on an older computer. I get as far as the screen that asks if I want to try or install and then I get a message saying the screen resolution is wrong and I need to reset. I even disabled the hard drive in bios and still get this message. computer was built to run xp and had ubuntu on it before. I tried to upgrade the nvidia driver and broke it.

Im getting no sound at all. How can I change the screen resolution. 800 x 600 is the highest it will go. Im getting really discouraged with Ubuntu. Alot of people seem to have the same problems I am having but there is no solutions. I've checked the MEMTEST and passed, done a disk check and passed.

I am able to change the resolution to 1280x1024 but have to do it by the nVidia configuration tool. The tool then allows me to 'Save to X Configuration'which it appears to have done successfully.See the sections from my 'etcx11xorg.conf' file. This is the state of the file after a reboot by the way.how I can get my desired resolution to persist after I reboot?

I have just bought a new Acer 23" 1920x1080 flatscreen. I used to have an old fashioned 1280x1024 flatscreen.Now the problem is, every single time when I log on Ubuntu resets my screen res. to 1280x1024. So every time I have to use the Nvidia Settings to set my screen res to 1920x1080 and every time I have to place my panel widgets back in the right place and order, because of that, which is quite annoying.GDM has no problems though, it always displays in the right resolution.I use a Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card and the nvidia-current driver on Ubuntu 10.04 i386. I cannot use the Gnome monitors manager to set my resolution. Every time it sends me to Nvidia Settings.This is my Xorg.conf;

Whenever I restart my system, the screen resolution has been reset to 1600 x 1200. I change it in "configure desktop" and it's ok for the session but it changes back on reboot. Also, the font sizes are too small for xterms. Sure, I can ctrl+ to increase but why should I have to do this each time I login? I noticed others seem to be having this problem. Is there an upgrade that will fix this? I'm using 11.2 and kde.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I know now that I reach the login screen, and I know to hit control, alt, f1. However, all attempts to reset the resolution have failed. Here's how it went down. I was working with nvidia driver. Already was frustrated I couldn't get a working wide screen setting for my toshiba hd tv/monitor but that's a seperate issue. I was trying to get the driver to recognize my separate monitor to an hd tv in the living room using the video out. works fine with windows. I got it to recognize, it made me save settings, and then restart. Note resolution settings are set to automatic right now. Then when I restart, I get to ubuntu splash screen, it plays the chime, and shows a blank black screen. Control alt f1 brings me the menu.
I have been told to type (this is just quick type, I used the proper commands in reality)
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

I found one article that gave a three step process.

Nothing gave me any of the results I expected from command doesn't exist to completely irrelevant menus. Start me from the beginning to what I should do. Yes I logged in properly with my username and password to. Do the 'etc' in the command need to be filled with something else like a drive letter or something. I'm so lost, should I disconnect my tv? Also I tried running in safe mode and it said something about display not found.
I've just upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze. It didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, one of the casualties being the proprietary nvidia driver I had previously installed. So I fixed that using the 'Debian way' rather than NVIDIA's installer, and that is now all fine. So far so good. However, when I boot up, pre starting X, my screen is a much lower resolution than it used to be (640x480, I think). Really chunky and ugly as it runs through the start up scripts. I assume that somewhere early in the startup scripts the nvidia driver is being loaded and set to a low resolution. Can someone advise me where this might be, and what to look for? Am I on the right track? I stress that this is before X is started. Once X has started the screen resolution is as I want.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm a relatively new Debian user, having come from Ubuntu. I recently bought a Dell micro-server to function as my Kodi media player. I installed an nVidia GeForce 210 to output to my Pioneer home theatre amplifier. The amp takes all my inputs (eg. Satellite set-top decoder, PS3, Kodi etc) and outputs to the TV. I installed XFCE as my desktop environment so that I could still interact with it via VNC.
Everything is working great except for one exceptionally annoying problem! Every day, I find that I am having to VNC into the desktop, load up nVidia X Settings, and change my screen resolution from Auto to 1920x1080 because it has lost the display configuration and the screen is blank. I presume this happens when the amplifier switches from one input to the next. It doesn't matter if I save the configuration to my X11.conf file or not - it still resets itself.
Before, this setup would run for months without any intervention (Same amplifier + HP microserver + Ubuntu + LXDE + ATI video card), so I'm pretty confident that the issue is either Debian, XFCE, or the nVidia card.
i have just tried ubuntu 9.10 runing the "try ubuntu without changing" mode and the screen resolution was totaly off, it was 800 x 600 and there was only one other optinion wich was even worse , my screen res on windows is 1366 x 798.... Is this a problem that would rectify itself if i installed ubuntu properly or is there something i need to do?

