Software :: Error Messages When Booting Into Ubuntu?
Jun 20, 2011
I'm not sure when this occurred, but it happened either when I was trying to install the new gnome-shell, or after installing kbuntu. In any event, when I try to boot Ubuntu 10.04, I get the login screen where I enter my username/password. After doing so, I get the following error messages (in this order). I should note that add the login screen, I have the option boot gnome, kde, failsafe gnome, etc. I tried all the options with the same result:
"Cannot open consolekit session: unable to open session: failed to execute to program /lib/dbus-daemon-launch-helper:success"
"Cannot enter home directory. Using /"
"Could not duplicate ICEauthority file/.Iceauthority."
Every boot, I see screenfuls of staprun error messages fly by, e.g from /var/log/boot.msg:
Code: <notice -- Aug 31 23:39:53.511288000> service boot.startpreload startstaprun:send_a_relocation:336: ERROR: reloc name too long: .gnu.linkonce.r._ZN6AsicNII18ucode_class_caymanE23NITiling ModeLookupTableE: No such file or directory
I want to know if there is a way to disable the GUI console on 10.04 Server I want the traditional pure text console ... no plymouth, no plymouth-theme, just 80x24 console. Another question, Is there a way to get those traditional messages when booting? Like 8.04 Server does?
Looking through syslog, I see some peculiar messages that occur when booting my Debian machine up. Can anyone explain to me, why it seams to think my filesystem is read only, and what do the other messages mean? Is there anything I need to start worrying about?

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version. I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
Can someone please help me? I'm a noob and I've never had a problem like this before.Ever since I installed on this system every time I start up I get a bunch of error windows.I tried pressing the "Don't Delete" or "Reload" buttons as appropriate. Then the applets sometimes reappear and sometimes they don't. Please help a noob!
I just upgraded to 10.04 through the Update Manager. During the updated however I got an error telling me that it was unable to install something. Sorry, I can't remember what it was; it didn't stop the updated so I assumed it wasn't that important. Anyways, I don't know if this is because of that error, but during the boot process and when shutting the computer I get console messages. When I boot it tells me that "mounting none on /dev failed No such device" and when I shut down I get these messages.I see this was asked before and that it isn't a big issue, but I'd still like to solve it. The problem is that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general I don't know how to follow the very general instructions given in that thread.
Problem-cannot mount 2 other samba computers on my ubuntu 10.04 via 'sudo mountall'. Additionally I now get Firefox/Thunderbird error messages as listed below. Had no problems with ubuntu UNTIL I attempted install of VirtualBox running WinXP client in my Ubuntu host. VirtualBox seemed to install ok but upon startup of WinXP client all I got was a black screen. To close it I had to do "Power Off" which VBox manual says is like a hard power off and is to be avoided. So I guess it's like I crashed XP within Ubuntu.
Now - ubuntu boots ok except will not auto mount other samba connected computers. Manually running 'sudo mountall' in terminal gives -- p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18: swapon failed: Device or resource busy mountall: swapon /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 [2235] terminated with status 255 mountall: Problem activating swap: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 retrying with upper case share name mount error(6): No such device or address Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) mountall: mount /media/samba_share [2239] terminated with status 32
Additionally I now get these warning messages when Firefox and Thunderbird start. (They do start and seem to work fine.)-- Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0) p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } What I've tried-
1) fstab UUID matches error UUID above and matches UUID from blkid command: fstab =#Entry for /dev/sdc2 : UUID=24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 none swap sw 0 0 p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } blkid = /dev/sdc2: UUID="24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18" TYPE="swap"
2) Reinstalled mountall from synaptic pkg manager; did not try to remove mountall and reinstall. To remove, removes LOTS of other packages from system - not brave enough to do that (yet).
3) Ran fsck on swap partition as below. Swap not found. (that confuses me.)p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } john@johndesk:~$ fsck /dev/sdc2 fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 fsck: fsck.swap: not found fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.swap for /dev/sdc2 p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } 4) deleted all the files in ~/.dbus/session-bus. Ubuntu just rebuilds the same file back.
I have Ubuntu 9.10. The batter drained several days ago, and now when I attempt to boot I simply get a string of indecipherable error messages which last for about 5 minutes, and the screen then goes completely black. I am not able to even get to the login screen. Windows 7 Starter boots fine, so it's definitely a software issue. Any solutions short of completely reinstalling? I really don't want to lose all of my data.
Why is it that I kept getting error messages that basically were saying that could not connect to the Ubuntu servers to do download of updates to Ubuntu that is until I switched to the MAIN ubuntu server at which point it worked fine.I tried several of the Ubuntu servers other than the MAIN server and kept getting error messages. Is there some problem with those other servers ?
I just installed Natty on my laptop. It has SSD drive, so to align the file system to the physical block size properly I created the partitions manually. After the installation it only boots to the GRUB recovery console, so I tried re-installing GRUB from Live CD by:
Code: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
It now boots to the system but always shows the following error messages instead of the GRUB menu on every boot:
Code: error: file not found. error: file not found. error: no suitable mode found. error: no video mode activated. error: file not found. error: file not found.
