I installed fedora 12 to a 4GB flash usb flash drive. When I reboot and select windowsxp, grub displays a blank screen and hangs up.

First time I am having issues with Centos.
I bought a Intel DQ45CB LGA Q45 Micro ATX Motherboard and I am installing the 64 bit version of centos.
The install of Centos goes just fine. However when I first try to boot up, after post is done, I get a blank screen. I do not even get on the Grub screen. No access to any of the ttys. No access to anything, files, folders. I only get a blkinking cursor, no command prompt, nothing.
This happened with Centos 5.2 and 5.3
Just for the hell of it, I installed XEN Xitrix and I have no issues like that.

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.
I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed.It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?
Not a major issue but my Ubuntu boot screen change to the old classic Orange theme after i installed Kubuntu on a different drive and ofcourse a new Grub loader as the Kubuntu installation prompted. It can't be because of the Kubuntu installation but i can't find any other reason for that to happen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP computer nvidia and AMD stickers on it and 1GB RAM. HDD is Parallel ATA. I downloaded both Ubuntu & Kubuntu Live CD. Both live CD's boot to a blank screen. After a (seemingly) successful install of kubuntu, the screen goes blank after GRUB.
Here are the details: With this HP, when i boot from ubuntu live CD the screen goes blank. It does not give any option about trying ubuntu, install, ubuntu, mem test. I just get a blank screen. On my ASUS laptop the ubuntu live CD goes straight into ubuntu live (without having to choose an option). It is not the CD When I boot from kubuntu live cd i get to the screen where i have an option to try kubuntu, install kubunt, memtest..
If I choose either try or install, my screen just goes blank & never progresses. Again, this live CD works on my ASUS laptop. At the bottom of the boot screen for the kubuntu live CD i noticed f1-f6 configurations. I was unable to change any other than language and f6 options. If I press f6 i get options which i can mark with an x. I don't know what any of these mean but I checked all of them and then on the boot menu popped up
BOOT **a whole bunch of text** I went onto install kubuntu and it no longer went to a blank screen. Rather it was a fuzzy grainy splash with the word KUBUNTU and loading dots underneath. Atlas it seemed to prevail, the installation process started (fuzziness went away). The installation screen now looks just as it did on my ASUS laptop. I continued through the steps with an installing on the entire HDD. The installation completed (with no signs of error). Screen said take out disc press enter.
I did so and my computer turned off. I power up the computer and the GRUB loads up. I have option of regular and fail safe. Both lead up to a blank screen. My monitor seems to think there is no signal and goes into standby mode. Perhaps the video card is not rendering correctly or not compatible.
First let me describe my system setup. I have windows, ubuntu 64 and ubuntu 32 present. I upgraded the 32 bit version to 10.4 with no problem. After upgrading the 64 bit version is when the problem occurred. I believe it has to do with the grub.cfg file. When I would choose the 64 bit version the screen would just go black, no furthur action. After making a few changes to the 64 bit selection in grub.cfg i come to a screen that says c to continue, s to skip mounting, and m for manual mount. Pressing s gets me in. Here is a copy of my grub.cfg.

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 yesterday. The ISO allowed me to install Ubuntu using Wubi and it worked just fine in Windows (I used a virtual drive to mount the ISO). I liked it enough to want to replace Linux Mint on the Laptop with it.After a LOT of trying, I was finally able to make the liveUSB of Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit version.[URL]isplays the boot menu and if I select 'try Ubuntu without installing', I am greeted with a blank screen which just does not go away until I hard reboot the system. Also, the grub I am getting is NOT the purple one which usually is the default; instead, its a dark screen with a black-n-white titled Ubuntu logo. So the question of using the NOMODESET doesn't arise at all. I am using Dell XPS 15 with dual OSes - Linux Mint and Windows 7. Both Mint and 7 are 64-bit OSes but I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit version.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am installing 11.04 on a Gigabyte E7AUM-DS2H with an onboard GeForce9400. I'm trying to turn this into an XBMC htpc. I'm not using xwindows or anything like that. Going straight to console for now. I'm experiencing the GRUB Black/Blank screen. I just don't know what else to try...
1. I've changed the kernel boot options, i.e. nomodeset
2. I've toggled the GRUB_GFXMODE=640x680 line
3. I've remembered GRUB-UPDATE
4. I can get into GRUB menu using SHIFT at bootup, messing around with settings and CLI there
5. I started with default nvidia drivers (not good), and then installed nvidia-current - that works better.
6. At the blank screen, I can hit ALT-F1 into console/tty fine.
7. If I use nosplash --verbose, I get a long wait with a blank screen, then the last bits of the bootup log and the login prompt.
8. And stuff I've forgot I've done....
Now what I really can't understand is that I have XBMC installed AND working beautifully. I can set XBMC to autorun with no trouble at all. It's just the period between bios and XBMC that it all goes dark. When I quit XBMC, I get a blinking cursor, which I can F1 to the console. What is it with GRUB??? What am I missing? Why is this so difficult? I COULD live with it, but its just not right, and I want to get it right.
I recently wanted to install ubuntu 11.04 on my computer (which had vista on it and I wanted to just completely wipe that out). After the install I noticed that my monitor would not receive signal during boot (I heard the little drum noise but my monitor said no signal). I've just installed ubuntu 9.10 from a live cd on to a 2nd HDD, with vista on the 1st. When I turn my PC on GRUB comes up and I can select ubuntu or vista, vista works but when I try to boot ubuntu the screen goes black with a small flashing underscore in the top left and then just goes completely black, nothing else happens after this. I've tried reinstalling from the live cd but when I go install nothing happens and the screen goes black again. When I was installing I changed the boot to something like scsi?

