I try to access my ubuntu machine via my Windows Machine (Samba Server on Ubuntu Machine). Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? I have already tried to remove and purge everything Samba related and then tried reinstalling, but that still didn't do anything
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?
I need to access a Windows Server 2000 machine using a Linux machine via KDE, but that will migrate to Gnome. The Linux user to connect to Windows machine, you should open an application 'XYZ' automatically, and only this, denying any unauthorized access. When you close the application 'XYZ' communications (RDP?) Should be terminated. Do I need a log of accesses and possible attempts to circumvent the system and access other application.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two machines, one has XP service pack2, second one has CentOS 5.3 (Linux), they are connected through crossover cable. I have configured everything fine but don't know why till now can't ping!
A. Windows machine settings as follows:
IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gatway: 192.168.1.1
+ Firewall is turned OFF.
B. For Linux machine, I will list everything stored in network files, logged as [root@localhost ~]# :
1. /etc/sysconfig/network:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0
NETWORKING = yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE="eth0"
IPADDR="192.168.1.4"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ONBOOT="yes"
BOOTPROTO="yes"
3. /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 192.168.1.4
search locadomain
4. I restarted network service using this command:
/etc/init.d/network start
everything is fine. When checking using ifconfig command. I get the following:
eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:0D:EE:19:66
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr:........
[code]....
I mean I assigned the IP: 192.168.1.4 to Linux machine (Eth0). I did everything above and can't ping till now, when pinging from windows or Linux I get a message "destination host unreachable" restarted Linux many times but same result. NETWORK CABLE is working fine I tested it.
after upgrading to 11.04, natty, I have a problem with rsyslogd.
In previous releases I went to:
/etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf
and uncommented the lines under comment:
# I like to have messages displayed on the console, but only on a virtual
# console I usually leave idle.
This was redirecting the log messages to a console I could get to via Ctrl-Alt-Fwhatever.
In natty, this no longer works. When I switch to the relevant console I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
The file /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf still exists. A new arrival is also 50-default.conf.ucf-dist which, as far as I can tell is a clone and which I have also modified like 50-default.conf.
The file /etc/rsyslog.conf (configuration file for rsyslogd) exists and its last line reads:
$IncludeConfig /etc/rsyslog.d/*.conf
which presumably should force rsyslogd to read 50-default.conf at startup.
Looking at the running processes I can see that rsyslogd runs.
Can someone explain to me, or if it's even possible, for a Windoz computer to send a message to Linux (or vice versa) and have the receiver act on that message? For example. I have a DOS program running on a win computer that monitors some hardware connected to the parallel port, and heyu home automation running on the Linux. I would like heyu to turn on a light triggered by an event on win.
Can I send a message, via the OS, from win and run a script on Linux? Can I do that from Linux to Win? Once upon a time there was a messaging system called WinPop (circa Win3.1, and Win95) I assume the functionality still exists even if those archaic programs don't. Currently, I make Windoz create a file on Linux, then the Linux box checks for that file once a minute using cron. This works, but I would prefer a cleaner solution.
I had been using Evolution with no issues though until I installed Ubuntu 10.04 after which I could no longer send outgoing messages. I use a hotmail live account with Evolution. I have also just installed Evolution 2.30 from 2.28 to see if that would solve the issue, but it did not.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there anyway to send txt messages using skype on ubuntu.or is it still in progress.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIt worked for almost a year with no problems. I suspect a recent update changed something.
Hotmail is my mail service. I've read instructions on how to set up Evolution. I've followed them with no change in results.
I've tried smtp.live.com:587. It was originally set as just smtp.live.com.
SSL is the way it is set but i've tried TLS too. I've seen both suggested.
The authentication is set to "PLAIN" yet when I press send/receive the error message says
"Error while Sending message.
Could not connect to smtp.live.com: Input/output error
POP Before SMTP auth using a non-pop source".
I've tried removing it and reinstalling it. One thing I did notice is that after reinstalling it, the last messages I had tried to send were still showing up. It operated as if I hadn't removed it at all. I did restart the computer between the removal and installation.
On another Evolution mail problem post, a user said that Evolution was a crappy program and people should switch to something else. Do many people think that is true? Does Thunderbird from Firefox work much better?