But since I wanted a better higher resolution I tried to set the monitor resolution to a higher value. After selecting a higher resolution first the screen went black and now it has a white background and is steady but has flickering areas. The system is still working. How can I go back to the resolution that was working?

Up until now it had a windows XP and (besides the fact that it had windows) it work with the correct resolution - 1920x1080. I've installed Ubuntu (the latest available) after to many crashes during hd movies...
I installed the nvidia restricted drivers (the display is plain black otherwise) and my tv is being recognized as a CRT monitor. Guess it's because I'm using the vga connector instead of the dvi one. The problem is that the highest resolution it let me choose is 1024x768. I tried to mess around with the xorg.conf but i discovered it doesn't exist.
I just installed drivers for this nVidia GPU from the website. Now, whenever I boot, the screen resolution goes to 1024x768 instead of 1280x800 like I want it to. I have to change the screen resolution every time I boot into Ubuntu.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe installation went okay (to start with) on my newly formatted hard drive (after death of Windows XP), but I got an error about 3/4 of the way through. The system said something about starting the desktop to try to resolve or fault find the problem. So I now have a desktop with access to all the menu system. I am feeling my way around slowly getting used to the environment. I think there are bits missing from the install but with no frame of reference I cannot tell what exactly is wrong. One obvious problem is my Monitor screen resolution. In Monitor preferences it is set as 'unknown monitor'.
The detect monitor button does nothing and the resolution is set as 2048 x 1536 which is just too small to see properly on the screen. I am currently using zoom to increase within a window to use at all. I have tried opening a terminal and using the xrandr command which reports the following:

I've borrowed a copy of 11.4 DVD install disc from someone at work, everything went fine install wise. Except Grub taking control, which I didn't ask it to, but easy fix with yast, problem is firstly my graphics resolution is wrong, but I'm trying to work that one out myself as it always seems to be happening with distros I use on my machine. The weird thing is my desktop blinks! Every 10secs or so the whole screen goes blank and then reappears? I thought it might be the wrong refresh rate, but that's at 60Hz which is correct, would it be the resolution problem?

I was trying to running diagnostic's from Opensuse, but the blinking was getting on my nerves and I'm not familiar with a non Debian based OS......yet! I've got compiz and all running on the hardware in my Ubuntu install after editing the xorg.conf, could I simply copy that to my Opensuse install?
I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

I've got a strage problem with openssh-server on debian lenny. I've done setup of sshd and basically everything works fine. I can check the fingerprint of the ssh-keys on the server and it matches with the fingerprint shown on the client for the first connection. so the key is stored in the known-hosts-file on the client.
The problem occurs after a "connection reset by peer" (i guess when the connected client goes to sleep or a timeout occures)!
After such a reset, when I try to connect to the server, the banner "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!" appears and the shown fingerprint of the server-key is totally wrong (it differs from the one on the server, BUT it is everytime when this problem occurs the same fingerprint). If I nevertheless remove the correct key from the known-host-file and accept the new key, I still can't login (permission denied).
To fix this situation temporarily I just need to restart the networking on the server. After the network-restart I get (again) the correct fingerprint of the server-key and can login without problems. Until the next connection reset.
just installed ubuntu10.04 has set monitor resolution to 800x600 i need 1920x1080 i have been at this for two days now and getting absolutely no where , i could set this on windows in 5 minutes , why does it need to be so hard on ubuntu, i really prefer ubuntu to windows but problems like this really can drive one to despair. i have tried so many different web sites and follow instructions but keep getting command not found which i dont understand why. here is an example of something i tried in terminal xrandr --output VGA --mode 1920�1080 --rate 50 i get warning: output VGA not found; ignoring.many other things i have tried come up with command not found .

