View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded AVG Free Edition as protection after I accidentally visited a drive-by-download site (which was most likely trying to download a windows virus, I don't quite know what the file extension was on the file it tried to make me download 'cause I got out of that trap faster than a bat out of He...Well you get the picture), and it does not seem that the .deb package directly from the AVG Free Linux download page fully installs. Synaptic acknowledges the package's existence, yet there are no shortcuts on the Desktop or on the system menu. I followed the link to AVG from this Ubuntu.So, perhaps, someone at AVG has some explaining to do on why their free for Linux doesn't seem to work. View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit Ubuntu with a wired nic card connected straight to the cable modem. When I try going to Free Internet Radio - SHOUTcast Radio - Thousands of Free Online Radio Stations I get an error message that it is unable to connect. I tried it with Firefox 3.6.11 and Opera 10.06 and neither one will make a connection to Shoutcast web page.
I don't have it blocked with iptables and I don't think the Ad Block plug-in is a factor as Opera won't connect either. But if I try it with IE in XP running in VirtualBox on the same Ubuntu system it will connect to the web page! Is it something with my Ubuntu system or is Shoutcast blocking access to Linux users?

View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to keep any flash video from anywhere on the internet for free.no i'm not a robot, and i don't want your credit card info, nor do i wish to tell you how to make your (expletive deleted) bigger. it's just something i stumbled on and i wanted to share it.you can keep any flash video on the internet if you're using google chrome. it's really simple. just browse on over to any video you like, it could be videos, or a porn site, whatever. watch it. or don't. i don't care. just keep it going in the back ground until it is fully loaded. next, go to your home directory using your favorite file manager. you may have to turn on "show hidden files" different fms do it differently, consult your documentation. at any rate you're looking for ".cache" this applies to kde, gnome, it doesn't matter. in ".cache" you'll find "google-chrome" inside you'll find a whole bunch of files. you're looking for flash video filetypes so either a "list view" or "details" or something along those lines would be your best bet to find it more quickly. none of the cache files in here have "human names" like video.flv for example, there all along the lines of f_007x so finding your particular one isn't exactly easy, but it's not hard. file sizes are your best clue here. of course, if the video is still loading it's easier because you're looking for a flash video that seems to keep growing in file size. once you found the one you want to keep just copy it to a permanent location like ~/videos or something like that and give it a better name. or not. it's up to you. anyway, i hope you find this tip useful. oh and don't worry about what distro your using, it doesn't seem to matter. i've tried this trick on slackware, ubuntu, and opensuse.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

FICS, Free Internet Chess Server, I have been trying all day to achieve this in one way or another, so far no joy. All I want is a simple way so my frien and I can play chess over the net. So I looked at php scripts. Nothing suitable, that I could find. I'd like a nice web interface. My thought figure out how to "talk" to gnuchess or whatever an write some php to talk to it. Xboard, html style. (Is there one?) Or run my own private chess server.

Now i tried to install CENT OS by formatting ubuntu. I inserted CENT OS DVD and restarted and i selected to delete my /dev/sda2 which is showing 20480mb and it shown me free space. but i tried to add partion /boot of 100mb it got added. but, when i am trying to add / of 3000mb in the remaining 20380mb free space it showing an error message that no free space is available.

I am running UFW, which is set to deny everything but SSH on port 22, OpenVPN on port 1194 and HTTPS on port 443. SSH is set to only allow private key logins, and the root account is disabled. I have AppArmor running for all of my daemons (OpenVPN, Apache2, OpenSSH) and I have Fail2Ban running.
Is there anything else I can do to secure my server from the Internet (it is directly connected, there is no NAT between the Internet and my server).
Today I noticed my Desktop was being controlled remotely from over the Internet even though I had it set for 'local network only'. Foolishly I relied on this setting and hadn't specified a password or other security. The remote user had opened my Firefox passwords page and was perusing this when I pulled the plug.
All external checks confirmed that my router/firewall is actively blocking correctly. How could this happen? How can I prevent this in the future? I had recently install the Firefox extension for Weave Sync and wonder if that had anything to do with it?
I administer a desktop computer with ubuntu 8.04 in an university library. Since it works almost all night, to enable students to study, after some time I noticed some misuses of the computer during the evening, when there isn't many students. My goal was to disable users from accessing internet from 7pm to 7am, but also enable it if certain user was logged in (I use that user for torrent, and I seed on that computers from time to time). So I created a script that's being called by root's crontab, and here is the script's code:
