel. Therefore, it gave error 15. So I installed Vista again and am hesitant to try Fedora again... How can I install Fedora alongside Vista properly (as dual boot)?
Or should I stay away, because it is apparently too difficult for me? Is it worthwhile to make a separate /home partition as I read that it is preferred to do a clean install every release? Could I just do that with Gparted and then assign the partition as /home in the Anaconda installer? The downside is that I then need to create a swap and / partition too, right?
Shrinking the Vista partition and format the rest of the HD as ext4 and install Fedora into that partition and put the GRUB in MBR, is this the right way to dual-boot fedora with Vista?

And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI did a fresh install of Fedora Core 10 32bit on my Caompaq Presario AMD 64 laptop which originally only had Vista ultimate 64bit. When I go in to grub and choose windows I get a screen that says:

I tried upgrading to my linux to fedora 12 through updates and that completely screwed up my computer. Next I burned a disc with F12 and tried to a clean install but the installer stops after 823 packages. I tried an older FC9 image and that does not go through either. Now I'm stuck , I cannot get to my windows because I cannot get to GRUB . Is there a way to just install GRUB and boot into windows. I see that GRUB is around package # 600 or so in the installation and it does get upto that point.I just need it to finish instead of barfing on packages (no skip option in linux installer how clever!)

My system has several hard drives. The important ones are these:
Sata 1 - Fedora 12
Sata 3 - Windows 7
Slave 1 - Storage
Sata 1 was NOT installed with grub. When I switch OSs, I do it by rebooting and choosing the other drive as primary.
I downloaded an ISO of Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit) and burned the DVD of it. I backed up Slave 1 and then booted off the Ubuntu DVD. I clicked on "Install Ubuntu", selected Slave 1, and installed onto it.
Subsequently I rebooted the machine, going into the BIOS to boot off Sata 1, so I could get my Fedora Firefox settings to replicate them under Ubuntu.
Instead of Fedora 12 booting, Grub 1.97 came up. It had 5 choices, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Repair, Memtest, some other Memtest, and Windows 7.
Subsequently I tried cracking the box and physically disconnecting Slave 1. When I rebooted Sata 1, it crashed to a grub command line. Apparently when Ubuntu installed, it infected Sata 1 with grub, even though it installed the rest of Ubuntu on Slave 1.
I really, really, REALLY need to get access to the Fedora 12 drive. It's got my work on it.
how I can get grub out of Sata 1 and regain access, or maybe reconfigure it so it recognizes the existence of Sata 1? Personally, I don't want it there; that's why I never installed it in the first place.
i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I have the Windows Boot CD.
Everytime I try to boot it after a restart, it goes through the setup process until it reaches the following blue-screen error message:
"A Problem Has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".
I am DEF keeping Ubuntu as my primary. I just want to have XP (Not Vista) for things that Ubuntu can't do (or can't do as effectively with my level of user ability -- yet ).
When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.
I've not been able to find a solution on the forums, so thought I'd post. My DELL PC came with Vista installed and I then added Ubuntu. This seemed to work fine although I didn't really use Ubuntu too much. Then last week I decide to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 12. I selected the replace existing Linux option during the install process.
After installation, Grub displayed 2 options: Fedora and Other. Fedora was fine, other didn't boot. After readinf around I added another option for vista, but this results in the following error:

I have installed Fedora 13 and Vista 64 in Dell Studio desktop. In the Vista, the machine is quiet, but in Fedora, it is quite noisy. I checked running processes, I am not seeing anything to do with PC fan.

When I select the Vista option in the Grub bootloader it restarts the computer and comes back to the grub menu screen again. I have run the boot_info_script. I will be booting Vista, XP, and then installing Linux with grub. So the Vista boot loader will be setup to boot both Windows, so then when I do install a Linux on the same hard drive, (all on separate partitions) what is the best method to boot up all 3 systems?Should I just allow grub to install on the master boot record, and then chainload XP and Vista. Or I could install grub on the boot sector of what will be my Kubuntu root partition, and then try to add this Linux to the Vista boot loader ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop which was originally running Windows Vista, I attempted to install Windows XP on via USB since the laptop couldn't boot the install disk (this has turned out to be a bad disk drive. This fell flat on its back and wouldn't even finish the install (although not before formating the Vista install in to oblivion). Although I was extremely careful to leave the Vista recovery intact. So I managed to get Ubuntu 8.10 (XFCE if that makes any difference) installed over USB. I was wondering, Could I use the GRUB louder to boot into the recovery drive? Laptop is a Toshiba Equium L350D

Now I would like to remove Ubuntu and GRUB as I intend to install Kubuntu/Mint at a later date. I understand I have to fix the master boot first and then remove ubuntu. I do not have Vista recovery CD as the it has been bundled with the system by Toshiba.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been doing some research on problems I have been having and I have narrows Compiz down to being the problem. I am running the prop Nvidea driver. I can use Unity 2d fine however I cannot use Unity at all I just get a blank screen with the mouse cursor no desktop ever loads. I have tried switching between gdm and kdm. I have now worked out that compiz looks like the problem. If I issue a compiz --replace at the terminal I get the same sort of problem I get when I log into the Unity 3d. I loose my left hand monitor (it goes black but I can move my mouse around) and on my right hand monitor I can operate things using the keyboard but when you click with the mouse it does not work although you can move it around fine. Never used Compiz and I dont know if anyone knows any troubleshooting I can try I have exhausted what I could find on the Internet (A few exports of global variables but none fixed anything).

What would be causing this error and how would I go about fixing it?
