I have no other gripes but one minor problem; After the boot, the KDE4 desktop starts with a resolution of 1152x864 instead of 1280x1024 selected at display settings. Strangely, it seems to activate the correct resolution instantly when I enter the display settings menu that shows the intended resolution (no need to apply anything). Going to the settings menu is a bit bothersome after every boot.
View 2 Repliessetting a resolution that my monitor can't handle, and now I can't figure out how to get back to a setting that my monitor can handle. When I first made the bad setting, the screen went black except for an "Out of Range" message in the middle, and wouldn't let me see anything to put it back. I ended up going to a text screen with a <Ctrl-Alt-F1>, logging in as root, and rebooting. Now, I can use all of my other user IDs (root, KDE test, "email only," etc.) just fine, but if I log in to the one with the bad res. setting, it just blacks the screen and I have to reboot again. The xorg.conf file doesn't even have any options for setting resolutions any more, so there's no way to explicitly disallow the one I set, and "deleting" (renaming) xorg.conf didn't help.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy soundcard seems to have problems working with a certain game in windows xp so I decided to create a different installation of windows xp to use with onboard sound drivers instead. I had a backup of my clean current install on a dvd, so thought I would use this to speed up the procedure. I have two hard drives - the sata has my normal windows boot on and my ext4 ubuntu installation. The id drive has only files on. So I decided to shrink the partion on the ide drive using gparted and then create a new primary partition. I then installed my backup to this newly created partition.
At first it did not appear in the boot manager. Then I did a sudo update-grub and it now does, however whichever windows installation I now select from the grub, it always seems to boot into the same (old) installation, rather than the new one I installed from a backup. How I can actually get it to boot into this new installation? It might be due to windows boot ini settings or disc / partition flags or whatever, as I tried fiddling with those.
my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??
I've just upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze. It didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, one of the casualties being the proprietary nvidia driver I had previously installed. So I fixed that using the 'Debian way' rather than NVIDIA's installer, and that is now all fine. So far so good. However, when I boot up, pre starting X, my screen is a much lower resolution than it used to be (640x480, I think). Really chunky and ugly as it runs through the start up scripts. I assume that somewhere early in the startup scripts the nvidia driver is being loaded and set to a low resolution. Can someone advise me where this might be, and what to look for? Am I on the right track? I stress that this is before X is started. Once X has started the screen resolution is as I want.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSometimes, randomly, when turning on my Ubuntu laptop (HP 6730b, Ubuntu 10.04) I get a wrong monitor setting (much lower resolution than normal) and it is not possible to set it correctly because the menu buttons are wrongly placed and some are not present (probably there is not enough room for them) I have no other way than to restart the system to get the right resolution. Can someone tell me this inexplicable (to me) behaviour? Of course I didn't change anything in monitor settings...

Most times I start up, the image is 800x480 against the left edge, black bar on the right side, and a repeated image at the bottom. (I can attach a picture if needed.)I've been seeing this problem since Ubuntu 9.10, but it's more common recently with 10.10. If I keep shutting down and powering back on, eventually it will come up in 1024x600 as I desire. If that happens, then I avoid shutting down and only use Suspend instead. However, anytime I need to reboot (for updates, etc.) the 800x480 comes back.
The Acer logo / BIOS splash screen is also in 800x480, but I only see it switch back to 1024x600 after Ubuntu loads and is shut down. (Repeatedly clicking on/off/on/off never results in the resolution changing to 1024x600.) So, I'm still suspicious that Ubuntu is causing this (no hardware). WinXP used to be on this machine, and the problem was never seen.I don't think any proprietary drivers are needed (but I am still a Ubuntu noob.) When the problem is occurring, I see this result for xrandr:

I haven't been able to find xorg.conf ... but I've read that recent versions of Ubuntu create the content dynamically.Not sure what other details I should be including, at the risk of making this post too long.
i got a dell computer running ubuntu. it is equipped with an ATI radeon 5450, using a dell IN2010 1600x900 screen. when i installed ubuntu, the resolution was just fine. then i installed the ATI driver, and from that moment on, i have that strange behaviour: when i start ubuntu, the resolution seems set to 1440x900, but stretched to wide-screen mode, so the font is somehow blurry. when i turn the monitor off and then on again, everything is just fine.i have catalyst control center installed, and the resolution is set to 1600x900, but i still have the problem that i described.

