I can't seem to get my adapter to work on my Debian Squeeze system. I have the wpc54g linksys notebook adapter and disk... but the disk will not autorun...I have gotten as far as to the adapter being activated, shows connection 97%, but I can't surf!
View 6 Repliesi have ubuntu 10.04 i believe and i cant connect to the intenret i guess its not detecting my wireless adapter. i cant try ethernet cord which prolly would work because i cant move pc to another room....is there any fix for this? i googled linux drivers but i cant find any...i do have the cd that came with the adapter.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
My specs are:
- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

The usb wifi adapter (airdata 150 s2 usb) which I have don't work well. The first time I put it on my computer does not work, so I installed this package [URL] but still not working. Then I search on intenet and found how to make it to work here [URL] that I do is add "blacklist rt2800usb" at the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . After that usb wifi worked, but I have others problems. Some times it disconnect from the Internet and web pages are loading slow and some times do not load at all. Does any one know how I can make it work well? I am using Debian Squeeze.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a Postgres server and after I did the whole installation I realized the Postgres data was set in /usr/pgsql/data. Sda1 is just 10 Gig so I decided to re-organize the partitions to be able to move /usr to say /dev/sda7 with a mount point as /usr. The / partition is on the only primary partition and the rest is on an extended partition. When I tried to resize the primary partition GParted did not give me that possibilty so I decided to move /usr
Original partitions:
sda1 / 10 G on primary partition this includes /usr /var and all others
sda5 swap 2 G on extended partition
sda6 /home 140 G on extended partition
So I did create another partition using Knoppix and Gparted the disk:here is the new picture:
sda1 / 10 G on primary partition this includes /usr /var and all others

I did rsync to copy all the file to /dev/sda7/usr and then mv /dev/sda7/usr* /dev/sda7. I stop the postgres database and services then I mv /dev/sda1/usr to dev/sda1/poufusr . When I rebooted it reports errors from kbd files on /etc File not found. It brings me to a terminal (No GUI) I did a check with :#mount: nothing is reported about sda7
What am I missing ?
I have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:
1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.
I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.

View 10 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading my laptop to Squeeze, terminals (tested Gnome terminal and xterm) show simply a "$" prompt; machine, path and username are missing. What's really annoying though is that tab completion doesn't work, it inserts a tab character instead. Fooling around showed me that typing in the command "bash" brings everything back to what I'm used to. So in my dire newbiness do I ask, how do I reenable bash as the default shell for these programs?

I use a net install CD to install the Debian 6.0.1(squeeze). After installation of gnome, I use apt install the mplayer. But when I use the mplayer open a avi file, it failed. The mplayer don't crash but give the following instruction:
Mplayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: filter_video
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your gcc version. If you thin it's MPlayer's fault, please read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. [This binary of MPlayer in Debian is currently compiled with '--enable-debug'; the debugging symbols are in the package 'mplayer-dbg'.] I don't know why this happen, because all the package is installed with apt.
I am having problem while upgrading system from Squeeze to sid. when I execute the command apt-get dist-upgrade, I got the following o/p:

After using testing (now Wheezy) for almost a year and breaking my machine (latest nvidia broken packages), I went back to vanilla Squeeze (after updates, now at 6.02).Nothing from outside the stable repos; not even the nvidia driver (kept it at default and nouveau)Repo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free" enabled.It seems flash is not working with iceweasel; I either have a message which says "Cannot play media: you do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version," with a link to Adobe's site, of media appears in broken pieces.In order to keep my system "clean," I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe, and a search on this forum suggested installing flashplugin-nonfree or flashplayer-mozilla. Did both (can't have them at the same time), restarted, no joy.

