Debian Installation :: Fresh Install - Upgrade To Frozen Squeeze Distribution

Sep 2, 2010

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.

After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

I haven't used Debian in 1 year or so and would like to know if there is any possible way to do a fresh installation of Debian Lenny or Squeeze (either or) and not install Exim? I get to the package selection section of the Debian Installer and I de-select "Desktop Environment" & "Standard System" so nothing is selected and it still be default installs Exim. Is there a way to omit this from the install?

Debian Installation :: Fresh RAID1 Wheezy Install - GRUB Just Does Not Work

Jul 26, 2014

I have a VIA Epia M 5000 system with 2 western digital 1TB NAS SATA drives connected through SATA<->IDE adapter. Everything installs and writes as expected except... grub. It never boots, after a message 'Grub loading' I always get 'error: no such disk'. I've tried numerous times and has been attemping to fix the issue for the past 2 days.

/dev/sda
0.999TB 0xfd linux raid autodetect partition
1GB 0xfd linux raid autodetect, logical partition

/dev/sdb exactly the same
0.999TB 0xfd linux raid autodetect partition
1GB 0xfd linux raid autodetect

/dev/md0
RAID1 of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1
marked as ext4, boot point /

/dev/md1
RAID1 of /dev/sda5 and /dev/sdb5
marked as swap

update-grub2 in rescue mode generates grub.cfg with SET root=/mduuid/UUID_OF_SDA1
then after that there's search --no-floppy etc --set root=/mduuid/UUID_OF_MD0

I'm writing this from memory but simply the two uuids are different. Is this correct? I get those UUIDs to compare from blkid. All partitions are marked as bootable. grub-install /dev/sda and grub-install /dev/sdb produces no errors. grub-install /dev/md0 does not work, complains about superblocks or something similar.

Grub.cfg file contains insmod raid mdraid1x and similar lines, so that should be ok. Grub drops to rescue mode with message error: no such disk. Not device, but disk. Google finds many results for 'no such device' error, but I am not getting that error. 'ls' produces
(hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) ls ANY_VALID_PATH produces empty newline being printed, nothing more.

setting prefixes manually does not work, with error message 'error: file not found'. ls (hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub also produces empty line being printed. Rescue CD and auto-assemble of md0 and md1 works, the files are there, everything okay, except grub.

Debian :: Setup A Fresh Installation Of Squeeze?

Feb 24, 2011

I've just setup a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and am trying to configure the firewall. I ran a search for iptables and got the following results:

debserv:~# find / -name iptables
/etc/bash_completion.d/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/usr/share/doc/iptables

[Code]....

When I run an iptables command to add a rule and reboot the new configuration is lost even after I have run the iptables-save command. I can't work out where the iptables config file is/should be stored so I could try editing the file with vi.

Ubuntu :: SoftwareRAID Still Work After Fresh Install?

Aug 16, 2010

So apparently RAID configurations on desktops are pretty much worthless using the motherboards internal hardware and BIOS settings. How reliable is the Ubuntu SoftwareRAID? I have 3 HDDs one that I install Ubuntu on and the other two are in a RAID 1 setup strictly for data backup. Will SoftwareRAID be able to pick up where it left off if for some reason I need to do a fresh install of Ubuntu or will I risk losing the data on the RAID 1 drives? I wasnt sure about this since SoftwareRAID is obviously software driven and not hardware driven.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Fresh Install Of 11.04 Work

Apr 30, 2011

I trying to dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 7 on my computer. Here is my problem:

Info:
I used Wubi and ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso.
Main OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Videocard: Nvidia GT 240

Problems (underlined) as they occured:

1) Installed Ubuntu within Windows, rebooted, saw Ubuntu loading screen (with dots) and then I get graphics corruption (it's really bad I can't recognize anything in the screen).

Then I booted in recovery/failsafe graphic mode and I let the installation finish, then automatically rebooted.

2) Let it boot without pressing anything and instead of graphic corruption it boots in terminal.

