Debian Installation :: No Init Found When Booting From CD (on Sun Blade 2500)
Jul 7, 2011
When trying to install Debian 6.02 from a boot cd, the boot halts with the error message Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. In looking for a solution I see a great deal about this problem occurring after messy upgrades and the like, but when when booting from a cd downloaded right from the debian website.
I am an intermediate linux user. However, I know nothing about solaris. I am trying to install Debian Sparc on a sun blade 2500 workstation. I was told it should work. I am able to go through the debian installation process but when the box reboots it does not boot into Debian. I have now gone through the debian install process several times and now it saids there are too many primary partitions. I tried a rescue install but it saids there are no partitions installed on disk? What am I doing wrong? I am curious if I need to pass a specific argument at the command line to boot into silo? I cannot find any relevant guidance online about this problem and I cannot believe I am the only one to stumble here.
I installed ubuntu on my dual boot Debian/Lenny and windows 7 toshiba laptop. Now when I try to boot Lenny i get the following error messages:
kinit : name_to_dev_t(/dev/sda6)=dev(8,6) kinit : trying to resume from /dev/sda6 kinit : No resume image doing normal boot ....
[code].....
I can see the whole filesystem is there. The problem may have something to do with the boot loader. I was originally using Grub 1.5 when I just had Lenny and Windows 7, but when I installed ubuntu it has installed GRUB 2. When I use the debian install cd to go into rescue mode, all the init scripts are still where they should be. Another thing that happened when I partioned of a section for ubuntu all the dev numbers went up one. In the debian /boot/grub/menu.lst windows 7 was booting under (hd0,1) now it boots under (hd0,2) debian used to boot from (hd0,7) with root=/dev/sda8 but now it is under (hd0,8) root=/dev/sda9 in the GRUB2 menu.lst. Is there anyway to get my Debian back up and running? After 6 months of studying it at uni I am finally learning my way around and want it back.
I installed 10.04 on daughter's laptop. It's been working perfectly but suddenly it's refusing to boot. Sadly, she's now half way around the world so I can't fiddle around to get it working. She's posted me a photo of the screen.
Here's what seems to be the important part: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.
I'm trying to boot into the Live CD (64bit version) and it dies with an error "nouveau .... 0x8DF6 Init table command not found: 0xA9". Get the same error after I install and try to boot into Debian, it starts booting but errors out later.
Running Intel 4770K on Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H with 8G ram, Nvidia graphics card and several SSDs ...
I am novice in linux and I have installed linux ES in my previous window desktop it was working fine. I try to make a bootidisk and system is not booting anymore. Following error I am getting at the booting time.
I've been dual booting 10.10 with Windows7 for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.
This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.
I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem.
It failed to boot and got this message: no init found. try passing init= bootarg
The problem now is that it requires a Live CD session and I keep getting this: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
In case it matters, I didn't install 10.10 from an ISO, I just upgraded from 10.04.
Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot! System froze this morning, I restarted and it is now failing to boot. Starts loading grub and I get this message:
mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/04aa3697-7bc0-45b5-b86a-77a1e6534bd5 on /root failed: invalid argument mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory

I booted with 9.04 LiveCD discovered the drive could not be mounted-ran fsck -ln and it told me the drive has no valid partition table. I have had intermittent problems mounting flash drives before this, so I'm kind of worried it might be a hardware issue. Also have files on that drive I would rather not lose, so reinstalling is hopefully a last resort.
Im trying to install CACTI EZ on a HP Proliant Blade 460c G6. But im having problem with detecting the hard disk. CACTI EZ installation has the drivers for this and loads the driver itself. But when it now detects for the drive, it has the error "Drive not Found".Do you have bootable CD (iso image) that can load the drivers for Cent OS 5 for HP Proliant Blade 460c G6 server.
i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version. I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
Recently I tried installing Ubuntu via CD, I burned the Image like the website said, It booted then it gave a black screen saying init was not found or something in that nature. I tried a few more times with no luck. I am making another CD to see if it works, hopefully it will,. Its a relatively old HDD. It has Win 98 on it. 9.18 GB space.Quantum Fireball lct 10 3.5" series.
While I was using my computer a few days ago, the terminal stopped working properly, so I tried to reboot, and when it started up again it wouldn't boot and said "no init found. try passing init=bootarg"
This has happened twice before, so I really need to figure out what keeps happening, otherwise I can't continue to use linux. i reinstalled both times before. i think that this is caused by a process that prevents me from using the hard drive, because when I try to check the disk in the terminal or in gparted, it says Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1. Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?