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 with an Nvidia GeForce 8200 on board graphics card and am running the drivers installed from the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run which I obtained from the Nvidia web site. I also have this vga directive on the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst vga=0x346 Yet, sometimes when the system starts up it will go into 640x480 mode instead of 1680x1050. If I shutdown and restart a few times it will eventually come up in the proper resolution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have problem with resolution (@gnom desktop). In Yast --> videocard & monitor is all right. There is correct resolution 1366x768 (WXGA). Also the videocard ( I don't have really one, only chipset "Intel Mobile GM45" ) is correct recognized. But Monitor isn't recognized, and I don't know which one I have (It's notebook from acer).
Nevertheless if I go direct in monitor preferences (at the bottom the monitor with a ruler symbol) the resolution is set to 800x600 and I can only change to 640x480. The monitor is as 15" recognized (I have 15.4", even a bit more broadly - 1366x768) and now I don't know what to do. All symbols, all programs, everything is huge! How is it possible to configure the correct one resolution?

But since I wanted a better higher resolution I tried to set the monitor resolution to a higher value. After selecting a higher resolution first the screen went black and now it has a white background and is steady but has flickering areas. The system is still working. How can I go back to the resolution that was working?

However, a few days ago I connected my laptop to my TV, and since then the correct resolution setting has been LOST. Up until now it had a windows XP and (besides the fact that it had windows) it work with the correct resolution - 1920x1080. I installed the nvidia restricted drivers (the display is plain black otherwise) and my tv is being recognized as a CRT monitor. Guess it's because I'm using the vga connector instead of the dvi one. The problem is that the highest resolution it let me choose is 1024x768. I tried to mess around with the xorg.conf but i discovered it doesn't exist.
I just installed drivers for this nVidia GPU from the website. Now, whenever I boot, the screen resolution goes to 1024x768 instead of 1280x800 like I want it to. I have to change the screen resolution every time I boot into Ubuntu.

Except Grub taking control, which I didn't ask it to, but easy fix with yast, problem is firstly my graphics resolution is wrong, but I'm trying to work that one out myself as it always seems to be happening with distros I use on my machine. The weird thing is my desktop blinks! Every 10secs or so the whole screen goes blank and then reappears? I thought it might be the wrong refresh rate, but that's at 60Hz which is correct, would it be the resolution problem?

I was trying to running diagnostic's from Opensuse, but the blinking was getting on my nerves and I'm not familiar with a non Debian based OS......yet! I've got compiz and all running on the hardware in my Ubuntu install after editing the xorg.conf, could I simply copy that to my Opensuse install?
Basically, About 50% of the time, the system boots and sets the console resolution to something strange, and the console renders in a small box in the top-left hand corner of my screen. This causes problems not only with the display of the console, but with the display of X as well.
I have an Intel GL40 chipset on this laptop, with an integrated GMA4500 GPU. I am using the latest stable Intel video drivers (2.10.0-1), and have tried using the git drivers. In addition, the problem has been occuring since December, when I install Arch linux on this machine, I have just now had the time to address it. So basically, the issue has persisted with all driver versions since mid-December to the latest releases.

I have googled this and I refuse to believe the answer is "older video card" or "ubuntu". Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI rebooted my Fedora 11 server via SSH and when it came back up it booted the gui, but no option to log in just a mouse pointer and a spinning blue circle...nothing I can do to get it back.
I should add that I installed the latest updates this morning and this was the first reboot since then.

All BIOS settings I can find relating to self-starting are turned off.
Three times, this silly thing has booted - while closed and being otherwise ignored - all by it's lonesome. I've discovered it pretty much by accident when I notice the power LED and the wireless LED are lit. (You can see them glow under the front edge of the cover.)
Everything I can find in the BIOS setup, wake-on-LAN etc. has been turned off, and still this thing ghost-boots.
The CAT5 is disconnected, the local wireless radio is shut off, the power cord is unplugged, and the power button doesn't otherwise display any slop or sensitivity in movement.
No IR or remote in this Toshiba, just wireless and bluetooth.
In short ... WTH is up with this?!?
Any ideas what's going on here?
BTW, to add another interesting dimension to the problem, several weeks ago, I also discovered the HP Pavilion Fukushima laptop had booted itself once as well. Heard it beep when it posted about 0345hrs. When I came in to check, it was in the process of booting up ... while closed.

I've dualboot system grubloader made by Mandriva. These lines in Mandriva menu.lst is for Fedora 13.Why is it that Fedora seldom managed to boot successfully in first time? Mostly i've to boot 3,4 even 5 times to reach the desktop. That blue&white line (kernel PAE) is always visible on bottom of screen but many times it stopped to black screen and no gnome cursor after that.
