Debian :: Ome Peculiar Messages That Occur When Booting Machine Up?

Mar 1, 2011

Looking through syslog, I see some peculiar messages that occur when booting my Debian machine up. Can anyone explain to me, why it seams to think my filesystem is read only, and what do the other messages mean? Is there anything I need to start worrying about?

Feb 26 08:48:21 chris-desktop kernel: [ 4.082355] EXT3-fs (sdb3): recovery required on readonly filesystem
Feb 26 08:48:21 chris-desktop kernel: [ 4.082361] EXT3-fs (sdb3): write access will be enabled during recovery

General :: Pipe Kernel Messages To Another Process As They Occur

Apr 13, 2011

I have an OLED screen on my laptop that I have configured to show status information. The current driver I have installed in Linux for it is able to display messages by sending them to a script as an argument separated by spaces.Example: the command /opt/asusg50oled/utils/notify.sh Hi Everybody "Hello World" displays on the oled screen:

Hi
Everybody
Hello World

If another message is sent before the old ones disappear and it reverts to status info, it pushes off the top message. Example: less than 30 seconds after the previous example, /opt/asusg50oled/utils/notify.sh "Bananas have potassium" is executed:

Everybody
Hello World
Bananas have potassium

What I want to do is have kernel messages (the kind you see by running dmesg) forwarded to this script. For example, when I insert a USB drive, the following information would show on the OLED screen as they're logged:........

Software :: Error Messages When Booting Into Ubuntu?

Jun 20, 2011

I'm not sure when this occurred, but it happened either when I was trying to install the new gnome-shell, or after installing kbuntu. In any event, when I try to boot Ubuntu 10.04, I get the login screen where I enter my username/password. After doing so, I get the following error messages (in this order). I should note that add the login screen, I have the option boot gnome, kde, failsafe gnome, etc. I tried all the options with the same result:

"Cannot open consolekit session: unable to open session: failed to execute to program /lib/dbus-daemon-launch-helper:success"

"Cannot enter home directory. Using /"

"Could not duplicate ICEauthority file/.Iceauthority."

OpenSUSE Install :: Peculiar Boot Options Screen?

Dec 4, 2009

I use Suse Linux 11.1 on a VMware Workstation 6.5.3, and I've run into the following strange behavior: occasionally (happened two-three times in the last several days), I get instead of the usual boot options screen, which is of green color, a screen with the same content but which is predominantly blue; in fact it contains a sort of snowscape with a penguin walking across it. So far I haven't noticed anything wrong with my machine; but I'm curious if anybody else has noticed it. Could it be some malware

Fedora :: Vtual Machine Not Booting?

Jun 25, 2010

I am starting this as I am getting bit desperate. I have installed Windows XP virtual machine. As it created partition, formatted it, and copied files it started to reboot and i got message A disk read error occurred press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart I tried also boot from CD, but I got Booting from CD-ROM... Boot failed, could not read from CDROM (Code001). It seems that it is not even spinning the CD. I have also noticed that there is no CD/DVD drive listed in virtual machine details. Although, there is boot option to select CD as a device to boot from. There are probably two separate issues, booting from HDD and not detecting CDROM. However I installed the same virtual machine on Fedora 12 without any problems and just cannot solve this

Hardware :: Machine Not Booting Without Old Hard Drive

Jan 22, 2010

I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?

Fedora :: How To Switch To Dual Booting On Main Machine

Nov 18, 2010

I'd like to switch to dual booting on my main machine. However, I'm like, a really serious competitive gamer. I play in leagues, go to LANs and performance is my greatest concern here. If I dual boot Fedora & Windows, will I have any performance issues with Windows, while booting in Windows, if I have Fedora on the same hard drive?

I don't think there should be any issues but I would like some clarification or nformation on it. Searching for 'gaming' with Linux isn't very information when it comes to dual booting, so I was just wondering.

TL;DR: Will dual booting Windows & Fedora cause any CPU/GPU/LAG/performance issues while I boot into windows and play a game (Source, TF2, Unreal Engine Games...etc)?

General :: At What Point Does Wireless Connection Occur

Mar 3, 2010

I have just purchased my first Linux PC - up to now I have always rolled my own so to speak. It is a little Dell Latitude 2100 which I got a good deal on through the outlet store - a refurb but it looks new. Ubuntu 9.04. It has built in wireless and I have gotten it to talk to my D-Link router although only with WEP and not yet WPA - that will come later.

When is the wireless connection supposed to occur? If I reboot the PC and watch for it to connect (using ping from another machine on the network) it does not appear until I login to it. It remains on the network after I logout(?) Is this normal? I am used to hard wired machines which come up on the network before a user logs in. Is there something I need to change in the network connection settings?
