Ubuntu :: Plymouth/Grub: Wrong Resolution On HD Screen

Oct 24, 2010

I've got a HD screen: 1920x1080p. Grub (1.98 ) has the resolution: 800x600 and Plymouth also. It is irritating me that plymouth shows a very ugly purple splash screen in a very low resolution (800x600). How can I fix that? I've got an ATI Radeon HD 4670, and use the drivers from ATI...

General :: Pre X Screen Resolution Gone Wrong

May 2, 2011

I've just upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze. It didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, one of the casualties being the proprietary nvidia driver I had previously installed. So I fixed that using the 'Debian way' rather than NVIDIA's installer, and that is now all fine. So far so good. However, when I boot up, pre starting X, my screen is a much lower resolution than it used to be (640x480, I think). Really chunky and ugly as it runs through the start up scripts. I assume that somewhere early in the startup scripts the nvidia driver is being loaded and set to a low resolution. Can someone advise me where this might be, and what to look for? Am I on the right track? I stress that this is before X is started. Once X has started the screen resolution is as I want.

But since I wanted a better higher resolution I tried to set the monitor resolution to a higher value. After selecting a higher resolution first the screen went black and now it has a white background and is steady but has flickering areas. The system is still working. How can I go back to the resolution that was working?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Wrong Screen Resolution Options On Media Centre

Apr 22, 2011

I have a desktop with nvidia 9300 connected to a 37" LG hdtv lcd with a VGA analog cable. I'm using this machine as a media center. Up until now it had a windows XP and (besides the fact that it had windows) it work with the correct resolution - 1920x1080. I've installed Ubuntu (the latest available) after to many crashes during hd movies...

I installed the nvidia restricted drivers (the display is plain black otherwise) and my tv is being recognized as a CRT monitor. Guess it's because I'm using the vga connector instead of the dvi one. The problem is that the highest resolution it let me choose is 1024x768. I tried to mess around with the xorg.conf but i discovered it doesn't exist.

Debian :: Grub And Boot Console On Wrong Screen?

Nov 16, 2010

I've recently installed a new graphic card after my old one started to go belly-up and it works nicely in X with twinview. The card have one VGA, one DVI and one HDMI. I have the monitor connected to the VGA and my projector connected to the DVI. However, when I boot the monitor (VGA) don't receive a signal. It is dead until X comes up (and when X comes up it does exactly what I want, it uses the VGA monitor as the main screen).

I had this setup on my old card to and it worked fine. Grub and boot console showed on both screens and I never had to tweak anything to make it do this.

how to enable the VGA outlet, either have boot enabled or only the VGA enabled (either way is fine by me but I really want to see Grub and the boot console on startup).

Ubuntu :: What Can Affect Plymouth Resolution

Oct 19, 2010

I have two Ubuntu installations: a full one and a light/custom. The full one has every default package installed using the Live CD and some extra packages I've been adding as I need them, the custom one is created using debootstrap and then I add some packages: xserver, fluxbox, alsa... among others.

But I have one problem: plymouth shows a low-res splash screen for the custom installation, while it works great with the full one. Both running on the same motherboard and with the same monitor. Besides, I need to set the FRAMEBUFFER=y option in the custom installation to make plymouth show the splash screen at boot.

I've tried setting GRUB_GFXMODE, GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX for GRUB without any change, I'd like to know what other programs/drivers/configurations may affect Plymouth resolution so that I could find what is preventing my custom installation from showing a nice plymouth splash screen.

General :: Set The Resolution Of The Grub Loader Screen?

Jun 15, 2011

On the boot up to the Grub loader screen my monitor (Acer X193w) displays a "screen resolution not supported" message in a floating window, even though the Grub screen itself is displayed. It appears as a flattened rectangle, like wide screen format films on a TV (black bar top and bottom), the floating message on top of it. Once Debian is selected and boots, obviously my xorg.conf takes over and sets the 1440X900 resolution and everything is fine. But the Grub start up bothers me. How do I set the resolution of the Grub loader screen?

