Ubuntu :: Using Wget With Timestamping
Feb 23, 2011I'm currently using wget to keep a running mirror of another site but I don't have much space locally. I was wondering if there was a way to turn on -N (timestamping) so that only the "updates" were retrieved (i.e. new/modified files) without hosting a local mirror.
Does -N take a timestamp parameter that will pull any new/modified files after "x"?
It seems like a waste to compare remote file headers against a timestamp without presenting the option of supplying that timestamp. Supplying a timestamp would allow me to not keep a local mirror and still pull updates that occurred after the desired timestamp.
Ubuntu Security :: Decrypting Document Encrypted On Smartphone?
Feb 26, 2010I'm an absolute beginner at encryption. gpg and keys still have me somewhat mystified, so please forgive me if the following seems like a stupid question. I'm looking at encryption software for my smartphone. I've found a Java program called TinyEncryptor that uses the TwoFish algorithm and claims to be a shell for the "Legion of the Bouncy Castle" libraries. It just uses a passphrase; there are no keys involved as far as I am aware.
Naturally, I would like to be able to decrypt files on my desktop that I've encrypted with this program. So far, I've not had any success with finding one.

Jul 30, 2009I am trying to get apache to start at boot in Fedora 10 but I am getting "Document root must be a directory", I tried to change the Selinux settings with:
chcon -R -h -t httpd_sys_content_t /www
I checked the new settings with ls -aZ and the changes apear to be fine.
apache apache unconfined_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0
But I still get the same message on my boot.log file.

Apr 28, 2010I am trying to use my external hard drive to store webpages and on the webpages it is uploaded to the folder. When i navigate to the address it says it is forbidden. I also noticed that it would not let me upload files to the folder it says i do not have permission. Can someone help me get passed the barriers. The hard drive is ntfs.

Feb 9, 2011I'm trying to replace an office file server. I would like to avoid just another samba share.
I'm looking for a document repository, a bit more functionality than a plain samba share and very cross-platform.
I've looked a couple minutes at dspace, but that seems like a lot of work just configuring it. Dropbox would be fine except that they only have up to 100g, and it's off-site.
This is NOT for unauthenticated public use.
Here are some features I have in mind:
1. Web front end.
2. Any file format from a one-line text document to a Microsoft Word document to an ISO of a blu-ray disk to a very large database backup, binary or text.
3. Cross-platform clients, mostly Mac.
4. Authenticated via centralized one-login server or maybe by a key such as an SSH public key.
5. Searchable by terms, name or content if the type is appropriate.
6. Pass in the URL for an object and have the server download it.
7. Stores files in native format so if the app breaks I can just get the files.

Apr 26, 2010I downloaded AVG Free Edition as protection after I accidentally visited a drive-by-download site (which was most likely trying to download a windows virus, I don't quite know what the file extension was on the file it tried to make me download 'cause I got out of that trap faster than a bat out of He...Well you get the picture), and it does not seem that the .deb package directly from the AVG Free Linux download page fully installs. Synaptic acknowledges the package's existence, yet there are no shortcuts on the Desktop or on the system menu. I followed the link to AVG from this Ubuntu.So, perhaps, someone at AVG has some explaining to do on why their free for Linux doesn't seem to work. Feb 15, 2010I screwed up with my Ubuntu Server Grub2 on 9.10. I want to know since I just did a reinstall on top of the old one. Can I eliminate one of them (doesn't matter) and return it to Ubuntu and 7. Now grub shows the new install, win 7 and the old ubuntu's that I had before and they all 3 work. so how can I restore grub in the old ones to a default setting and then eliminate the new one? or just eliminate the old ones? Or should I do what I think is prob what I will have to do and completely reinstall Windows and then put Ubuntu back on?

Jun 24, 2011I have an Ubuntu Server, a dyndns account and an account with [URL]. My DynDns stuff is all working just great - novo.dyndns.tv is the address. Now I need a domain which I have already bought, to be linked to that machine at [URL] I signed up with freedns.afraid.org and now I am a bit confused at what records to add where. I added a domain - [URL] then setup a webforward as follows: redirect from [URL] and redirect from[URL] to [URL] , however if you go and visit:[URL] you will see my problem! It takes you back to [URL] server and says there is not a webforward setup for [URL]This tells us that the nameservers are all setup fine - and its something in my freedns config which is failing.

But when I visit http:/localhost ，it shows up the list of files in <var/www/html> as if a ftp server browsed in web page. So how can I set http://localhost load my default web page index.html ?Second :I want to set up a web server on Internet through my router . I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation

May 18, 2011I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

Ubuntu Servers :: Server Load On Clean Install And "free -m" Results
Mar 31, 2011Recently I've gotten myself a VPS and tried to begin small - 512 MB Memory, 10gb HD.
Ubuntu 10.04 got installed on it and decided to make a user for myself besides root, installed a lamp enviroment and let that extra user own /var/www, since im the only one developing on the vps.
Then I ran the free -m command... shockingly it had 450 mb in use, and around 40-60 mb free (varieing around a bit).
Is this normal? If so - why are company's selling vps'es with 256 mb ram... thats just ... not logical ;x
Ran the free -m command again after letting it idle for about 5 mins. Same results.
the 'top' command tells me that the cpu is boring itself with around 1% use.. not a suprise with only lamp on it and 0 visitors yet =P
So ... why does ubuntu take up nearly all my precious memory? should I upgrade to 1 GB of memory to be completely safe I dont run out of resources or is something else going on here?
Discovered I was miss-reading the free -m command. To avoid confusion in the future I install htop, which is configurable to show a... nicer view of what's being used by what. Turns out I was using 50 mb.. >.>
