Ubuntu :: Install Latest Java Version - Java SE 6 Update 24?
Feb 18, 2011If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.
Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

Anyways could someone tell me what the default the default sources.list that has free and non free etc for squueze please? I have been trying to get the default list but I cannot find it anywhere. There are alot of lists out there but nothing tagged like the "default" list.

Feb 18, 2011This is my first post and I'm pretty new on Debian. I had used Ubunu for a while now and I've decided to move on Debian Squeeze.But I've one problem: I've a Java programm to install and the installer is GUI Java based. When I run the script, I've the next message:
Preparing to install. Extracting the JRE from the installer archive.Unpacking the JRE.Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive.Configuring the installer for this system's environment.Launching installer Graphical installers are not supported by the VM. The console mode will be used instead. Preparing CONSOLE Mode Installation. But this program is not able to run the installation in console mode.
I've tried to install sun-java6-jre but without success.Has anyone an idea to help me install this programm? My Configuration: Debian Squeeze 6.0 amd64.

Why the packages require free space on /boot. How to empty trash. How to remove temporary packages of former installations using sudo apt-get clean.

Sep 1, 2011I am a beginner to Ubuntu & Linux. Some months back I installed ubuntu on a somewhat aged & slowed down acer laptop running win XP. Finally I tried running ubuntu a couple days ago & it's been pretty smooth, until this from update manager: Not enough free disk space
The upgrade needs a total of 615M free space on disk '/'. Please free at least an additional 296M of disk space on '/'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. I guess I don't have to install these "important security updates", but it's probably best I do & learn how to use the file browser, terminal (Applications - Accessories - really, it's a little hidden), other important parts of ubuntu.
For downloading I have an external drive connected with 760 GB free - more than enough space for anything. I can also move files to this disk - do I maybe need to reboot into win xp to move files? I have no idea how to know which ubuntu files to remove for space - proc folder seems to have enough room, but should I just move it to the external drive? I can't seem to access the rest of the hard Drive where I could simply move a 4GB movie.

Feb 9, 2010from the links I have read it seems like you have to manually download the lastest sun java from sun.com and then excute some commands to get firefox to use sun java rather than openjdk.It seems stupid having to update sun java manually. so is there a repo for it so i can update sun java with yum like all other programs?

I have the IceTea add-on installed, but still unable to run java scripts while in Mozilla Firefox 5.0. Prior to the update I was able to run java apps and scripts. I downloaded the lastest JRE 1.6.0_26 and installed it from the terminal emulator using an RPM package. May 18, 2011I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

I checked their (Debian) Wiki site and it didn't list an explanation. Can someone here help me understand? It's been a while since I used a Debian server and I would like to understand what the difference is. I do remember that Debian had a very strict and religious view on OSS and perhaps this has something to do with that view developers have.
