Debian Installation :: Squeeze Networking - Eth0 Doesn't Work
Jan 26, 2011I have installed the Squeeze testing version. i have setup networking for static in the /etc/network/interfaces file. tried to find resolv.conf in the /etc/ since could not find i created this file post trying to start the eth1 i am able to ping my ip, but if try to ping the gateway i get an error saying the ping is not sucessfull. I have 2 network cards, eth0 and eth1. as eth0 does not work i have configured eth1. The dump of the interfaces file is below

The same setup works fine in Ubuntu 10.10 setup that i have.

Feb 11, 2011I just upgraded to Debian 6.0 squeeze 32 bit XFCE from Ubuntu on my old Dell PC. Installation went well, however, i can't get into X windows after reboot, the screen just displays garbage
Specs:
Dell dimension 600Mhz/384M RAM/10G HDD
ATI RAGE pro 128
Any pointers on what should I do?

Mar 8, 2011Last month I installed (not upgrade) squeeze in place of lenny on my dual boot laptop where the other OS is windows 7 Home basic (both C and D drives). I just noticed it today that while I can get any file from the windows to my squeeze I am not permitted to put any file to windows. As far as I remember I was not asked during squeeze installation whether the windows drives would be read-only drives. This difficulty was not faced when I had lenny. Can this problem be remedied now without going through a re-installation?

Mar 15, 2010Since upgrading my laptop to Squeeze, terminals (tested Gnome terminal and xterm) show simply a "$" prompt; machine, path and username are missing. What's really annoying though is that tab completion doesn't work, it inserts a tab character instead. Fooling around showed me that typing in the command "bash" brings everything back to what I'm used to. So in my dire newbiness do I ask, how do I reenable bash as the default shell for these programs?

Jun 17, 2011I use a net install CD to install the Debian 6.0.1(squeeze). After installation of gnome, I use apt install the mplayer. But when I use the mplayer open a avi file, it failed. The mplayer don't crash but give the following instruction:

- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your gcc version. If you thin it's MPlayer's fault, please read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. [This binary of MPlayer in Debian is currently compiled with '--enable-debug'; the debugging symbols are in the package 'mplayer-dbg'.] I don't know why this happen, because all the package is installed with apt.

Jul 9, 2011After using testing (now Wheezy) for almost a year and breaking my machine (latest nvidia broken packages), I went back to vanilla Squeeze (after updates, now at 6.02).Nothing from outside the stable repos; not even the nvidia driver (kept it at default and nouveau)Repo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free" enabled.It seems flash is not working with iceweasel; I either have a message which says "Cannot play media: you do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version," with a link to Adobe's site, of media appears in broken pieces.In order to keep my system "clean," I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe, and a search on this forum suggested installing flashplugin-nonfree or flashplayer-mozilla. Did both (can't have them at the same time), restarted, no joy.

May 24, 2010Previously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

Debian Hardware :: Overclocking Gpu In Squeeze Doesn't Work
Oct 18, 2010Using coolbits allows for me to try to change it but it refuses to accept it, and even when i run it as root it still just acts like nothing has changed. It's not my laptop maker since i can overclock my gpu using rivatuner on windows so it's clearly not them trying to restrict me. I was attempting to restore teh clocks back to what the factory settings were from nvidia and not the underclocked settings that the oem put on it for the 3d settings and then reducing the 2d by ~10% to help it run cooler except when gaming.Has anyone been able to successfully use coolbits in squeeze? Or is there another nvidia overclockign tool out there besides nvclock since my gpu is apparently too new to work with it and i'm not going to risk it.

Feb 14, 2011My net-book is working properly with Debian squeeze 2-6-32-5-686, only the wlan does not work. After typing lsusb I have got the message: lsusb : Bus 002 Device 002 : ID 160a:3184 VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA VNT-6656 [WiFi 802.11b/g USB Dongle]
So I obtained the driver package : VT6656_Linux_src_v1.19_12_x86. I followed the instructions ( make install... ) - but the result is only a lot of error messages. Mayby I am using the wrong driver package for the squeeze kernel - I don't know.

Sep 28, 2010I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?

Feb 18, 2011I just upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and now when I enter startx I get a solid black screen and the computer does not respond to any keyboard input. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Esc, Alt-F2, Alt-F4, etc. all do nothing. No beeps or anything. I have an NVidia graphics card and have been using the proprietary NVidia drivers. I originally thought the problem might be related to this driver but I tried both the nv and vesa drivers and got the same results.
Attached is my Xorg.log.0 file. It just ends after the GLX extension initialization.I am able to use ssh to login after running startx. Running "ps aux" from the remote machine I did not see a process for X. I copied the output below the Xorg.log.0 file.

Aug 3, 2010This problem goes back to when I first purchased my laptop 4 years ago: Dell Precision M90. It came with Vista, but I wanted Ubuntu on instead. In order to get bluetooth to work, I had to downgrade the firmware. This is all fine and means bluetooth works in XP too. However, now, I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and Squeeze, I use Vista drivers (as Dell don't provide 7 drivers) and this has upgraded the firmware, and broken bluetooth in Squeeze. How can I get bluetooth working in both Squeeze and Windows 7? Could changing the hardware help? If so, what to?

Sep 7, 2010I've installed Lenny with no problem, but I tried switching to Squeeze, and grub for some reason didn't pick up on the Windows partition this time - it just shows the two Linux options (debian and debian single-user). I check the menu.lst file (which I've edited under Lenny with no issues), but for some reason it doesn't exist at all in this install. Is it in a different location with Squeeze maybe?