I am trying to install Ubuntu Server 10.10 on a computer with 5x 1.5 TB HDDs. I went through the process of partitioning the five hard drives into three partitions each:
sd*0 is a 300MB partition for /boot, RAID1, 2 active, 3 spare
sd*1 is a 500MB partition for swap, RAID1, 2 active, 3 spare
sd*2 is a 1.5TB partition for /, RAID5+LVM, 5 active, 0 spare.
md0 is the raid1 on sd*0
md1 is the raid1 on sd*1
md2 is the raid2 on sd*2
During the install, everything seemed to work fine with the formatter, but the installation ended in error. I booted into rescue mode and found that though all the drives were U (in /proc/mdstat), it was resyncing. I let this run (overnight) and the next day, jumped back in and installed the OS successfully.
However, after installing GRUB, when the installation process asked me to reboot, the system came back up with a blank screen (blank, save for a blinking cursor) and didn't move from there. I am thinking that the problem is GRUB, since I can boot into the main LVM partition via the rescue option on the install cd. Here's what bugs me:

For the first time, I booted up a Kubuntu live CD on a laptop (850 MHz, 40 GB HD, 256 MB RAM). Earlier releases (< 9.04) boot up fine but it does not. It hangs up right on the splash screen and I can view nothing but a blinking cursor on the console screen. The screen hangs when the loader reaches about 10% in the blue bar. No further information can be provided when there is just a blinking cursor at the console. The CPU shows no activity. The CD boots up fine on other computer. How do I go on installing Kubuntu? Is it a good option to use the Ubuntu Server CD and install all the Kubuntu desktop software on it once it is installed (Server edition is not live disk, and I do not have an alternate install CD)?

Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.

I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor.I have tried to grub-mkconfig and grub-update, both of which reported successful results.However on reboot I still get a blank screen for windows.This was not an issue with 9.04 and 9.10.so I don't think it is the machine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI successfully installed Fedora 11 from the DVD iso. At the end, the installation program prompts me to reboot the system. But when the boot loader appears after rebooting, there are only the old entries.
I have 2 IDE disks and one sata disk. The first IDE disk is hd0, the second IDE is hd1. The SATA disk is hd2. In the setup, I selected hd0 to install grub. Fedora 11 was installed on the SATA disk (hd2).[edit] I forgot to say, that Fedora 10 is on /dev/sda and Fedora 9 on /dev/sdb
I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOn the boot up to the Grub loader screen my monitor (Acer X193w) displays a "screen resolution not supported" message in a floating window, even though the Grub screen itself is displayed. It appears as a flattened rectangle, like wide screen format films on a TV (black bar top and bottom), the floating message on top of it. Once Debian is selected and boots, obviously my xorg.conf takes over and sets the 1440X900 resolution and everything is fine. But the Grub start up bothers me. How do I set the resolution of the Grub loader screen?

I created root, home, swap (8 gb), usr, var all in all about 100 gb (i know its much, but i have enough space :)
After the installation, fedora wanted to restart my laptop, i let it restart and GRUB came up, i chose "fedora 10" pressed enter and the laptop just restarted....did the same thign again, andn ow fedora was about 2 secs in the loading screen and then restarted again....i've chosen windows and the laptop isj ust restarting...i tried windows again and windows is loading ....but i dont get in fedora 10....

What I did was that I shrunk the F: part and then used that as partition for Ubuntu. Also please have a look at these screenshots, my partitiontables and such seems completely wacky to the raid: Where should the boot-loader go? I'm very, very new at this. I've had Ubuntu Netbook remix on my netbook for a time but still treat me as an utter beginner.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've attempted to upgrade my FC9 machine to the latest Fedora 12. I downloaded the iso image onto DVD and booted from the DVD into the installer GUI. Everything proceeded flawlessly until I tried to reboot from the new installation on the hard drive.When rebooting, the word GRUB appears and the system hangs. I've rebooted in rescue mode and the grub.conf appears to make sense, although I can't say that I understand all the entries. Based on some research, I suspect that the problem is ocurring even before grub.conf get read.
Can someone give me a tip on where to begin? I don't expect a detailed answer, but I don't even know where to get started. As far as I know, I have no unusual hardware configurations. No RAID, no booting from USB. The system is old (bought around 2002), but has plenty of memory and storage. One possible clue: my USB keyboard would not work during the installation phase, and I had to replace it with one that plugged into the PS/2 port. USB mouse seems to be fine.
When openSUSE was installed, GRUB information was installed in the Extended partition rather than in the MBR.
I have a triple boot system: Windows XP Pro, openSUSE, and another popular distro on Linux. The other distro put GRUB info in MBR. Now when I boot up it goes to member first. If I select openSUSE, the GRUB info in the extended partion is accessed and a 2nd selection screen is displayed.
I tried reloading the GRUB data for openSUSE selceting to install it in MBR but this does not seem to work.
How do I get rid of the GRUB stuff in the extended partition so that the 2nd GRUB screen does not get displayed?
I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

I installing Fedora 12. I did ALL the same as in the installation guide, GRUB installed into MBR. And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHere goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?
I was able to get Fedora 10 to run on VirtualBox. Since the system wouldn't let me set the resolution to anything bigger than 800 x 600, I decided to get the nVidia driver (I'm running the nVidia 8400m G). I did it through this guy's tutorial: [URL]... After rebooting, I see the loading bars and everything, but I get a blank screen with a cursor. After pressing ctrl+alt+F3, I was able to log in to the root and execute the "akmod builds the required kmod on bootup" under the "For GeForce 8 series" [URL]... After a reboot, I still get the same thing. Will I have to reinstall Fedora 10 and just not update the nVidia graphics drivers? I have a 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600 x 1050 and I would really like to take advantage of that.