I suspect that I've missed out something during the installation, since SSD drives seem to need some more attention.
I have a CLEVO laptop and it currently has Windows 7 installed. I now want to create a separate partition to install Ubunutu 9.10 64bit. I attempted to install this and the install part worked fine but as soon as I rebooted all I seem to be getting after the BIOS is 'grub loading'. I get no other error messages and am stumped on what the problem is. It also meant I couldnt load windows either but I fixed this by loading the windows cd, running repair and then fixing the MBR which another thread mentioned. Once this was done windows loading up ok. I have checked nearly every setting and it has made no difference. I tried reinstalling 9.10 but came up with the same problem. I am not sure what I did in Windows may have caused it. I have a 320gb drive and I shrunk it using disk management as I know the ubuntu will see this free space and install the OS onto it. Should I have left this and let 9.10 create some space automatically during install?
I have a LAMP installation for learning php and mysql. My online trainer pointed out that we always get a white screen when the php is wrong, when we should get error messages that say which line in the code is wrong etc.
I recently reinstalled mysql so it is the latest version from the repositories for Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.
Just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5745G, straight away I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10, I stuck in the cd and rebooted the new laptop that currently only seemed to have Linpus Linux, I then got masses of error messages saying something such as cannot run var/ etc etc and then
It does this for many, many lines then sites there for ages doing nothing and wont allow me to type any commands ( I dont know any command really apart from 'reboot') and then finally after 5 mins or so shows the command prompt [root@localhost /]# but I cant do anything from here.
I've done some searches and found this thread:
url
but startx and system-cofig-display dont work and just says bad commands.
Ive also tried changing the settings so it always reboots from dvd, same problem, made a USB ubuntu start up, forced booting from usb, same again.
What happened to the cloud icon. Also using sys>prefs>ubuntuone takes me to the login page. It offers to add the machine but then this page pops up with these errors.
I'm trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on a new Dell studio 1535. Since I have 4GB of RAM I went with the 64bit version. I can get to the menu where I select to check disk, install, try without changing etc... However when I tried to check the disc integrity I saw the Ubuntu logo for about ten minutes and then let it sit for another 20 minutes, and all I saw was a blank screen. I then tried making another CD and came up with the same results. I then tried to install and at first it was like before, but then i started getting different error messages the majority had the form: [ 771.744543] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 337015another looked like:[ 1244.029631] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0 sector 673592a few said something about SQUASHFS.I have tried three different CD's I looked at the hash and they matched up so the file is fine. I downloaded the 32bit version and I'm going to try that just to see if it works.
and sometimes the box apears multiple times and shakes like it does if entering a wrong password - and ends up with failed I'd be pleasant to get some help as it looks like most of the people in the german IRC don't know what to do as they thought like me these software parts would use gksu
I installed ubuntu with the windows installer. while installing in windows, multiple error messages showed up, but installation still proceeded.it rebooted, and ubuntu finished installation.on the next reboot, when i chose ubuntu from the windows boot manager, it loaded grub.however, there was no option for booting ubuntu in grub, and you are forced to go back to the windows boot manager.
I've been burning a few linux ISOs lately to play around on a desktop I have (archlinux, Fedora, etc) and a few days ago Brasero stopped launching. I tried to uninstall/reinstall Brasero, but it still didn't work. There we no error messages, it would just try to start up, and quit.
I got frustrated and tried to run Brasero from the command line and got this: Code: user@computer:~$ brasero Bus Error user@computer:~$

I have a number of applications (Evolution, Openoffice Writer & Calc, Firefox) that are popping up an error message when I close them, but the window snaps closed before I can read the message. The applications run fine as far as I can tell. how to slow or pause the error message so I can figure out what's going on.
We have a working backup script which gave no problems ever. But recently the backup is failed giving following error messages,
Statement just before the error occured was, /usr/bin/rsh remoteserver1 /tmp/backup/script.scr
1. The system has no more ptys. Ask your system administrator to create more. 2. The system only has a finite number of ptys and you have many of them in use. The usual reason for this is that you forgot (or didn't know) to call "wait" after closing each of them.
So it looks like the system is falling short of the /dev/pty ...atleast I think so. Dont know the real reason.
besides those error messages it seems to work.if there is an iso-cd in the drive i get similar messages during boot and need to hit ctrl+c to go on with booting.
Does anyone experience burning problem with Brasero? At first, everything was great, but lately I receive all kind of messages (mounting problem, ejecting problem etc.) and burning is unsuccessful.
Yesterday, after I reinstall suse linux enterprise 11 in my note book. I got some error messages. They are : From Suse linux installing processedacroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm After installed suse linux. error messages for all options in yast2.
The story is when I started installing suse linux, I checked first the live cd and I got message that live cd is okay. But, when the installation process was running, I got 2 messages error. But, the messages were informing me to verified from software management module.
So, my questions are :What are acroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm and yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm and what are they fungtions? If my guess is not wrong, acroread means acrobat reader. Is it true? Where is others place I can download them (no.1,2,3) beside the live cd? Or, if the easyest way is live cd. As yast2 got error, is there an other way I can installed them (no.1,2,3)?
