Debian :: Adding Contrib Is Non-Free?
Oct 17, 2010
I was told that I should edit my current Debian source.list file and modify the default list to say "contrib non-free" at the end of each line and I was wondering what exactly is the difference? I checked their (Debian) Wiki site and it didn't list an explanation. Can someone here help me understand? It's been a while since I used a Debian server and I would like to understand what the difference is. I do remember that Debian had a very strict and religious view on OSS and perhaps this has something to do with that view developers have.

Should I have "contrib non-free" at the end of the security mirrors? And what will this do if I don't have it at the end?

Is there some catalog or something to distinguish and choose sources for sources.list file in Debian? Currently mine are
Code:
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 20090905-08:48]/ lenny contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-2 20090905-08:48]/ lenny contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-3 20090905-08:48]/ lenny contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-4 20090905-08:48]/ lenny contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-5 20090905-08:48]/ lenny contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 Update DVD 20090907: i386 DVD 1]/ lenny contrib main non-free
but I want to use EXACTLY the same from internet - for the same version.
Also what mean non-free, contrib, main and other parameters?

New install from downloaded DVD. sound played after install. Installed rhymbox, which tried to install the various nonfree packages. I didn't have the keys installed so it failed miserably. From various websites I've used yum to install nonfree packages to support mp3. I now have both movieplayer and rhymbox which have no sound. Even more strangely, rhymbox 'slider' which follows the playtime remaining, simply doesn't move? Tried remove/re-install rhymbox to no avail.

I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

Am I asking too much for a FREE OS? Everybody spend their precious time to help others, that's very helpful. But it seems like there is no support from UBUNTU team, how could we even get through the barrier of not using Microsoft's OSes? No free lunch of course, but it seems to me some issues have never really been solved.I read lot's of people have problem with their WIFI, not just for my OLD USB wifi adapter. I don't have problem with WIFI in XP/Server.
I posted here and there, and seems like no answer, and I do not get any reply from UBUNTU support team, forgive me if I run out of google's keywords.I just need a simple answer, is my WIFI going to work in UBUNTU with a layman effort? I like linux and UBUNTU had put great effort in providing me such a great OS, but if a basic internet connection will need to spent sooo much time to setup, and it still doesn't work. IS IT WORTH to switch to UBUNTU at all

Sun ultra 5 (sparc64) Was working previously with Lenny, installed from 5.07 netinstall CD. Tried to do a fresh install with the stock 6.0 netinstall sparc64 CD. It couldn't find my CD drive. It suggested that I install drivers from a removable media, which I suppose I could try.
I suspect that the issue is the firmware, and I'd like to try a CD with non-free firmware included to check this, as it seems the easiest. However, I am unable to find a "non-free" install CD for the sparc64 architecture. I can find x86, amd64, ppc, but no sparc64. I've done searches, looked though links on these forums, etc.
Does anyone know where I could find a "non-free" firmware included install CD for sparc64?

I installed Squeeze on a server today, and struggled a bit because the network card needed non-free firmware (Broadcom something). The server had no floppy, so I had to go and get a pen drive and put firmware from non-free on it to get it to work.
I agree on the political issues on this, but sometimes it's non-free or nothing.
So I was wondering if someone know of a patched netinstall, or know how to make one? Then I could give the pen drive away to something more useful that keeping non-free firmware. Warnings and questions about the non-free would also be nice.

After my last package upgrade (Under Testing/Sid), gdm refuse to starts and immediately gives the Gnome message :
Oh no! Something has gone wrong. GNOME-shell
This error appears before I can choose this account to login. GDM or Xorg doesn't give any useful log.
After uninstalling nvidia non-free drivers, I'm now able to boot with nouveau.
Any way for having non-free drivers working again?

i have successfully set up squid3 with squeeze using guide on this forum viewtopic.php?f=16&t=59301 . The only problem that i have is the size of /var/log/access.log is too big and keep increasing so i run out of free space. The size of it always the same size as my free space hard disk (so it make me run out of free space in just one day, it can have size to 30 Gb ) right now , the only workaround i make is using crontab to rm access.log every hour . I'm sure this is not the right solution . Does anybody know the correct workaround about this ? I have searching in google but seems havent yet have luck with this .

I have a problem when i use the Nvidia driver and the latest version of Xorg (1.9.4) on Debian Sid. In fact, when i minimise a window (Nautilus, console or Chromium/Iceweasel), i see the window's black border and it's very slowly when i minimize or maximize it. I don't know how to explain correctly so i tried to take a screenshot :
In this screenshot, you can see the black border. I haven't this problem if i use the free driver for my Nvidia but i can't to play with wine I tried with the driver on experimental repositories or the driver on Nvidia Website.

How do I need to change the source-code, not to recieve a message from debugger?

I will preface this post by stating I am a beginner in Linux in general. I am trying to add a 4TB hard drive to my LVM set up. I started by partitioning the disk using fdisk. After that I went to add the disk as a physical volume. When I ran pvdisplay I noticed that the disk was only showing as 2 TB.
After some research it appears that anything over 2 TB isn't supported by fdisk. Instead I need to use "parted" or "gdisk" . So I used the following command "sudo gdisk /dev/sda" and recieved this,
Partition table scan:
MBR: MBR only
BSD: not present
APM: not present
GPT: not present
Found invalid GPT and valid MBR; converting MBR to GPT format. THIS OPERATION IS POTENTIALLY DESTRUCTIVE! Exit by typing 'q' if you don't want to convert your MBR partitions to GPT format!
I was about to pull the trigger and enter "w" when I saw the message "THIS WILL OVERWRITE EXISTING PARTITIONS" which scared me away.
So does this message only refer to the previous partition I had created on /dev/sda? Or is it all partitions?
