After closing some game my display resolution turned into 640x480 so I tried to modify xorg.conf to the following but I noticed that there are disappeared sides (at right & left) in my monitor and fonts appear small and ugly! How can I fix this issue?

I am planning on upgrading the video card in my computer, an NVidia GeForce 9500 GT video card, to something that can handle at least 1600x1200 24-bit resolution without noticeable choppiness other "slow-downs" in graphic display. The card in question does have one gigabyte of RAM, but the type of memory it utilizes is DDR2 instead of something, i.e. DDR3 and above, with greater speed. Admittedly, the system in question is used for gaming as well as work. I want to stick with the NVidia brand because it has worked well for me, but I am not sure what would be the correct line of cards to use.

And while I believe the card is still under warranty, I'd rather just buy a new fan and put it inmyself avoiding the hassle of sending it back and waiting for a replacement (and most likely refurbished) one. That being said, does anyone know where I could buy just the fan? Google has turned up nothing so far but the numbers on the fan are A4010-45LB-2UN-C1 and FA7C0412MA-SBNNA but I have no idea what these numbers are; the manufacturer is Cooler Master.

Now both work fine with other products (9500GT works fine on my other display and my Windows laptop works fine with the syncmaster 570). I also installed nvidia drivers via yast2. But how do I change the frequency? I've been trying to solve the problem for hours. Oh yeah when I connect my 570b to my 9500gt, I sometimes get a picture and sometimes don't. However when I get a picture colors are very strange and it flickers hardly.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I also have Galaxy (Nvidia) 9500 GT PCI-E card installed on it. I can get both monitors (Acer X223w) to work but every time I shut off the computer and turn it back on the second monitor is shut off. I just need to turn it back on using Nvidia X Server Settings. I have tried to save my X configuratin file but I keep getting an error of:" Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'. I have a feeling this is because I am not signed in as root. Is this correct? If this is the case is there a way to get to sign in as root not using the command lines? Otherwise they need to remove this button. I can manually create a backup (copy paste into a text file). I think. Getting back to my Xorg.conf file, I think I need to modify it to have two screens. I have also got some information on my video card using the lspci command. I think I need some information from this. I have written below (towards the bottom) what I think the file should be. Now before I do this, does anybody know of an easy way to back up my whole computer? With my luck I am about to screw something up big time. I think I can just get away with the text file that I copied from the Xorg. Worst case scenario I will just manually replace the file.

Is there a way to fix this without having to buy a new card? I've read that the GeForce 7100 is pretty crappy, but I've got no money to space at the moment.
I recently purchased a cheap computer to use for everyday tasks. It came pre-loaded with Windows 7. The monitor I am using is a Vizio VX20L. It's native resolution is 1366X768. I have no problem with the screen resolution in Windows 7 but in Ubuntu, I am having some issues. I have the propriatary Nvidia driver installed in Ubuntu but for some reason I cannot get the screen resolution right. I am currently using a resolution of 1360x768 and the right part of my desktop is not on the screen.
I have tried to adjust the screen size using the monitor settings, but I still cannot get the whole screen to show up. If I set the resolution to Auto in the NVIDIA X Server Settings, it defaults to 1280X1024 and I can see my whole desktop, but it is streeeeetched. There I had legacy driver from nVidia but resolution was degraded to 640x320 and in their version 8.10 I cannot edit xorg.config (there was not anythig about resolution) I hoped in fedora i`ll fix this.

I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.
So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.
I'm new to linux, and i have installed linux slackware 64bit..after a complete setup i downloaded the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers, the binary package from nvidia.com..i have a geforce gts250..it's the first time i encounter this issue..i have already installed the driver with my old monitor (an lg flatron with max 1680x1050)and it always worked fine..with this new monitor (lg w2243s with a res of 1920x1080) it seems that every bin package from nvidia don't recognize the monitor...after installing i find a res of 640x480 and i get stucked, i tried to force it by editing the xorg.conf file..but nothing changes..how can i get the max res with nvidia bin package?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot get the restricted Nvidia drivers or the Nouveau drivers to work completely. If the Nouveau drivers are being used (after an "apt-get purge nvidia-*"), the text mode seems to work ok, but the X nouveau driver acts as if it cannot recognize the card. The only way I can get into X is to make sure I have the "nv" driver in the xorg.conf. I can then get into X normally.
If I install nvidia-current, the machine will just lock up at the splash screen. The Xorg.0.log file is zero bytes. I've checked and installing nvidia-current properly blacklists the nouveau drivers and I see no evidence in the messages file that the nouveau drivers tried to load in text mode. In fact, it shows the nvidia driver loading for console mode. I've tried the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel option as well, but that doesn't do anything. This is a fairly new nvidia card, maybe only a couple months old. I think it's been out for quite some time though. But it was working fine under Karmic with the restricted drivers. I really want to get this working as I need full support of the video card.

I have a 64 bit computer with a 64 bit distribution of Ubuntu. The driver for the onboard video card wasn't supported beyond 8.04, so I didn't upgrade. Yesterday, I bought a NVIDIA GeForce 210 video card. I installed it and Ubuntu detected it and worked, but the resolution was limited to 640x480 (I think). I figured this would be corrected by updating, so I updated to 9.04. When I had to restart, the option to select which OS (Linux or Win) came up, I selected 9.04, and the ubuntu symbol came on. The status bar went to the end and the screen turned black, flickered 5 times, turned black and stopped progressing. The xorg.conf file is:

I have thrown together a frankenstein of spare parts to stream video onto my TV. The GPU is a NX6800GS (geforce 6800). I have used the restricted driver tool to intsal the recommended driver. The VGA output works fine. My problem is that when using the nvidia tool to set up my TV through S-Video on the graphics card, the TV is not detected. This puts me at a dead end, as every how to guide on this forum assumes the nvidia control panel can detect the TV. Can i force video to play over the S-Video port? Do i need some magical unicorn drivers for the card? Any help is appreciated (even a simple "this setup will never work").