I'd rather fix it than give up by switching. I really like Mail on Apple computers because I can switch to the "from" tab and highlight numerous messages at one time to move them or delete them. In Evolution I must delete them one at a time.
On RedHat style distroes tty12 show /var/log/messages. How can we implement this feature in Slackware?

A little prior to this I installed Wine beta using Ubuntu Software Centre, then applied the multiuser wine recipe as noted here [URL] /showthread.php?t=917422&), then installed a game called ToonTalk3 [URL], and then tried to install DirectX 10 as per these instructions [URL]
The directx install stalled with a series of messages about being unable to copy certain dll files. I aborted the install, using the install wizard's abort command. It was a bit after this that I noticed the flashing symptoms. They may have been there earlier but I usually run my apps full screen so wouldn't have noticed.
I've reversed the wine multi-user configure, again using the recipe, and run `sudo apt-get purge wine1.2`, and logged off and on. The flashing and errors still occur.During logon there are bunch of indicator applet error message dialog boxes (which I'll post later after finishing this message and conducting another log off/on cycle). I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 32bit on an Acer Asper 3500 notebook. The install is about 2 weeks old.
I keep getting emails from my 404 error handling system on my CMS saying "mail3.xps.idv.tw:25 cannot be found" with no referer. It would appear that someone is trying to use my server to relay spam to Taiwan. How do I check that my server has the right security to stop this happening?

My Evolution email client is able to send only smal messages. As soon as the email message is more than approx. 20 lines, sending is blocked. The status line displays "Sending message (0% complete)" for a few minutes and then it displays "Error while sending message." Receiving of email messages works fine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHas thunderbird (recent version) have a "TEST" function ? basically, i'm trying to send messages, with 20+ accounts (different emails, but one domain / SMTP server). one account works fine - the other one doesn't. i go to my "outgoing server" & everything is fine - usernames / ports etc..) The settings for each account do show the right outgoing server. If i 'send later' & close down thunderbird, 7 re-open - it asks me for my password again (which it saves), & then it is able to send the email.
QUESTION :- is there a TESt option that will test each & EVERY account in one timeslot ? Ie, will go through each email address - sends an email to itself (the same address), & sends it. it will then try the server again, to see if the email was received. & then give me a single report, of all the incorrect settings.(I've tried this 1 email account half a dozen times tonight & i dont know *WHY* its not sending on the 1st go.. )
I'm trying implement a small server for a university work, my server is creating, binding and listening but it don't accept any connection, these are the files I'm using in server:
Code:
// Definition of the Socket class
#ifndef SOCKET_H
#define SOCKET_H
#include <sys/types.h>
code....
I've made a client just for test it, but no ones run well, the server is always returning -1 when accept is called!!
What should I do to send and receive messages in this server??
The system crontab (/etc/crontab) uses the same format, except that the username for the command is specified after the time and date fields and before the command.
[code]...
Every hour, I get an e-mail complaining about the first line of the crontab:
[code]...
I get the same complaint from the other entries: It looks to me as if cron, or anacron, is trying to execute the user (root) as a command. Predictably, the shell doesn't like it, so barfs and triggers an e-mail about it. Why is this not doing what the man page says it should do? The 2nd problem I believe is related to exim, not cron. The e-mails I'm getting above are being bounced from my ISP because they are directed to root@myisp.com, rather than my regular e-mail address. When the message bounces, it bounces to my regular e-mail address. In /etc/aliases, I have root: [URL]... and in etc/email-addresses I have root: [URL]... Adding the entry to /etc/email-addresses allowed the bounce to find me because the sender's address is [URL]... but how can I get cron to send these messages to me in the first place, instead of root?
I know Pidgin doesn't have an option to send group messages. I've been searching for some plugin from a third part, found something for Debian, but nothing for Fedora/Redhat. Does anyone know here a working plugin for this problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently ran across a Windoz program that allows you to send Voice Messages in your email, it's called TalktheTalk. and I am wondering if there is a similar program for Linux. It does not require the recipient to have a chat client or anything like that. You just record your message, I guess, I haven't used the TalktheTalk program, attach it to your email, and send it. The recipient opens the attachment and can listen to your message.