View 11 Replies View RelatedPreviously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

Using coolbits allows for me to try to change it but it refuses to accept it, and even when i run it as root it still just acts like nothing has changed. It's not my laptop maker since i can overclock my gpu using rivatuner on windows so it's clearly not them trying to restrict me. I was attempting to restore teh clocks back to what the factory settings were from nvidia and not the underclocked settings that the oem put on it for the 3d settings and then reducing the 2d by ~10% to help it run cooler except when gaming.Has anyone been able to successfully use coolbits in squeeze? Or is there another nvidia overclockign tool out there besides nvclock since my gpu is apparently too new to work with it and i'm not going to risk it.

My net-book is working properly with Debian squeeze 2-6-32-5-686, only the wlan does not work. After typing lsusb I have got the message: lsusb : Bus 002 Device 002 : ID 160a:3184 VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA VNT-6656 [WiFi 802.11b/g USB Dongle]
So I obtained the driver package : VT6656_Linux_src_v1.19_12_x86. I followed the instructions ( make install... ) - but the result is only a lot of error messages. Mayby I am using the wrong driver package for the squeeze kernel - I don't know.
I have three pc's in the house, one desktop and three laptops. the two windows pc's (windoze 7) worked with dsl and firefox just fine. my linux debian laptop DID give me a network connection, i can log in as admin and change the router/modem ect with no prob. i cant get the default browser in debian to load a page. iceweasel says cant resolve the host name. i have WOW and secondlife installed and both games work fine. i can get a connection on the wireless and play them with no prob. I cant surf the web with any default browser in debian. i have a internet connection. i just cant surf so its got to be in the web browser settings? i looked, did not change anything, but do not see what could be causing this.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just did a Wheezy reinstall (I just started using LVM on LUKS), but my Ralink RT5370 usb wireless adapter wouldn't work, even though I have firmware-ralink installed. When I click on the Network Manager icon, it lists my home network (WPA2 passphrase) as available, but clicking on it yields no result.
Before the system reinstall, I've been using the adapter with firmware-ralink without problems. As far as "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" goes, my system is up-to-date.
I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling firmware-ralink (rebooted too), but to no avail. The adapter seems to be undamaged.

Once in kde, after an undefined time (can be minutes or hours), mouse cursor start to have a fixed shape (if i am in iceweasel on a link, the mouse can get locked with the hand shape). In this state, the mouse cursor can still be moved, but no program can be launched or closed (X) in kde. I still can launch a new console now (ctrl+atl+F2), "ps" don't show any process consuming cpu (all processes are near 0). "sensors" shows 55*C. Other commands as "kill" going to lock, they don't work and at the same time they don't return the cursor to the shell.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI use a Debian Squeeze system running off a flash drive, i.e. based on a custom Live image running in persistent mode. It runs great and I am grateful for the existence of Debian . However, I have a question. A lot of the machines I use this pen drive on are quite old, often with 512 MB RAM and old processors. I specifically built my system using XFCE and lightweight apps off an initial live image using the standard-x11 package list (basically just Xorg with drivers and the base system). At first things ran very well, blazing fast even on the oldest systems and could comfortably run Firefox along with LibreOffice side by side (I need LO as all of my colleagues use Word docs, often with track changes, which Abiword can't handle properly). However, over time, I've found that memory usage has risen, tot he point where Firefox is now automatically killed on the older systems every time I start LibreOffice.how does one figure out why memory usage is going up? I've checked for inessential services and turned them off with "insserv -r". I've used only lightweight apps, as mentioned before. Are there other general tips on reducing memory usage?

I have installed the Squeeze testing version. i have setup networking for static in the /etc/network/interfaces file. tried to find resolv.conf in the /etc/ since could not find i created this file post trying to start the eth1 i am able to ping my ip, but if try to ping the gateway i get an error saying the ping is not sucessfull. I have 2 network cards, eth0 and eth1. as eth0 does not work i have configured eth1. The dump of the interfaces file is below

I installed squeeze and followed the instructions concerning b43-fwcutter and obtained firmware for my broadcom wlan interface. So my wlan worked for a while, but it just ceased functioning, for no obvious reason.

I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?
