May 19, 2010I recently decided to install Ubuntu on a couple of computers without CD drives (netbooks), so I followed these instructions to create a bootable flash drive: http:[url].....That worked fine for both netbooks. Now I'm trying to use the same flash drive on a desktop currently running Windows Vista, but get his message when I try to boot from the flash drive:
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!I tried to boot one of the netbooks from the flash drive again and that still works.I'm thinking a BIOS setting.

Nov 15, 2010I downloaded SUSE to a directory and copied that to a CD to use for running a trial on a 950 Mhz laptop. The CD does show a directory Boot and the boot directory does contain files. There is also a file named syslinux.cfg which when viewed from MS XP is identified as a configuration file for MS Office Outlook.
On boot attempts from the CD I get the Error message: No default or UI configuration directive found.Do I have an error on the D/L disk or is my proceedure not correct?

Aug 19, 2010Syslinux shows the message in the title everytime I try to boot from a 2gb usb drive. I've tried with Xubuntu 10.04 Desktop for i386 and Linux Mint 9, both with Unetbootin and Universal USB Installer, but I'm getting the same error all the time, it's driving me crazy. I haven't tried with other USB sticks or a different PC though, that's next on my list. Below's a dxdiag file for if you need it,

Dec 6, 2010So I decided to go on and install 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS... I created the live USB as directed on the Ubuntu download page. I download Universal USB Installer and it says USB created successfully. However, when I boot from the USB the error comes up as mentioned in title... The USB has no problems because I installed 10.10 last time from the very same USB. There's nothing wrong with the procedure because I am following the officially suggested method. Also, nothing wrong with partitions because one instance of Ubuntu is installed and was working fine until I tried to install video drivers (long story)...

The installer was unable to recognize the ethernet card of my ibook which I found odd since I have used Lenny in the past without having any problems. Does anyone know if this is a bug in the installer or has firmware for my ethernet card been dropped from Squeeze? I searched around and couldn't find any bugs that were specific to PPC with this installer. It is not a deal breaker as I can just install Lenny and then dist upgrade to Squeeze,

May 2, 2010I would like to know which is the default audio system for Squeeze. I'll explain the reason for this question: I had a lenny desktop working like a charm until the hard disk damaged completely. After buying a new desktop computer, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I didn't know that the default audio system for Ubuntu was pulseaudio; so I always had problems with skype and my microphone. I remember that with my lenny desktop I never ever had any problem with my sound system and skype.
I've googled for months without finding a consistent fix for this problem in Ubuntu, I've also heard lots and lots of people with the same problem as mine and never solved it; so I decided to get rid of it and install debian Squeeze in my box, but I would like to be sure which is the default audio system for Squeeze, or at least know if anyone have had problems with skype and Squeeze.

Mar 22, 2011I have trouble setting up NFS on Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-kirkwood armv5tel GNU/Linux) running on a Sheevaplug. After some digging and googling I found that the NFS server is (probably) not properly installed.
no rules in iptables or hosts.allow or hosts.deny. Fresh OS install.
apt-get install --reinstall nfs-kernel-server
generates this output:

I don't know that I can specify "debian-installer/framebuffer=false" during the installation, after reboot I got a framebuffer display with console fonts smaller and fonts look like ubuntu. I search around I can edit GRUB config for the resolution items or disable framebuffer. How can I disable the framebuffer (use normal text system fonts) when booting in LILO?
I got everything installed and setuped, I don't want to re-install the OS again.

Jul 6, 2010I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)
Debian :: Kernel Cannot Be Found On Squeeze DVD?
Jun 6, 2011I'm attempting to dual boot my computer with Slackware, Debian and Windows. I've installed Lilo to the mbr from Slackware, i've edited my lilo.conf file so I can boot Debian. When I boot debian though, it says it's boot kernel 2.6.37 which is the slackware kernael it fails to load the modules. I think my problem is in the lilo.conf file in the debian line, "image = /boot/vmlinuz", if I've understood correctly I should put the debian kernals name after that line, I've done as I saw on the internet, but it comes up with, "kernel can not be found" or something similar to that. I think it's looking for it in a slackware directory. Is there a place on the debian dvds (i've all eight) I can get the kernel?

Apr 30, 2010I'm wondering if anyone knows what will be Squeeze's default filesystem. Will it be the proven ext3 or the newer (sometimes faster, sometimes slower) ext4?
I currently have ext4 and I have nothing to complain about. In fact, my overall experience has been very positive. Ext4 is definitely faster when fsck runs during boot.
What would be the cons of having ext4 as default in Squeeze?

Aug 28, 2011When I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".
I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.
What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.