Tried startx command but it says something relative to "x not found". Then I found out I had to install proprietary Nvidia drivers so I:

3) Booted again in failsafe graphic mode (in recovery mode) and tried to install it but... no internet connection.

I tried "sudo ifconfig eth0 up" and I got: eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

NOTE: If I let it boot itself (terminal) I HAVE internet connection (found out with wget and ping commands).

Ubuntu Installation :: UNR 9.10 Fresh Install On HP 110-1081tu Netbook - No Wireless

Mar 9, 2010

I just got my self a netbook. I bought the one with linux because I figured that if they sell it with linux, it's probably using h/w which supports linux. I played around with the Mi variant it had pre-installed, but it was a bit limited and slow, so I installed UNR instead.The install went fine, and UNR is really nice to use and feels faster than the Mi too which is great. However, wireless isn't working. It's got a broadcom chipset (BCM4312) which I think needs a proprietary driver, but when I use the Hardware drivers tool, it doesn't have any options to install a driver.

Fedora :: Gnome Timed Login Doesn't Work On Fresh 13 Install?

Jul 28, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Code:
[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=<username>
TimedLoginDelay=3

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=<username>

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.

Debian :: Squeeze Upgrade - Tab Completion Does Not Work

Mar 15, 2010

Since upgrading my laptop to Squeeze, terminals (tested Gnome terminal and xterm) show simply a "$" prompt; machine, path and username are missing. What's really annoying though is that tab completion doesn't work, it inserts a tab character instead. Fooling around showed me that typing in the command "bash" brings everything back to what I'm used to. So in my dire newbiness do I ask, how do I reenable bash as the default shell for these programs?

Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze MPlayer Do Not Work

Jun 17, 2011

I use a net install CD to install the Debian 6.0.1(squeeze). After installation of gnome, I use apt install the mplayer. But when I use the mplayer open a avi file, it failed. The mplayer don't crash but give the following instruction:

Mplayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: filter_video
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.

It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your gcc version. If you thin it's MPlayer's fault, please read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. [This binary of MPlayer in Debian is currently compiled with '--enable-debug'; the debugging symbols are in the package 'mplayer-dbg'.] I don't know why this happen, because all the package is installed with apt.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Not Working On Squeeze?

Feb 14, 2011

I am moving over to debian from ubuntu, and the latest install is to an acer aspire one netbook, the wireless card seems to be working and I can see available networks and even connect to mine (with WPA encryption) via the gnome network manager, however opening a browser or pinging both local and external machines all fail. its as if the OS does not not know to use the card. The wired works fine.

If memory serves the card is identified by lspci as Atheros AR5007.

There is no reference to wlan0 in etc/network/interfaces.

I do not have that system on now and have to leave for work, but I can post any further info from conf files etc as required when i get home tonight... Just thought I'd post a quick description in case I'm missing something obvious...

Debian :: Flash Doesn't Work With Iceweasel On Squeeze 6.01?

Jul 9, 2011

After using testing (now Wheezy) for almost a year and breaking my machine (latest nvidia broken packages), I went back to vanilla Squeeze (after updates, now at 6.02).Nothing from outside the stable repos; not even the nvidia driver (kept it at default and nouveau)Repo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free" enabled.It seems flash is not working with iceweasel; I either have a message which says "Cannot play media: you do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version," with a link to Adobe's site, of media appears in broken pieces.In order to keep my system "clean," I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe, and a search on this forum suggested installing flashplugin-nonfree or flashplayer-mozilla. Debian Multimedia :: Upgraded To Squeeze And Now Gnome Won't Work

May 24, 2010

Previously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.

I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

It's not my laptop maker since i can overclock my gpu using rivatuner on windows so it's clearly not them trying to restrict me. I was attempting to restore teh clocks back to what the factory settings were from nvidia and not the underclocked settings that the oem put on it for the 3d settings and then reducing the 2d by ~10% to help it run cooler except when gaming.Has anyone been able to successfully use coolbits in squeeze? Or is there another nvidia overclockign tool out there besides nvclock since my gpu is apparently too new to work with it and i'm not going to risk it.
