Programming :: Logging Messages From Program Doesn't Reach /var/log/messages?

I have a syslog-ng running and kernel build of 2.6.34.8 I use a syslog API in my program with facility LOG_LOCAL5 and and levels debug err and crit and info. when I ran on the older syslog facility I had everything logged fine as I intended. now I have written these rules into the syslog-ng.conf:
options {
flush_lines (0);
time_reopen (10);
log_fifo_size (1000);
[code]....
the last two rules show my program gnssapp. the result is all debug levels or crit or err levels I don't see any of them !

The next problem I faced is that the Jabber-client sends messages but the recipients do not receive them.The server is Openfire 3.7.0. And our users use it without any problems.One user has Kubuntu 10.10. Pidgin 1:2.7.3-1ubuntu3.2. The connection passes well. The contact list loads well. The incoming messages are received well.But the messages which are sent to others - do not reach them.His Jabber-client is configured as others'. I tried Pidgin 1:2.7.3-1ubuntu3.2 (which is used in our company) and Gajim 0.13.4-1ubuntu1 .What can it be? And what should I do?I compared the openssl version on my computer and on problem computer. I have 0.9.8o-1ubuntu4.4. He had just 4. I upgraded his system. Now he has also 4.4. But the problem is still with us.

I'm using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5. In this whenever a user process crashes due to segmentaion faults , it was not logged in /var/log/messages. Even dmesg is also not showing any messages related to this.
Where as in another distributions(Cent OS 5) I've seen segfaults messages in /var/log/messages whenever my user process crashed.dmesg also showing the segfaults.
Is there any settings that to enabled so that it logs segfaults into /var/log/messages.
I cross checked /etc/syslog.conf of both the systems. Both are same and even /etc/sysconfig/syslog files.

Generally SSH related log messages are logged in /var/log/messages file. Is there a way to log them in another different file? I mean is there some configuration setting to enable this?

I am facing a problem while trying to log SSH messages in a separate file, say, /var/log/ssh_logs. I have tried modifying the syslog-ng.conf file as follows:
filter f_ssh { facility(auth, authpriv) and match("sshd[[0-9]+]:"); };
destination d_ssh { file ("/var/logs/sshd_logs"); };
log {

But still I am not able to get the ssh logs in the new file. They continue to go to /var/log/auth.

I�m looking into preventing the samba messages from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages).I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but messages are still appearing�suppress logging or reconfiguremba such that the �nmbd� and �winbindd� messages do not appear in /var/log/messages

I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

More than 7 G bytes were logged to the messages file last three weeks I got this message in /var/log/messages I want to stop this messaging cause it takes to much space

when I try to use a messenger program on ubuntu, the messages keep dropping out, I have an old-ish netgear router, what I have done is setup a virtual-box with windows xp and i'm having no problems with msn messenger under virtual-box at all, does ubuntu not like old-ish netgear routers?

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. when I am having a conversation in empathy, I find that some messages people have sent me, don't arrive. Also the other way around: people don't receive messages I have sent them. I use ubuntu 10.04 now, but this also occurred to me in 9.10.

I'm going through strange symptom with my linux.
When I type
Code: service xinetd [start|restart|stop]
There is no responses or messages at all. Even when I tried some meaningless argument, such as
Code:service xinetd sdfsdfsdg , it just doesn't work.
I checked that xinetd is installed by using the command
Code: rpm -qv xinetd
Also I do not see the error message "Unrecognized service" when I type the commands.

I know Pidgin doesn't have an option to send group messages. I've been searching for some plugin from a third part, found something for Debian, but nothing for Fedora/Redhat. Does anyone know here a working plugin for this problem?

I have designed a simple mail client to download messages/data to a file.
The server type is CAPA STLS which means can handle noncrypted and encrypted logins.
I have a problem which is that POP3 CAPA STLS mail server does not want to delete messages. It deletes the messages on the non STLS side.
For an STLS session, I receive the +Ok for a Deleted message.
Language C, Library openssl, IP4.
Compiler: gcc.

I am writing a client chat server program in java. The chat server is already written. I created the interface and I connected to the chat server. The server keeps sending protocol messages to whom ever is connected, also it keeps sending specific protocol every 10 sec to check if user is still online.My problem is when I connect from my interface to the chat server, the program gets stuck, I can not press any other button because after connection my program keeps receiving commands from server(I have a method to keep reading after connection). How can I keep track of messages sent from server and not get stuck i.e press other buttons or type in the interface?

I was wondering if you could recommend a simple way to achieve functionality where received email messages are automatically processed and used in SQL commands (depending on certain criteria, of course). For example, say I have made a PHP-based blog application and it's located at example.com and I'd like to give members the option of posting to their blogs by sending email to a special @example.com address. The email messages received there will be inserted into a database depending on the sender's address, with the body becoming the post and the subject line becoming the post's title, etc.
Another example could be how those trouble ticket systems let customers submit tickets via email, while the support agents operate via a database-driven Web application. Is this the type of thing one must code from scratch, or is there an open source solution out there which only needs to be configured accordingly?

According to RFC 1939: "POP3 is not intended to provide extensive manipulation operations of mail on the server; normally, mail is downloaded and then deleted." However most of the mail clients have that option "Leave messages on server" after they have been downloaded. How is it done?
I tried sniffing mail traffic with Wireshark, but the only POP3 provider I have is Gmail and its POP3 access is SSL secured, so I was unable to gather any info from this... I tried downloading sources of Thunderbird and Evolution and checked what are they doing with "leaving messages", but it seems my C++ skills are not enough - I was unable to understand what is happening when "leaving"...
Suggest me some POP3 provider, that is providing unsecured POP3 access, so I could try again reverse engineering with Wireshark?

My script looks really crap and messy, the logic isn't great and I'm not hugely happy with it. Also it echo's $i instead of an actual IP address (line 10). How to improve this. It basically searches through /var/log/messages for multiple FTP hits and when the hit count is higher than a specific number the IP is added to a config file and ftp is restarted. There are some obvious flaws in my script.

I use Fedora 13 x86_64. Recently i installed q4 wine and booting froze with message "registering binary handler for windows applications". Then on removing q4 wine boot froze at "unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon".I also removed wine, smolt.