I am not proud of the results:So I used the Synaptic tool, and since that time the gnome-screensaver shows a black screen instead of any GL-animation in the preview-windows (the small and the big one). After the installation process finished I did reboot. When BIOS loaded instead of the Ubuntu boot screen a message from the monitor presented like this:

I got my hands recently on openSUSE 10.2 (ppc) to put on my b&w powermac g3. i can boot from the cd and it gives me a text prompt and the choices install, rescue, and something to do with the network (which is whatever), and a not-very-helpful help option. so i type install, and my monitor says "input not supported." i figure, "ok, that's cool, i'll just plug in one of my old crt monitors 'cause it must be trying to use a resolution lower than my fancy-schmancy one supports." plug in the old one, restart, type "install," same thing. i'm not new to linux, but i don't really have any options with this prompt that any manner of googling or thread-hunting can uncover which allows me to specify the resolution at which the yast installer starts (or refresh rate, maybe that's it...) or lets me keep it in text mode through the installation. I tried typing "install textmode=1" which seems to do nothing special (same result as just "install") and just "textmode=1" (which is a fundamentally retarded approach, but what else am i supposed to do?). Once the operating system is installed and i can boot into a terminal, i figure can edit the xorg.config to use the resolution i want, but i can't very well install the system without seeing what i'm doing! It's just confusing 'cause it doesn't seem to like any display i give it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSometimes, randomly, when turning on my Ubuntu laptop (HP 6730b, Ubuntu 10.04) I get a wrong monitor setting (much lower resolution than normal) and it is not possible to set it correctly because the menu buttons are wrongly placed and some are not present (probably there is not enough room for them) I have no other way than to restart the system to get the right resolution. Can someone tell me this inexplicable (to me) behaviour? Of course I didn't change anything in monitor settings...
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Acer AspireOne netbook has a native resolution of 1024x600. Most times I start up, the image is 800x480 against the left edge, black bar on the right side, and a repeated image at the bottom. (I can attach a picture if needed.)I've been seeing this problem since Ubuntu 9.10, but it's more common recently with 10.10. If I keep shutting down and powering back on, eventually it will come up in 1024x600 as I desire. If that happens, then I avoid shutting down and only use Suspend instead. However, anytime I need to reboot (for updates, etc.) the 800x480 comes back.
The Acer logo / BIOS splash screen is also in 800x480, but I only see it switch back to 1024x600 after Ubuntu loads and is shut down. (Repeatedly clicking on/off/on/off never results in the resolution changing to 1024x600.) So, I'm still suspicious that Ubuntu is causing this (no hardware). WinXP used to be on this machine, and the problem was never seen.I don't think any proprietary drivers are needed (but I am still a Ubuntu noob.) When the problem is occurring, I see this result for xrandr:

I haven't been able to find xorg.conf ... but I've read that recent versions of Ubuntu create the content dynamically.Not sure what other details I should be including, at the risk of making this post too long.
i got a dell computer running ubuntu. it is equipped with an ATI radeon 5450, using a dell IN2010 1600x900 screen. when i installed ubuntu, the resolution was just fine. then i installed the ATI driver, and from that moment on, i have that strange behaviour: when i start ubuntu, the resolution seems set to 1440x900, but stretched to wide-screen mode, so the font is somehow blurry. when i turn the monitor off and then on again, everything is just fine.i have catalyst control center installed, and the resolution is set to 1600x900, but i still have the problem that i described.
View 7 Replies View Relatedevery since I installed natty in march my refresh rate has been wrong this makes it where I can not see the boot screen, this was not a big problem until I installed the developmental version of ubuntu to test for bugs and I can not see the boot screen, I went to the page that tells how to change the rate but I get this error when I ran xrandr Failed to get size of gamma for output default. This showing my monitor as default it does not show a name, I manually set it up in x server and it shows the correct rate and the correct monitor, but not in monitor preferences.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) user.Everytime I start Ubuntu up, before the login screen, I get a message that there's something wrong with the graphics or videocard, telling me that I'd have to run Ubuntu in low-resolution. Okay, fine, log-in screen, I log in. The wallpaper loads. That's all that loads. No panels at all, no desktop icons, nothing. Alt + F2 doesn't work and I strongly fear that I'd have to reinstall Ubuntu, and that's a great loss to all my files. I currently can't afford external memory and I don't have external memory in possession.