Also, in the disk utility, in the lower right corner of the filesystem it has a spinning "loading wheel".(i'm not sure if that means anything)
I am using ubuntu 10.10, but am not sure what kernel I am using, but i tried a few different kernel options(there's three of them at start up). safe mode does not work either.
We have done an installation on a blade server (HP) for RHEL4.5.
The server have an HP smart array 2200 controller and during installation it can see the controller and disks just fine.
The installation completes up to the point where the system needs to reboot , however after the reboot it does not start up again and get stuck at the message: "Trying to boot from drive c:"
We used the rescue option to mount the installation and cant find nythign wrong, even with the grub setup (except that it points to hd96 as its primary disk). we tried changing this to hd0 as well but still no luck.
After about 3 installations we are still not having any luck.
I have a IBM BladeCenter HS21 and im planning to load debian lenny.pls let me know it is possible to load debian in ibm blade server.does ibm support debian i386.
I updated ubuntu (10.10) today after not doing so in a while and there was an error after it had done most of the updates. However, foolishly, I payed little attention to this and i rebooted my computer for the rest of updates to take effect and received the error:Quote:No init found. Try passing init= bootargI received this error no matter which kernel I tried...After researching i downloaded and installed the iso onto USB stick. This however also failed because for some reason it did not know the location of vmlinuz and initrd.lz.However, when i inserted the code so it would know the location of these files it loads somewhat but eventually comes up with the same "init" error.

i have a dual boot system set up right now through wubi. the installation went fine. but then i tried to upgrade ubuntu from 10.04.2 to 10.10. the update went fine, no errors. but afterwards when i restarted my computer and selected ubuntu, it said "error: file not found" it didn't even get to grub. this has happened numerous of times trying to upgrade in the past.
p.s: i have vista installed as the other side of the dual boot.
installed lenny and am trying to install brother dcp7010 again:
1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.
2) when i install dcp7010 cupswrapper
dpkg -i cupswrapperDCP7010-2.0.1-2.i386.de it ends with " lpinfo: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt lpadmin: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt" (connection to server not possible, refused)
3)[URL] doesn't work.
4)foomatic-gui can't find the installed dcp7010 lpr-driver
brdcp7010lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb, (a couple of days ago it did)
This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.
I am trying something: I would like to access to some data stored on a usb stick while I am booting to the kernel using the "init=/bin/sh" parameters. Is that possible ?My USB stick is detected when I do 'cat /var/log/messages.log | grep sdb". I had to "modprobe usb-storage".Quote:localhot kernel : sdb: sdb1localhost kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable diskBut I still can't get it mounted.Quote:mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist"
I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.
Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.
My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.
I've been using ubuntu for around 4 months now and have never had a problem until recently. My OS became unresponsive all of a sudden and all I could do was force shutdown my laptop by holding the power button. When I turned it back on, I was given the "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg" error. I have looked around online and most solutions point towards a live cd, which I don't have.
I have a Dell Mini 12 running what I think is Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix. It won't boot all of a sudden, saying 'No init found'. I've been through [URL].. which is VERY close to my problem but I cannot get Disk Utility to work when running off my Live USB. Asking it to check the hard drive results in it telling me the filesystem is 'not clean'.
I was reading in one of my redhat books that this command would make linux rered the inittab file but whin I try it I get Bash: init: command not found.
I have an Acer netbook with the netbook version of Ubuntu and Windows 7. When I try to boot on Ubuntu I get a terminal that says "Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." I've found questions about this, but I get lost at "after booting from livecd." I put ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386 on a flash card, but I don't know how to boot from it; I think that's my main problem.
First I installed ubuntu on a separate hard drive and ran that as primary hard drive. Then I opened terminal and entered: sudo fdisk -l The errored hard drive was sdb1. I then entered: sudo fsck /dev/sdb1 There were questions I answered yes to then, after swapping drives, I booted normally. Everything was normal except I have to choose a different version of ubuntu at startup. I haven't had any problems so far but this was just an hour ago.
This is kinda strange, i just installed dhcp3-server in ubuntu 11.04 , but when I try to find the starting script in /etc/init.d/dchp3-server start, it states
bash: /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server: No such file or directory
I have installed the dhcp3-server,howcome there is no script for executing dhcp server?
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting / sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory
