If I use -> Connect to Server -> Windows Share then it works well.
How to configure samba server that I can see Windows machines in "Windows Network"?

OpenSUSE Install :: Multiboot With 11.2, Mint And Windows 7

Jun 8, 2010

I am using Opensuse 11.2 for the last few days, and I absolutely love it!! I have a dual boot system at the moment, with OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows7. However, i want to make space for another Linux OS for testing purpose.

More precisely, I have 750 GB hdd space. Windows 7 in C Drive (40 gb ntfs) and OpenSuse has like 30 GB for itself. Rest of the partitions hold data. I want to use one of the empty partitions for another Linux distro. Presently for Linux Mint. This partition may be rotated with other distros later, but i intend to keep Opensuse permanently.

My Question is, if i install Mint now, will its grub configure Opensuse and Windows7 into the loader automatically or will i need to manually change something? I do not want to lose my OpenSuse installation, neither Win7.

Also, is it necessary to have a common /home partition, or can the 2 distros have their own /home partitions? I'll proceed with the install only after i get a go ahead from here (with instructions )

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Multiboot .04 From Windows XP Bootloader

Jun 1, 2010

I am trying to install Ubuntu10.04 on my machine which already has on it, Win XP. Lemme lay down the setup of my machine first of all.

I got a new 320GB HDD of which I have taken 20GB as the primary partition and installed Win XP on it. Took another 220GB as an extended partition for my data storage. Around 63GB was remaining which I left it as unallocated. Decided to try Ubuntu, but preferred to boot it from the windows bootloader. Downloaded and burned the Ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso(have a AMD x3 425 machine) and tried an install on 30GB of the 63 left.

I did not try any partition scheme. I chose the manual partition option, made a 28GB ext4 partition, made it primary, mounted the /, took another 2GB for the swap and proceeded. Chose advanced option and installed grub on the 28GB(/dev/sda6) and completed the installation.

Since no grub was installed, Ubuntu was not available. So then, used the bootpart utility to point grub to the windows bootloader, but it did not work, was giving me error when I chose Ubuntu from the bootmenu modified by the bootpart.

So tried booting with the same install cd, chose Live Ubuntu this time and mounted the 28GB, copied the first 512bytes using dd if=/dev/sda6 of=ubuntu bs=512 count=1 to a usb drive. Rebooted into windows and copied the file to C: and added it to the boot.ini. Rebooted and tried choosing Ubuntu from the boot menu but it does not work. I get a blank screen with the cursor blinking.

The machine is new and BIOS is LBA enabled by auto.

Debian Installation :: Transfer Files From Squeeze Platform To Windows?

Mar 8, 2011

Last month I installed (not upgrade) squeeze in place of lenny on my dual boot laptop where the other OS is windows 7 Home basic (both C and D drives). I just noticed it today that while I can get any file from the windows to my squeeze I am not permitted to put any file to windows. As far as I remember I was not asked during squeeze installation whether the windows drives would be read-only drives. This difficulty was not faced when I had lenny. Can this problem be remedied now without going through a re-installation?

Debian Configuration :: X Windows Blank / Frozen After Upgrade To Squeeze

Feb 18, 2011

I just upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and now when I enter startx I get a solid black screen and the computer does not respond to any keyboard input. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Esc, Alt-F2, Alt-F4, etc. all do nothing. No beeps or anything. I have an NVidia graphics card and have been using the proprietary NVidia drivers. I originally thought the problem might be related to this driver but I tried both the nv and vesa drivers and got the same results.

Attached is my Xorg.log.0 file. It just ends after the GLX extension initialization.I am able to use ssh to login after running startx. Running "ps aux" from the remote machine I did not see a process for X. I copied the output below the Xorg.log.0 file.

Ubuntu :: XONAR DS Multiboot With Windows - Unable To Get Sound

Jun 27, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and set up ALSA and got my DS working perfectly.I booted back into Windows with the intention of playing some BC2, and discovered anytime sound tries to play, it's all screwed (I can still make out some of what is being said but it's pretty bad). Naturally my first reaction would be to go into the Xonar audio center, which I did, and made sure nothing was wrong there. I changed settings around (sample rate and changing from headphone to 2 channel) but nothing worked. Turned off the D3SD GX and that didn't work either. Removed the drivers, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted. No change.

One thing I noticed is under the Windows sound control panel it doesn't show I'm playing anything when I am. However when I go into advanced and use the test option (and set it to the highest option available) it sounds fine.Under Ubuntu it also sounds fine. I've got volume set to around 50% in Ubuntu. I noticed when I muted it under Ubuntu and rebooted it was muted under Windows, hence my thought that the volume settings were messing things up. Didn't work though.Pulled the card out and left it out for a few minutes worked. Quite strange.

Debian Hardware :: Bluetooth Firmware With Windows 7/Squeeze Dual Boot?

Aug 3, 2010

This problem goes back to when I first purchased my laptop 4 years ago: Dell Precision M90. It came with Vista, but I wanted Ubuntu on instead. In order to get bluetooth to work, I had to downgrade the firmware. This is all fine and means bluetooth works in XP too. However, now, I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and Squeeze, I use Vista drivers (as Dell don't provide 7 drivers) and this has upgraded the firmware, and broken bluetooth in Squeeze. How can I get bluetooth working in both Squeeze and Windows 7? Could changing the hardware help? If so, what to?

Debian :: Squeeze Grub Doesn't Detect Windows Partition On Install?

Sep 7, 2010

I've installed Lenny with no problem, but I tried switching to Squeeze, and grub for some reason didn't pick up on the Windows partition this time - it just shows the two Linux options (debian and debian single-user). I check the menu.lst file (which I've edited under Lenny with no issues), but for some reason it doesn't exist at all in this install. Is it in a different location with Squeeze maybe?

why grub didn't pick up on my Windows install?

OpenSUSE Install :: Multiboot Opensuse And Windows 7 With Windows Bootloader?

Jun 8, 2011

I installed opensuse in my laptop in which I already installed opensuse. Now the grub shows first, on boot up. I want to set windows bootloader in front. In order to do that, I did the following,

1. unmount all devices "umount /windows/*"
2. my hard disk partition:- see the link cfdisk /dev/sda | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
3. mount the C drive (where win 7 is installed)
"ntfs-3g /dev/sda3 /mnt/windows -o force "
4. dd if=/dev/sda8 of=/mnt/windows/suse.bin bs=512 count=1
5. kwrite /mnt/windows/boot.ini and write the following,

[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)c: suse.bin
[operating systems]
c: suse.bin="openSUSE"

6. change the boot to sda3 using "sudo /sbin/cfdisk /dev/sda"

Problem is,

now windows bootloader shows when boot up, showing two options,
windows
openSUSE

windows option works normally; but openSUSE option doesn't work.

Is this possible, usinga startup install CD for on-line installation of Squeeze over the Lenny partitions, and also without disturbing the Windows and Fedora boots? - I've tried installing a theme into my /home/.themes.

- I've reinstalled gnome-settings-daemon.

- Tried changing themes then doing a full reboot.

- Cursed it periodically.

Debian :: Installing Command Line Debian Squeeze System On Eee PC 701

May 29, 2011

I have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:

1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.

I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.