Sometimes, randomly, when turning on my Ubuntu laptop (HP 6730b, Ubuntu 10.04) I get a wrong monitor setting (much lower resolution than normal) and it is not possible to set it correctly because the menu buttons are wrongly placed and some are not present (probably there is not enough room for them) I have no other way than to restart the system to get the right resolution. Ubuntu :: Acer Aspire One Wrong Resolution?

Jan 14, 2011

My Acer AspireOne netbook has a native resolution of 1024x600. Most times I start up, the image is 800x480 against the left edge, black bar on the right side, and a repeated image at the bottom. (I can attach a picture if needed.)I've been seeing this problem since Ubuntu 9.10, but it's more common recently with 10.10. If I keep shutting down and powering back on, eventually it will come up in 1024x600 as I desire. If that happens, then I avoid shutting down and only use Suspend instead. However, anytime I need to reboot (for updates, etc.) the 800x480 comes back.

The Acer logo / BIOS splash screen is also in 800x480, but I only see it switch back to 1024x600 after Ubuntu loads and is shut down. (Repeatedly clicking on/off/on/off never results in the resolution changing to 1024x600.) So, I'm still suspicious that Ubuntu is causing this (no hardware). WinXP used to be on this machine, and the problem was never seen.I don't think any proprietary drivers are needed (but I am still a Ubuntu noob.) When the problem is occurring, I see this result for xrandr:

Code:
swope@netbook:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 480, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)[code]....

I haven't been able to find xorg.conf ... but I've read that recent versions of Ubuntu create the content dynamically. Not sure what other details I should be including, at the risk of making this post too long.

Ubuntu :: No Plymouth Splash Screen On 10.04?

Jul 1, 2010

I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my Desktop computer. Prior to KDM loading, all I get is a blank, black screen with no Plymouth splash screen. I'm confident that this issue is not related to KDE but would apply to all Ubuntu variants. Here are my computer specs:

Kubuntu 10.04 x64 running with all updates
Dell Studio Desktop
Intel Quad-Core Processor 2.66Ghz
8GB ram
Intel Integrated Graphics

I should note that I have full desktop effects running smoothly under KDE with compositing enabled, so my integrated graphics is not necessarily the problem unless Plymouth is not loading the graphics drivers successfully.

Ubuntu Installation :: Plymouth Low Res Boot Screen

Apr 11, 2010

I have searched the forums on this problem and I am still not really clear on the fix for this or even if I should wait for final release. I am running Lucid 64bit and have upgraded through the cycle from Karmic. I am using nvidia proprietary drivers. All the time that the Plymouth boot screen has been available it has been in low resolution. As we are now at beta 2 I am torn between searching a fix or waiting for the final release. So, from what I have read I need the 'nouveau' driver to fix this issue.

1. How do I install this in place of my existing nvidia proprietary driver?

2. I am a little bit confused by the hardware drivers selection panel telling me that I have an nvidia driver installed but that it is not in use-I read that this might be a bug?

Fedora :: Can't Undo Wrong Resolution In 10/Gnome?

Mar 28, 2009

setting a resolution that my monitor can't handle, and now I can't figure out how to get back to a setting that my monitor can handle. When I first made the bad setting, the screen went black except for an "Out of Range" message in the middle, and wouldn't let me see anything to put it back. I ended up going to a text screen with a <Ctrl-Alt-F1>, logging in as root, and rebooting. Now, I can use all of my other user IDs (root, KDE test, "email only," etc.) just fine, but if I log in to the one with the bad res. setting, it just blacks the screen and I have to reboot again. The xorg.conf file doesn't even have any options for setting resolutions any more, so there's no way to explicitly disallow the one I set, and "deleting" (renaming) xorg.conf didn't help.

Ubuntu :: Purple/black Boot Screen No Plymouth.

After upgrade, boot only gave me a blank, purple screen, so I used his revert script then tried this : [URL]

But I'm only getting a black screen. Removing vga=795 option only make it stay purple. It might be because of the multiples workarounds I tried back in 10.10, but I don't know how to clean that up. I have an ATI HD Radeon Pro 2400 card with free drivers (but I was using the proprietary ones during upgrade).
