Debian :: Security Contrib Is Non-free?
May 17, 2010Should I have "contrib non-free" at the end of the security mirrors? And what will this do if I don't have it at the end?

View 4 RepliesI was told that I should edit my current Debian source.list file and modify the default list to say "contrib non-free" at the end of each line and I was wondering what exactly is the difference? I checked their (Debian) Wiki site and it didn't list an explanation. Can someone here help me understand? It's been a while since I used a Debian server and I would like to understand what the difference is. I do remember that Debian had a very strict and religious view on OSS and perhaps this has something to do with that view developers have.

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 Update DVD 20090907: i386 DVD 1]/ lenny contrib main non-free
but I want to use EXACTLY the same from internet - for the same version.
Also what mean non-free, contrib, main and other parameters?
During playing around sources, synaptic playing I messed up the default list. I know I should have been more careful. Anyways could someone tell me what the default the default sources.list that has free and non free etc for squueze please? I have been trying to get the default list but I cannot find it anywhere. There are alot of lists out there but nothing tagged like the "default" list.

a cup of days I'm trying to find any working free VPN service. Without success. All tutorials I read are old and nothing works.

For example, the loss of a single unencrypted laptop may have huge repercussions. This could include breaching data protection legislation with the risk of a significant fine, a loss in the confidence of an organisation, as well as the risk that sensitive data may fall into the hands of a competitor or third party with malicious intent.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded AVG Free Edition as protection after I accidentally visited a drive-by-download site (which was most likely trying to download a windows virus, I don't quite know what the file extension was on the file it tried to make me download 'cause I got out of that trap faster than a bat out of He...Well you get the picture), and it does not seem that the .deb package directly from the AVG Free Linux download page fully installs. Synaptic acknowledges the package's existence, yet there are no shortcuts on the Desktop or on the system menu. I followed the link to AVG from this Ubuntu. So, perhaps, someone at AVG has some explaining to do on why their free for Linux doesn't seem to work. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

Am I asking too much for a FREE OS? Everybody spend their precious time to help others, that's very helpful. But it seems like there is no support from UBUNTU team, how could we even get through the barrier of not using Microsoft's OSes? No free lunch of course, but it seems to me some issues have never really been solved.I read lot's of people have problem with their WIFI, not just for my OLD USB wifi adapter. I don't have problem with WIFI in XP/Server.
I posted here and there, and seems like no answer, and I do not get any reply from UBUNTU support team, forgive me if I run out of google's keywords.I just need a simple answer, is my WIFI going to work in UBUNTU with a layman effort? I like linux and UBUNTU had put great effort in providing me such a great OS, but if a basic internet connection will need to spent sooo much time to setup, and it still doesn't work. IS IT WORTH to switch to UBUNTU at all
Sun ultra 5 (sparc64) Was working previously with Lenny, installed from 5.07 netinstall CD. Tried to do a fresh install with the stock 6.0 netinstall sparc64 CD. It couldn't find my CD drive. It suggested that I install drivers from a removable media, which I suppose I could try.
I suspect that the issue is the firmware, and I'd like to try a CD with non-free firmware included to check this, as it seems the easiest. However, I am unable to find a "non-free" install CD for the sparc64 architecture. I can find x86, amd64, ppc, but no sparc64. I've done searches, looked though links on these forums, etc.
Does anyone know where I could find a "non-free" firmware included install CD for sparc64?

View 15 Replies View RelatedI installed Squeeze on a server today, and struggled a bit because the network card needed non-free firmware (Broadcom something). The server had no floppy, so I had to go and get a pen drive and put firmware from non-free on it to get it to work.
I agree on the political issues on this, but sometimes it's non-free or nothing.
So I was wondering if someone know of a patched netinstall, or know how to make one? Then I could give the pen drive away to something more useful that keeping non-free firmware. Warnings and questions about the non-free would also be nice.
I was wondering is it posible to list all software installed from non-free and/or contrib repository?

i have successfully set up squid3 with squeeze using guide on this forum viewtopic.php?f=16&t=59301 . The only problem that i have is the size of /var/log/access.log is too big and keep increasing so i run out of free space. The size of it always the same size as my free space hard disk (so it make me run out of free space in just one day, it can have size to 30 Gb ) right now , the only workaround i make is using crontab to rm access.log every hour . I'm sure this is not the right solution . Does anybody know the correct workaround about this ? I have searching in google but seems havent yet have luck with this .
