I have installed the latest Fedora on an external (USB) hard drive. Is it possible to alter part of the program so that I can run this external hard drive on any machine regardless of it's operating system?
View 4 RepliesI am starting this as I am getting bit desperate. I have installed Windows XP virtual machine. As it created partition, formatted it, and copied files it started to reboot and i got message �A disk read error occurred press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart� I tried also boot from CD, but I got �Booting from CD-ROM... Boot failed, could not read from CDROM (Code001). It seems that it is not even spinning the CD. I have also noticed that there is no CD/DVD drive listed in virtual machine details. Although, there is boot option to select CD as a device to boot from. There are probably two separate issues, booting from HDD and not detecting CDROM. However I installed the same virtual machine on Fedora 12 without any problems and just cannot solve this

View 12 Replies View RelatedI'd like to switch to dual booting on my main machine. However, I'm like, a really serious competitive gamer. I play in leagues, go to LANs and performance is my greatest concern here. If I dual boot Fedora & Windows, will I have any performance issues with Windows, while booting in Windows, if I have Fedora on the same hard drive?
I don't think there should be any issues but I would like some clarification or nformation on it. Searching for 'gaming' with Linux isn't very information when it comes to dual booting, so I was just wondering.
TL;DR: Will dual booting Windows & Fedora cause any CPU/GPU/LAG/performance issues while I boot into windows and play a game (Source, TF2, Unreal Engine Games...etc)?
I'm dual-booting windows 7 on (hd0,0) and Fedora 13 on (hd0,4) and it's working fine until I repaired my windows 7. Afiter I did the repair on my windows 7, The booting sequence now skips the grub menu and automatically boots into windows without allowing me to take my pick.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?

i have ubuntu 10.10 installed in dualboot with win7 on a asus 1201n netbook. the first os in the first black screen boot menu is win7, which means that it is the default os to boot if i don't use the arrow down to ubuntu. well, i had enough experience with ubuntu to decide that i want to defaultly boot into ubuntu.
does anybody know how i change it ? [there is no menu.lst file in 10.10, so i didn't find the way to do it]
i currently am running windos 7 (64 bit) and would also like to install ubuntu on a second hard drive. i understand a dual boot is easy enough to do, but i'd like to install ubuntu so that it and windows are completely isolated. rather than be prompted with a boot screen to choose os, i would do so by changing hd boot priority in bios. i'd like the end result to be 2 separte computers in one box. can it be set up this way, and if so, how?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution.The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.
I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.
Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.
I have been trying to SCP a couple files from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Fedora 12 machine. Before today, did it with out any problems, always worked. Today however; after the SCP is complete from my machine, the file on the other machine is zero bytes, an empty file. The only thing I can remember getting changed was the new kernel that was in the update I did today. But I don't think that would have changed the SCP works.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq CQ40-616TU Laptop. I have installed fedora 11 64 bit more then 20 times and facing the same problems. The Problems are
1) After booting into the fedora it get hanged up and blue screen with the logo of fedora.
2) Some time it shows message that "Could not update /var/lib/gdm/.IC Eauthirity"
3) I have also updated through yum but still facing the same problem
4) I have also tried fedora 12 but during installation process it shows message that no suitable hardware found.
i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? My company's default OS is Windows 7. I convinced my manager so that I could use Fedora 12, since I am mostly familiar with development environment in Fedora. However there are a few things I need in Windows 7, and I want to stop going back and forth in two OS'es in dual boot-up setting.
I've searched online for easy way to use the existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine. I first tried VMware's Vcenter Converter Standalone in Windows 7, but it failed with some error code, and searching the particular error code didn't turn up any solution. I also tried to use Sun's VirtualBox, but I get segmentation fault error in Fedora. I tried to see if VMware server has a tool, but installation exists with an error, and searching the web for the error code didn't turn up anything either.... I wonder if I am having this much difficulties because I am using x86_64 version of OS'es.
Anyhow, if anyone has done it successfully - using existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine in x86_64 version of Fedora 12.
I am using a linux kernel 2.6.36 using mips architecture. I have succesfully booted the machine through Flash memory, but it is not booting through nfs. It is getting stuck at the stage where the image starts loading. In short the vmlinux.img file is being copied properly to nfsroot but the image is not loading.

Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

One thing i have noticed is that once i enter a folder it won't even let me move the folder.
