When i boot the fedora image from a dvd i'm not being taken to the fedora live system screen, instead i see a bunch a words on a black screen (looks like DOS)...am i having compatibility issues or what? ive tried 32bit, 64bit versions as well as different desktops. does anyone have any ideas? my laptop is brand new: toshiba e205 running windows 7 ultimate..
View 2 RepliesI get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

I try to boot the live CD and try xubuntu without installing, and my computer just hangs at a black screen, cuts off, then goes black and repeats. View 2 Replies View RelatedTried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.
I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.
i did a preupgrade from fedora 10, i have a new line in grub with the "preupgrade to fedora 11" ... when i choose this.. anaconda run with the normal blue screen running anaconda... but a blacks screen apper with the mouse... the installation not follow and only the black screen with the mouse i can see...some line add to the kernel line of preupgrade fedora 11 to run with another graphical configuration

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.
I have a 8.2 MBP with a 1680x1050 screen and a 6490M graphics card. I'm trying to boot from a usb stick ubuntu live. I'm able to get to the ubuntu menu, asking to install or start live boot, but when I select live boot I get a black screen( backlight is still on but entire screen is black). I've waited at that screen for quite some time with no luck.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been installing Linux Mint with OSX on a bunch of iMacs, and its been working perfectly excpet for one of the iMacs. The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.

I did a cold boot and the same thing happened. So, I tried it a third time and all is fine. I'm running FC11 and I'm glad everything is back to normal,but what might have caused this in the first place?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've had Windows 7 installed for a few months now and would like to install Fedora 12 on a separate partition. I've tried this three times now, all of them ending with something wrong. The problem that exists for me now is that when I install Fedora 12 and boot up for the first time in GRUB, Fedora 12 works fine. ut when I boot into Windows 7 from GRUB, it just comes up with a black screen and says "BOOTMGR is missing; press ctrl + alt + del to restart" at the top. I don't believe that GRUB is booting into the wrong partition because I have no Windows recovery partition, just Windows 7. Also when I try and fix the Windows 7 partition with the system recovery disk, it says that the volume is corrupt every time. At this point I have everything backed up on a separate drive so I'm open to try installing Fedora 12 again even if it risks screwing up my Windows 7 partition, I would really just like to have a functioning dual boot.

Letting Ubuntu (or any Linux) attempt to boot into a Live CD without changing any parameters results in a black screen, but with everything else working (for Ubuntu, that means the login sound is played). I've discovered that putting nomodeset in the kernel line will allow me to get so far as a command line, but I can't startx from here (I get "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."). I think my issues have something to do with the dual/switchable graphics in my laptop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to make a clean install of 10.04 instead of just upgrading from Karmic.However when I run the boot cd I get the new Ubuntu boot up screen (with the five dots) but after a while I get a black screen and at the same time the cd stops running in the drive.The only thing I can do is pressing down the start button until my computer shuts down.I do get the menu to choose to run the live cd or make a new installation, but whatever I choose, I end up with the black screen.

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

So I decided to see if the problem persists or not when I completely upgrade my ubuntu to the latest version. So I downloaded the latest ubuntu iso from the site, burned it, and booted from CD and I see several selections to choose from the menu list. The second one was "Install Ubuntu". What I'm worried about is I don't know whether selecting 'Install Ubuntu' will erase all my previous data, or there will be an option to upgrade Ubuntu without erasing all the data. Is it safe to install from the live disk? Will my data be safe? Is there any way to upgrade my Ubuntu on the HD to the latest Ubuntu from a live disk?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter I upgraded F11 to F12 on an x86_64, the new system boots and the daemons come up, then the screen goes black and the computer restarts. But then it won't boot at all. It just keeps restarting.It could be a monitor driver problem. The one time I managed to press "I" fast enough to bring GRUB up, I tried adding "nomodeset". Nothing changed. The monitor is an HP 2009m, so it should not need "nomodeset" anyway. Xfree86.cf has not changed from F11 to F12.
I have a full DVD, so I can bring up Rescue Mode. I had hoped to find clues in (/mnt/sysimage)/var/log/messages, but nothing is being written to it. Once after I rebooted off the hard disk from Rescue Mode, I witnessed a long SElinux conversion. That disquiets me. But disabling SElinux does not solve the problem either.Can anyone suggest some kernel options that might overcome this problem? I shrink from reinstalling F11 from scratch and having to restore all my files from my backup system!P.S. I just found in my personal X11 log a message to the effect that /usr/lib64/dvi/nouveau_dri.so is missing. So it is; the directory has 12 drivers and not this one. If I remember right, "nouveau" often figures in trouble reports.P.P.S. As myself in Rescue Mode I can use xinit to bring X up! But it has only a vanilla text window and no mouse cursor, so I cannot use it or get out of it.

After rebooting, the progress bar goes fine, but when finished the screen flickers a little and goes black. I can't switch to other terminals via Ctrl + Alt + Fx, so I'm using remote access via ssh. I thought it could be nvidia issue, so I updated kmod modules with rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing, and when booting nothing complains, but I'm still getting black screen. Xorg log doesn't seems to complain (no errors (EE)).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my machine to F15. I was asked to reboot. From that point on, the system will not boot. I get to the blue screen with the 'egg', about 1/3 of the 'egg' turns white, then the screen goes black. No cursor, nothing.
I hit shift to get the Grub menu, tried booting my old kernel. Same result.
I tried burning a F15 live cd and booting that, but I get a desktop background with no mouse, no docks. It doesn't seem to respond to anything I do. I can boot it in the "basic graphics" mode, or whatever you call it, but I would rather not overwrite my entire hard drive with a fresh install.
I have seen references to some kind of recovery mode provided on the live cd that might repair my install without wiping my data, but I can't find it anywhere.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI should have know, it's named after a windows "feature".On my laptop (Acer Aspire 5310) Fedora 10 offered me an automatic update to Fedora 11. Because I trust any automatic update Fedora brings to me (it's tested right) I automatically pressed yes. It started some downloads and everything seems to run pretty smooth. Then I had to reboot the computer, press that button as well.... and it reboots into Fedora 10 (untill the end of the bar). After that I have no clue what happens, because before X is started I get a black screen with nothing on it, even ESC doesn't do anything :O I don't even get the "_" to indicate the laptop is doing anything.
