View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I decided to go on and install 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS... I created the live USB as directed on the Ubuntu download page. I download Universal USB Installer and it says USB created successfully. However, when I boot from the USB the error comes up as mentioned in title... The USB has no problems because I installed 10.10 last time from the very same USB. There's nothing wrong with the procedure because I am following the officially suggested method. Also, nothing wrong with partitions because one instance of Ubuntu is installed and was working fine until I tried to install video drivers (long story)...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to install Ubuntu on a couple of computers without CD drives (netbooks), so I followed these instructions to create a bootable flash drive: http:[url].....That worked fine for both netbooks. Now I'm trying to use the same flash drive on a desktop currently running Windows Vista, but get his message when I try to boot from the flash drive:
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!I tried to boot one of the netbooks from the flash drive again and that still works.I'm thinking a BIOS setting.
I downloaded SUSE to a directory and copied that to a CD to use for running a trial on a 950 Mhz laptop. The CD does show a directory Boot and the boot directory does contain files. There is also a file named syslinux.cfg which when viewed from MS XP is identified as a configuration file for MS Office Outlook.
On boot attempts from the CD I get the Error message: No default or UI configuration directive found.Do I have an error on the D/L disk or is my proceedure not correct?
Syslinux shows the message in the title everytime I try to boot from a 2gb usb drive. I've tried with Xubuntu 10.04 Desktop for i386 and Linux Mint 9, both with Unetbootin and Universal USB Installer, but I'm getting the same error all the time, it's driving me crazy. I haven't tried with other USB sticks or a different PC though, that's next on my list. Below's a dxdiag file for if you need it,

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying install rhel 6 on my rhel 5. I have downloaded rhel6.0-20100715.2-server-i386-dvd1.iso (from redhat ftp site) and burned into dvd. After rebooting I pressed F12 and chose cd installation.
I get the following message on my screen.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
i have a dual boot system set up right now through wubi. the installation went fine. but then i tried to upgrade ubuntu from 10.04.2 to 10.10. the update went fine, no errors. but afterwards when i restarted my computer and selected ubuntu, it said "error: file not found" it didn't even get to grub. this has happened numerous of times trying to upgrade in the past.
p.s: i have vista installed as the other side of the dual boot.
I installed ndiswrapper and tried adding a driver. Error: module ndiswrapper not found.So I recompiled my kernel, upgrading to 2.6.33.4 (no, I can't see the logical connection either) After a week, I got the new kernel working ( in the interim I reinstalled debian- it didn't survive my first kernel attempt. don't ask), and reinstalled ndiswrapper. Same problem. So I had a stoke of genius: download the source package!! So I did. Lo and behold, a new directory appeared in /usr/src/ : modules. I took a moment to admire my work, then I jumped in.I 'ls'ed to see what was going on, and found a Makefile. so I typed 'make'. First error: kernel source not found. So I entered the Makefile, found the(clearly marked)variable,and changed it to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33.4 , exited, and redid 'make' Second error: no wireless support in kernel. So I went to src/linux-2.6.33.4 and did a make menuconfig- loaded my current, threw in wireless, and exited.

When trying to install Debian 6.02 from a boot cd, the boot halts with the error message Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. In looking for a solution I see a great deal about this problem occurring after messy upgrades and the like, but when when booting from a cd downloaded right from the debian website.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a new installation. I try to boot and instead of my grub menu, I get "error: file not found" and am dropped into the rescue prompt. I have just a standard "Desktop" installation. I installed from the 5.05 net install cd. I installed grub to the MBR.
partitions are:
hd0,2 is /
hd0,5 is swap
entering the "set" command results in:
prefix=(hd0,2)/boot/grub
root=hd0,2

After resetting a pc running lenny I get iptables errors at boot ("resource temporarily unavailable", "bad rule" etc). "setting up firewall" (Guarddog) is not followed by any errors and the firewall apparently operates ok.How can I restore my iptables to the default installation values?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a set of two amd64 machines with Debian Lenny. Machine 2 reads all the users' information from the Machine 1 through LDAP. Also, in Machine 2 I set up a dchroot environment for 32 bits compatibility ( following [URL]
In addition to the above instructions, on this Machine 2, I set up /etc/libnss*, /etc/ldap/*, and /etc/nsswitch.conf both for the amd64 and for the i386 environments. I have no problems if I'm in the native amd64 mode. However, once I enter the i386 dchroot, some strange things happen:
1) For users from uid=1000 to uid=1031, I get an error if running 'whoami' (Cannot find name for user ID XXXX) and if I run 'id' , I get all the correct group numbers but no translation to group names in parenthesis as it should be. 'ls -l' also only lists group numbers but no names.
2) for user 1032 I cannot even change into the dchroot, I get the error "E: Group '1,031' not found"
I recently did a single boot install of Lenny-xfce on a Compaq Armada laptop. There were no errors and grub indeed found that Lenny was the only OS on the hard drive and installed itself on the MBR. My problem is that I'm getting an error 18 when booting the freshly installed system from hard disk. I booted into rescue mode and started a shell to take a look around. There are files on the drive and /etc/grub exists. device.map shows dev(0,0) as being mapped to /dev/hda. A search on the forum for "grub error 18" came up with nothing.

I have installed Red Hat Linux 5 and using it. But when I uninstalled one package and booting after that, I got the following error

I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:

I had a windows 7 professional on my computer. I tried dual booting it with ubuntu. While installing ubuntu when it asks which partition you want to install it "as it said your all data in the partition would be erased but not before you confirm" so I selected go back and aborted installation because I didn't wanted that and bang I start my system again an I get this error "no boot device found". I ran my hard disk test it say's passed so I don't think my hard disk is corrupted. I tried using windows 7 recovery disc but I guess it doesn't even detects a operating system on my laptop. I got no back up of my data. Any way to get back my data if I cant get windows back!

When I open terminal and enter visudo I get the following error message...

Although I am quite new to debian, I have done this successfully in the past so not sure why this is happening?
I just installed debian from debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-standard+nonfree.iso and after installation, which finished without problems, I cannot boot the system. I get the error:

From grub-rescue via ls command I see that I don't have the i386-pc folder inside /boot/grub. I have only two files:
unicode.pf2 and grub.cfg
I'm trying to boot into the Live CD (64bit version) and it dies with an error "nouveau .... 0x8DF6 Init table command not found: 0xA9". Get the same error after I install and try to boot into Debian, it starts booting but errors out later.
