I downloaded a bunch of updates with PackageKit, afterwards I had to restart. Now when I did, all I would get is a blank screen, no blinking prompt line or anything. I did a cold boot and the same thing happened. So, I tried it a third time and all is fine. I'm running FC11 and I'm glad everything is back to normal,but what might have caused this in the first place?

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedTried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.
I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.
i did a preupgrade from fedora 10, i have a new line in grub with the "preupgrade to fedora 11" ... when i choose this.. anaconda run with the normal blue screen running anaconda... but a blacks screen apper with the mouse... the installation not follow and only the black screen with the mouse i can see...some line add to the kernel line of preupgrade fedora 11 to run with another graphical configuration

After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

The computer does not respond to any key input except "ctrl+alt+del", which restarts the computer.The machine is a dell inspiron 6000 with inboard 915gm video card, and the bootloader was written to the harddrive mbr. View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had Windows 7 installed for a few months now and would like to install Fedora 12 on a separate partition. I've tried this three times now, all of them ending with something wrong. The problem that exists for me now is that when I install Fedora 12 and boot up for the first time in GRUB, Fedora 12 works fine. ut when I boot into Windows 7 from GRUB, it just comes up with a black screen and says "BOOTMGR is missing; press ctrl + alt + del to restart" at the top. I don't believe that GRUB is booting into the wrong partition because I have no Windows recovery partition, just Windows 7. Also when I try and fix the Windows 7 partition with the system recovery disk, it says that the volume is corrupt every time. At this point I have everything backed up on a separate drive so I'm open to try installing Fedora 12 again even if it risks screwing up my Windows 7 partition, I would really just like to have a functioning dual boot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo, the problem is that _sometimes_ (I'd say around 5-10% of the time) when booting ubuntu, right after the splash screen (that pulsing white ubuntu logo on a black background), when normally GDM should pop in, I get a black screen and it stays like that and I have to reboot the machine. This is very annoying because I get this behaviour sometimes 3-4 times in a row... Also, sometimes (maybe half of the times when I get that black screen) the HDD LED on my laptop remains lit and the caps lock LED flashes. Right now I'm using a clean install of ubuntu 9.10, but I had the exact same problem with a 9.04 install and a 9.04 to 9.10 upgrade (so I had 9.04, I had the problem, I then upgraded to 9.10, the problem remained, and then I did a fresh install of 9.10 and the problem is still there).
My hardware is a Asus X51RL laptop, with a dual core CPU, 2GB Ram and a ATI X1100 video board. I also could paste a copy of any log you want me to, to help you identify the problem (but it would probably take some time for me to get that black screen, and also I hope that the logs remain saved after I do a hard reboot).
i'm some what new when it comes to using ubuntu. I had an improper shutdown and now when I try to use recovery mode or simply load the first unbuntu option I get an all black screen. can some one help please. I don't know what to do.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm going through this again. I posted this here as well as in the Mint forums because the architecture is very similar. What happens is that when I reboot, the screen goes black at the steps of the boot after about three seconds with each step. So I see the bios enumeration, then the screen goes black; I see the start up sequence with "Linux Mint" and the green/white dots beneath it, then the screen goes black; then finally, I hear (but don't see) the beep when the password login prompt shows. But if I get into the bios (dealing with the screen going black each time) and change it to "load default settings", then it reboots and works fine. Till the next time I boot.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

after a couple of years using Debian derivatives, I decided to try debian 5. Seemed to install okay. Installed Mint afterwards (as debian didnt boot) and debian is visible in the boot menu. Upon selection of debian, I just get a black screen and the monitor gives the message "input not supported". I havent had any such problems with numerous distros over the 2 years.

But then, when I tried to boot for the first time, i saw some messages for the first time, but then I coud see only a black screen (yet the backlight is not turned off). Immediately before the screen turns black, the last printed line is something like "starting gnome...". When I select single-user mode in GRUB, the system (with no window manager) starts well.
I am experiencing a weird problem with my dell latitude laptop. I installed debian amd64 once with gnome and after grub it echoes the following message: Unknown controller version (2). You may experience problems. and after the /dev procedure my screen (16:9) goes black.
After that I tried to reinstalled debian without gnome and I booted to shell. From there I installed manually (apt-get) gnome and started gdm3 and I my screen was ok, but after I did a reboot the same problem happened. Also, when I boot with an external VGA monitor, the vga looks ok but the laptop screen is still black.

EDIT: I just realized another strange thing. If I boot without the vga plugged, I get the usual black screen and If I wait and understand that I am in the login screen and at this time I plug the vga, then miraculously my laptop screen works fine!!! But later on if I close the laptop lid and open it again, then again ... black screen but if I plug the vga it's ok again!
I very frustrated at this point. I have tried to boot OpenSUSE 11.4 from the usb flash drive iso and CD iso. After I restart my computer the boot menu comes up and I click the boot option and the screens loads a bit and then goes black. I have also tried the text installer, but that doesn't work either. I know the problem must be my graphics chip. I have a integrated Intel HD Graphics chip. My laptop is a Gateway NV79. How can I get the graphics to work?

I really am a newby here but I think that the blkid command gives me my uuid. The uuid in the /dev/disk/by-uuid directory is in blue so I'm guessing that this is a symbolic link. And then, when I try to create a symbolic link with the ln command, it already exists... But the issue is that the UUID that is referenced in the error displayed is not the same as the UUID in my /dev/disk/by-uuid directory.
I have had a really bad day (the first, after months of faultless operation)) with my Acer 5720Z laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. First thing was at the second startup today, nothing other than totally black or white screens showed during boot. However, the ubuntu jingle was heard after the normal time it takes to boot, so I was certain it was strictly some video problem.
Ok, so after having thought about this for a while and reading about similar issues here and there on the web I was struck by the fact that not even the Acer screen with bios info etc. showed normally just after power-up. By then I had dragged a second, stationary computer to the livingroom, so I thought I'd check if there'd be video output from the Acer's VGA port. There was, and the ubuntu desktop looking perfectly normal. Aha! - only the backlight working on the Acer's LCD screen, but no video? So I thought I'd check for loose connectors to the LCD or damaged wiring (installed replacement LCD myself some months ago with no problems). This is going to be easy, I thought (being more of a gearhead/hardware type of guy) Turned the Acer laptop off and unscrewed the screen frame stuff. Now I just start it and switch back to internal display... For some reason (too many unclean shutdown(s) during the early "blind" nervous phase of the problem, I suppose) the Acer now hangs with a black screen before boot is complete and I am unable to switch between external/internal monitors. Fortunately I can use the external monitor (video is stuck to the external VGA on startup), get to command prompt etc. so there should be hope. But I have no idea how to sort this out after many unsuccessful attempts. (Recovery mode, disk check etc.)
I can't find any sort of safe graphics mode option in the GRUB menu. Booting from the Ubuntu 9.04 ("live" option) also finally stalls with a black screen and nothing further happening, just like the install that's on the PC.