The problem is that after installation it only support resolution upto 1024x768, while my LCD has native resolution at 1600x900. I have installed the most recent nvidia driver $sudo apt-get install nvidia-current However, I was not able to config it:

I bought an asus U33JC and except for one major issue (frame tear) it works fine out of the box using 11.04 64bit, with some minor issues easily solved (suspend, upside down cam on skype, flash and java). The U33JC has optimus, but also a bios option to disable the Intel GMA. So I could use the on chip Intel GMA or disable it and use the discrete GF310M.
The major issue I have now is poor video playback. Frame tear occurs in every single configuration I tried: Either using the internal Intel GMA, or disabling the Intel via bios option and using the NVidia proprietary drivers or even using bumblebee. This frame tear occurs also on the desktop, but the real problem is that it's very noticeable on video, specially when connecting my HD TV via HDMI. I tested 720p h264 mkv videos and even low res xvid avis in totem and mplayer/Smplayer all equally poor. Using mplayer I tried several vo options, such as xv (intel? xv) and x11, and playback is poor on all of them. Oh, and I don't use compiz (don't care for it). Refresh rate is 60Hz, and should be the right one. It works fine with vlc on the soon to be transformed into free space windows7, but that's not an option for me. I used Ubuntu before on a laptop, but I usually use Gentoo, so I'm not familiar with the ubuntu distro.
The purpose of this laptop was to be my "tv media center" when at home and my work laptop for travelling (13 inch ! ). But it failed miserably on the first count. I'm still using my old celeron based Gentoo laptop with RGB out to my tv for that, still with much better results (it can decode only up to 720p, which is fine). But it is dying! I really don't understand why playback is so poor. Could messing with xconf be the answer?

I just tried to install KDE in Debian testing on the machine with Nvidia Geforce 7300 GS using Nvidia driver (280.13-1). However KDE breaks when compositing is enabled, and the only way to make it work is to disable compositing. This problem seems to exist for a while already:[URL].. Is it really Nvidia's problem, or something with KDE? Is there a point in contacting Nvidia about it?

My son and I are having trouble getting the graphics card to work properly in his computer. The resolution is good, but the graphics card is not fully functioning. He works on animation and graphics of several kinds, and the graphics programs cannot run without a fully functioning graphics card.
The computer will not run Blender and other graphics programs. Nor will it even allow for the "normal" "Visual Effects" in the "Appearance Preferences." (It comes up with the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled," after it tries to find the driver.) The system is:

We know the graphics card works because it works in Windows. (We set up the computer to boot off of either of two hard drives -- either in Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.10, karmic.) Neither my son nor I understand much of the terminology on your forums, although I have been using Ubuntu for some years and have read quite a bit. (I also have the "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" book.) I love Ubuntu, but sometimes I just cannot figure out how to get some things running. We have tried many different ways of installing the drivers and setting up the xorg.conf file. We have followed the instructions on this and other threads. We also installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-190.53-pkg2.run, as well as 173 and 185. The screen will only work at a proper resolution when we set the "Driver" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. The screen goes completely blank and dead if we set the "Driver" to "nvidia." Then we need to reboot in safe mode and edit the xorg.conf file with VIM.

I recently upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and shortly before the release upgraded from a geforce 8400gs to my geforce GT240 and noticed no difference on Karmic. I read somewhere that the capability of video cards would be applied further with Lucid. Since installing Lucid I've noticed a severely reduced sharpness and severely increased contrast, changing the contrast in X server has no effect. My hardware driver is activated but not in use and no online fix I've attempted has been successful in resolving the issue. Is it possible to use a gt240 on lucid with no hassle and is there any way I can maximize my video cards capabilities?

Both installs failed when it tried to set up python-support. Returned an exit status of "10". I don't know what that means. I could really use some help, because I just installed UT2K4, and without the driver, I can't play it. I'm running the latest release, as noted in the thread title. Dunno if it helps, but it was a clean install, because an alternate iso upgrade failed and mucked up 10.04.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have problem with resolution (@gnom desktop). In Yast --> videocard & monitor is all right. There is correct resolution 1366x768 (WXGA). Also the videocard ( I don't have really one, only chipset "Intel Mobile GM45" ) is correct recognized. But Monitor isn't recognized, and I don't know which one I have (It's notebook from acer).
Nevertheless if I go direct in monitor preferences (at the bottom the monitor with a ruler symbol) the resolution is set to 800x600 and I can only change to 640x480. The monitor is as 15" recognized (I have 15.4", even a bit more broadly - 1366x768) and now I don't know what to do. All symbols, all programs, everything is huge! How is it possible to configure the correct one resolution?
I have a desktop with nvidia 9300 connected to a 37" LG hdtv lcd with a VGA analog cable. I'm using this machine as a media center. Up until now it had a windows XP and (besides the fact that it had windows) it work with the correct resolution - 1920x1080. I installed the nvidia restricted drivers (the display is plain black otherwise) and my tv is being recognized as a CRT monitor. Guess it's because I'm using the vga connector instead of the dvi one. The problem is that the highest resolution it let me choose is 1024x768. I tried to mess around with the xorg.conf but i discovered it doesn't exist.
