Ubuntu :: Install Latest Java Version - Java SE 6 Update 24?

Feb 18, 2011

If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.

Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

Programming :: Is Java Free For Use For Business Purpose

Dec 28, 2010

I learned Java(SE,EE) few years ago and didn't use it because we are using PHP and ASP.NET at work. However, I would like to ask a question: Is Java (SE,EE) free for use for business purpose?I mean,if I start up a company and use tomcat with java, do I have to pay for the license to use Java?I don't know much about java license until I learned that ASF(Apache Software Foundation) quited from the Java Community recently. As a result, they recalled my attention regarding the legitimacy of using java in business purpose for free.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Error: Not Enough Free Disk Space

Sep 1, 2011

I am a beginner to Ubuntu & Linux. Some months back I installed ubuntu on a somewhat aged & slowed down acer laptop running win XP. Finally I tried running ubuntu a couple days ago & it's been pretty smooth, until this from update manager: Not enough free disk space

The upgrade needs a total of 615M free space on disk '/'. Please free at least an additional 296M of disk space on '/'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. I guess I don't have to install these "important security updates", but it's probably best I do & learn how to use the file browser, terminal (Applications - Accessories - really, it's a little hidden), other important parts of ubuntu.

For downloading I have an external drive connected with 760 GB free - more than enough space for anything. I can also move files to this disk - do I maybe need to reboot into win xp to move files? I have no idea how to know which ubuntu files to remove for space - proc folder seems to have enough room, but should I just move it to the external drive? I can't seem to access the rest of the hard Drive where I could simply move a 4GB movie.

Ubuntu Installation :: Java Runtime Version 6 Update 25?

Apr 29, 2011

I downloaded Java into my home folder instead of downloading it in my usr folder because it wouldn't let me(even when I was root user). It is present in my home folder with its own directory, but I am unsure how to use it. I downloaded Java to try to play Minecraft, but when I open then .jar file with the directory nothing happens. The actual directory contains the following

folders:bin, javaws, lib, man, plugin, copyright, licens e,a read me file, thirdpartylicensereadme, and a welcome.html file. I don't like running Minecraft with OpenJDK because it lags tremendously and it won't close, and I heard the "real Java" runs it much better.Did I download it incorrectly, if so can you tell me how?

My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

Debian :: Adding Contrib Is Non-Free?

Oct 17, 2010

I was told that I should edit my current Debian source.list file and modify the default list to say "contrib non-free" at the end of each line and I was wondering what exactly is the difference? I checked their (Debian) Wiki site and it didn't list an explanation. Can someone here help me understand? It's been a while since I used a Debian server and I would like to understand what the difference is. I do remember that Debian had a very strict and religious view on OSS and perhaps this has something to do with that view developers have.
