Jun 26, 2010trying to install F13 onto an older HP a1610n, which uses an nvidia 6150LE chipset. While booting from the install media, the screen goes completely black. The machine isn't hung, as from the DVD activity LED, it's still dutifully doing its thing, just not letting me see any of it. I'm thinking/hoping some kernel parameters might help, but I can't seem to find out what they would be.

Jul 9, 2009I'm trying to install Fedora 11 on a Dell Latitude c810 (PIII 1ghz, 256mb ram, GeForce2 GO)
When trying to boot from the Live CD it goes to the first fedora boot screen where it counts down from 10 then tries to boot.
It then says "IO Apic resources could not be allocated" then moves onto a fedora loading bar which completes... but the next screen is completely black, I've tried letting it stay there for 10 or so minutes but nothing happens.

Aug 9, 2011After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

Mar 2, 2010I have been using OpenSuse at work for years. My Windows 7 machine crashed on me. Instead of spending the time to fix it, I decided to take the plunge and install 11.2 on my home system. I have 4 one TB drives. My RAID card has a 2x2 1/0 RAID array defined (sdb, sdc, sdc, and sde). A fifth hard drive, outside of the arrary, which is a 250GB drive (sda). It is a software RAID. Here are the partitions I set up in the installer.
On the raid:
1.75 TB on /home
2.01 GB on swap
48.55 GB on /tmp
Off of the raid:
sda1 115 GB /
sda2115 GB /boot
(I know these are really big but I did not want to put any data outside of the RAID) In the final Installation Settings screen, I chose Booting and change from booting from the MBR to the /boot partition. The boot loader type is Grub and the status location is at /dev/sda2. I select Install and it installs without any error message.
After it installs, it restarts and I press ESC to see what is happening. It skips boot.cycle and continues to load to "starting HAL daemon ...done" and then the cursed black screen. I cannot SSH into it. It just sits there and I have to do a hard resest. Once I restart it, it boots into the non-RAD drive I get the follwing error message:
GRUB ..(it went to fast for me to get the rest of it)(hd1/1) message: file not found and I get the option the change the boot options of the Desktop -- openSUSE 11.2 and Failsage -- openSUSE 11.2 . I select e to edit the boot section of desktop and see

I tried changing the root (hd1,1) to 0,1 1,0 2,0, etc with no luck.What do I do? I need to boot into OpenSUSE and finish the cursed installation.

May 27, 2010I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell XPS 630 but every time i select INSTALL or TRY UBUNTU when booting from the cd, all i get is a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I have tried various options in the F6 menu but nothing has worked. I know the CD is working because I was able to install it inside Windows and dual boot, but I wish to do a fresh install.

Sep 13, 2010I'm so desperate about my problems with installing ubuntu. I got a Fujitsu Siemens Computer AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.01 GHz and 1,50 gb RAM. I got Windows XP home edition on my computer, but i wanna completely switch to ubuntu.
At first I tried to install it with wubi, but it won't work always the same problem.
Then I tried it with the Live CD and tried demo and not install, but it fails. First there is a purple screen with a keyboard and a little guy in a circle, then there's a _ in a black screen blinking, and after that my monitor goes into standby mode. The CD is still loaded from the harddrive, but nothing happens. It feels like the Screen froze down and I can't see anything, what's going on.
I tried it with just installing, alternate install, but it's everytime the same problem.

Problem: Can not install OpenSUSE 11.3. Boot from the disc - the installation screen resolutions, modes of installation - everything is in order. But when the installation can proceed - loading (logo) and just a black screen - possibly the installation goes - but no picture. Also try to set mode "vesa" - loading equipment "ok" ... "ok" ... "ok" ... "ok" ... and again in the black screen.

Jan 12, 2010I burned a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 and decided to use it to build up my little server. All was well initially. The CD booted, the language selection came up (I selected English), then there was the option to Try, Install, boot from first hard-drive, etc. I chose install and figured I'd nuke the original drive since everything that I need is off there. The little Ubuntu logo came up (it was shining/pulsating) for about 5 minutes. This went on for some time (the DVD-ROM spinning the entire time furiously) and then..The screen went black and there was a message saying that there was no input to the monitor (as some monitors are prone to do if you unplug/loosen the cable.) I rebooted, burned new CDs, etc. To no avail!

My goal would be to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this machine. When I try the live CD, screen just goes black, after a while it plays what I assume to be the welcome music. If I try the conventional install screen is just black. The safe graphic mode yielded two grey _, one in the 1/5 and one in the 4/5 of the screen.

