Debian Installation :: No Init Found When Booting From CD (on Sun Blade 2500)

Jul 7, 2011

When trying to install Debian 6.02 from a boot cd, the boot halts with the error message Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. In looking for a solution I see a great deal about this problem occurring after messy upgrades and the like, but when when booting from a cd downloaded right from the debian website.

Debian Installation :: Sparc On A Sun Blade 2500 Workstation - Does Not Boot

Feb 7, 2011

I am an intermediate linux user. However, I know nothing about solaris. I am trying to install Debian Sparc on a sun blade 2500 workstation. I was told it should work. I am able to go through the debian installation process but when the box reboots it does not boot into Debian. I have now gone through the debian install process several times and now it saids there are too many primary partitions. I tried a rescue install but it saids there are no partitions installed on disk? What am I doing wrong? I am curious if I need to pass a specific argument at the command line to boot into silo? I cannot find any relevant guidance online about this problem and I cannot believe I am the only one to stumble here.

Debian Installation :: No Init Found When Trying To Run Lenny?

Mar 25, 2010

I installed ubuntu on my dual boot Debian/Lenny and windows 7 toshiba laptop. Now when I try to boot Lenny i get the following error messages:

kinit : name_to_dev_t(/dev/sda6)=dev(8,6)
kinit : trying to resume from /dev/sda6
kinit : No resume image doing normal boot ....

[code].....

I can see the whole filesystem is there. The problem may have something to do with the boot loader. I was originally using Grub 1.5 when I just had Lenny and Windows 7, but when I installed ubuntu it has installed GRUB 2. When I use the debian install cd to go into rescue mode, all the init scripts are still where they should be. Another thing that happened when I partioned of a section for ubuntu all the dev numbers went up one. In the debian /boot/grub/menu.lst windows 7 was booting under (hd0,1) now it boots under (hd0,2) debian used to boot from (hd0,7) with root=/dev/sda8 but now it is under (hd0,8) root=/dev/sda9 in the GRUB2 menu.lst. Is there anyway to get my Debian back up and running? After 6 months of studying it at uni I am finally learning my way around and want it back.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Stopped Booting - No Init Found

Mar 6, 2011

I installed 10.04 on daughter's laptop. It's been working perfectly but suddenly it's refusing to boot. Sadly, she's now half way around the world so I can't fiddle around to get it working. She's posted me a photo of the screen.

Here's what seems to be the important part:
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.

Ubuntu :: Computer Seemed To Be Frozen - Reboot - No Init Found. Try Passing Init - Bootarg"

Jan 1, 2011

I've been dual booting 10.10 with Windows7 for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.

This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.

I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem.

It failed to boot and got this message: no init found. try passing init= bootarg

The problem now is that it requires a Live CD session and I keep getting this: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)

In case it matters, I didn't install 10.10 from an ISO, I just upgraded from 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Error - No Init Found - Try Passing Init=bootarg

Jan 20, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot! System froze this morning, I restarted and it is now failing to boot. Starts loading grub and I get this message:

mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/04aa3697-7bc0-45b5-b86a-77a1e6534bd5 on /root failed: invalid argument
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory

[code]....

I booted with 9.04 LiveCD discovered the drive could not be mounted-ran fsck -ln and it told me the drive has no valid partition table. I have had intermittent problems mounting flash drives before this, so I'm kind of worried it might be a hardware issue. Also have files on that drive I would rather not lose, so reinstalling is hopefully a last resort.

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu :: Wont Boot - "no Init Found. Try Passing Init=bootarg"

Jan 31, 2011

While I was using my computer a few days ago, the terminal stopped working properly, so I tried to reboot, and when it started up again it wouldn't boot and said "no init found. try passing init=bootarg"

This has happened twice before, so I really need to figure out what keeps happening, otherwise I can't continue to use linux. i reinstalled both times before. i think that this is caused by a process that prevents me from using the hard drive, because when I try to check the disk in the terminal or in gparted, it says Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1. Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?

Also, in the disk utility, in the lower right corner of the filesystem it has a spinning "loading wheel".(i'm not sure if that means anything)

I am using ubuntu 10.10, but am not sure what kernel I am using, but i tried a few different kernel options(there's three of them at start up). safe mode does not work either.

General :: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing - No Init Found - Try Passing Init - Option To Kernel

Apr 19, 2011

Im am building a Linux distro. It will be very tiny and fast.

I only have a minimal linuxkernel (bzImage) who is 1,2 mb big. And then I have Busybox who is 174,6 kb big.

The commands in busybox is: cd, ls, mkdir, rmdir, wget, httpd, clear, rm, poweroff, halt, reboot, fdisk, mount, umount, free, and cp.

When I compiled the kernel i use initramfs/initrd function and point it to a folder where initrd/initramfs source is.

The kernel works OK with others initramfs/initrd files. But not with my own.

Quote:

Here is how the end of the kernelcomplie look like.

Quote:

Here is my init file who is the initrd/initramfs source.

Quote:

The initramfs folder contains "bin" (folder) and "init" a file. No more.

The problem is that the kernel cannot find/read init file.

The installation completes up to the point where the system needs to reboot , however after the reboot it does not start up again and get stuck at the message: "Trying to boot from drive c:"

We used the rescue option to mount the installation and cant find nythign wrong, even with the grub setup (except that it points to hd96 as its primary disk). we tried changing this to hd0 as well but still no luck.

After about 3 installations we are still not having any luck.

Try passing init= bootargI received this error no matter which kernel I tried...After researching i downloaded and installed the iso onto USB stick. This however also failed because for some reason it did not know the location of vmlinuz and initrd.lz.However, when i inserted the code so it would know the location of these files it loads somewhat but eventually comes up with the same "init" error.

Ubuntu Installation :: Sparc Blade With Large Vertical Stripes On Screen?

Jun 29, 2011

I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.

Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.

My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.