Apr 30, 2010I want to make a clean install of 10.04 instead of just upgrading from Karmic.However when I run the boot cd I get the new Ubuntu boot up screen (with the five dots) but after a while I get a black screen and at the same time the cd stops running in the drive.The only thing I can do is pressing down the start button until my computer shuts down.I do get the menu to choose to run the live cd or make a new installation, but whatever I choose, I end up with the black screen.
I'm trying to install on an older IBM Thinkpad R50e, with 500 mb RAM so I figured that it was simply just too old to run the new ubuntu. The strange thing however is that the cd is actually running fine from within my Virtual Machine. This I don't get

When I try to boot or install from it, the screen shows the "ubuntu" with the red dots for a minute and then a black screen with no action from the hard drive or the CD drive. I think it should be asking what language I want but presing enter does nothing.I have been using Ubuntu since 2006 and after yesterday's repartition I installed 6.06 from a live CD so I know I can install from a CD.

Mar 17, 2011I recently decided to give Ubuntu another try after a break for a while, and have hit a bit of a road block The live CD booted fine, ran, installed, all flawlessly, so it's now a dual boot with Windows 7. Only issue now is when trying to load the HDD installed Ubuntu, it just hangs on a black screen, no HDD activity light or anything. First up my specs code...
Next, what happens in detail:
Machine posts, loads boot loader with OS options. Whether choose Ubuntu or recovery Ubuntu, it always hangs on black screen straight after that.
Next, what I have tried to fix it so far:
Tried pressing 'e' and replacing the quiet splash with nomodeset, same result with both normal flavour and recovery.
Tried copying the xorg.conf from the live CD filesystem to X11 folder on main system drive. Also tried editing it to try and use generic vesa driver.

Mar 17, 2011I am trying to do a dual boot of XP and ubuntu. I have 3 hard drives and I plan to put ubuntu on one of them. I have created a DVD from the ISO for 10.10 using programs and methods recommended by ubuntu, and it burned correctly onto the DVD. When I boot with the dvd in the tray the computer says something about linux iso then the screen goes black with a Human=Keyboard symbol at the bottom for a few seconds. Then my screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen. I have let it sit for a while and the PC shows no signs of drives working.Also if I remove it the PC automatically boots to windows.

Feb 8, 2009I am running Fedora 10 on a Gateway Machine. I tried to install the corresponding drivers for acceleration but it seems to have broken the display. After the loading splash screen, the screen goes black and does not respond to anything. I did manage to see the Grub boot loader by pressing 3 a number of times while booting the machine. Any ideas for how to revert the computer to its normal display so i can try again at getting these drivers working. It is a tad bit annoying not having a display but hell, this distro is already as far as I can see 10x as good as Ubuntu.

Sep 15, 2010After I upgraded F11 to F12 on an x86_64, the new system boots and the daemons come up, then the screen goes black and the computer restarts. But then it won't boot at all. It just keeps restarting.It could be a monitor driver problem. The one time I managed to press "I" fast enough to bring GRUB up, I tried adding "nomodeset". Nothing changed. The monitor is an HP 2009m, so it should not need "nomodeset" anyway. Xfree86.cf has not changed from F11 to F12.
I have a full DVD, so I can bring up Rescue Mode. I had hoped to find clues in (/mnt/sysimage)/var/log/messages, but nothing is being written to it. Once after I rebooted off the hard disk from Rescue Mode, I witnessed a long SElinux conversion. That disquiets me. But disabling SElinux does not solve the problem either.Can anyone suggest some kernel options that might overcome this problem? I shrink from reinstalling F11 from scratch and having to restore all my files from my backup system!P.S. I just found in my personal X11 log a message to the effect that /usr/lib64/dvi/nouveau_dri.so is missing. So it is; the directory has 12 drivers and not this one. If I remember right, "nouveau" often figures in trouble reports.P.P.S. As myself in Rescue Mode I can use xinit to bring X up! But it has only a vanilla text window and no mouse cursor, so I cannot use it or get out of it.

Feb 23, 2016I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:
Holding shift on startup - Nothing
Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.
I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.

Feb 8, 2010I've been using Ubuntu for about a year or so and have never had any problems installing it up until now.
I can boot from live CD for 9.10, but if at any point I attempt to install it to my hardrive, it either locks up or the screen goes black. Sometimes I'm able to start the installer, but the screen will go blank. The most progress I've been able to make on the install was up to 98% before it locked up, every other time I've gotten a blank screen or a lock up around 40-60%. After a hard reboot I get an error that reads "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
This problem doesn't only occur with 9.10, but with every other linux distro I've tried on it. My first attempt was with Ubuntu Studio, but I got similar errors. I've searched literally for hours and have found nary a solution that even comes close to solving my problem. using HP Pavilion a404x desktop
