Debian :: Squeeze Grub Doesn't Detect Windows Partition On Install?

I've installed Lenny with no problem, but I tried switching to Squeeze, and grub for some reason didn't pick up on the Windows partition this time - it just shows the two Linux options (debian and debian single-user). I check the menu.lst file (which I've edited under Lenny with no issues), but for some reason it doesn't exist at all in this install. Is it in a different location with Squeeze maybe?
I installed Debian on a old hard drive (quantum 5gb) and ran with it for a couple of days.. BUT all my data (including windows) is on my other hard drive.. so my question is What do I have to do to make grub detect windows and linux when I attach the 2-nd hard drive?
I recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.
i had windows 7 on my system and now i installed debian squeeze but grub does not show my windows 7 in menu for selecting how could repair this problem?
My attempts to "dist-upgrade" Lenny to Squeeze ended in disaster. My story is that it was caused by a bug in the "release notes instructions".

I would now like to reformat the HD-partition that currently contains the failed "upgrade" and see if I do any better by starting from scratch; it is about 6 years since I have last undertaken such a task and my memories are hazy.
The relevant entry in the Debian (Install) Manual reads:
6.3.2.3. Manual Partitioning A similar screen to the one shown just above will be displayed if you choose manual partitioning except that your existing partition table will be shown and **without the mount points**.
My question is:
At what point in the "clean install" does the Debian Installer (set at "medium"?) ask for the "mount point" at which the "root directory of Squeeze" is to be installed?
I just installed squeeze on a raid 1 set of partitions via netinst. gde works fine. I have installed kdm and all of its dependencies (I believe), but when I select it and log in, I see the kde startup screen for a moment, then it goes blank, and goes back to the login screen. I recently purchased a new Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and am having problems installing the latest version of Squeeze from CD. After receiving the laptop, I started it up, configured Windows 7, and confirmed everything is working correctly. Next I went through the Debian installer, which completed successfully. I'll be dual-booting Windows 7 and Debian, so at the partitioning stage I resized my NTFS partition, added a shared VFAT partition, then used the "Guided" install to create my root and swap partitions. I assumed something was wrong with grub, so I booted the CD into rescue mode and chose to reinstall grub onto the Master Boot Record. But nothing changed. Just to experiment, I went into fdisk, deleted all my new partitions (leaving just the Windows ones), and tried rebooting, but the same error happened. I then went through the Debian installer again, being careful to set everything up correctly, but still, the device won't boot.
I'm not even getting to the grub boot screen, so something is wrong even before the point. Reinstalling grub to the Master Boot Record (grub-install /dev/sda) isn't changing anything. How can I troubleshoot this?
I am trying to dual boot Windows and Linux. I would like to continue using the Windows bootloader in my MBR.
I installed Windows 7 first. During the install I left some unallocated space that I intended to install Linux.

It says to install GRUB to the bootsector of the partition that Linux is being installed to and not the MBR of your hard drive.
I am trying to install Linux Mint Debian to the second partition. When the installer gets to where you are asked to install GRUB the only option is to install GRUB to /dev/sda which I believe is the MBR.
I decided just not to install GRUB and proceeded with the installation.
How can I install GRUB to the bootsector of my Linux partition?
recently i installed ubuntu 10.10 and now when i start my computor i dont see windows xp in the grub bootloader anymore. (it worked fine for 10.04) my brother as well has had the same problem.
i install devian squeeze with the netinstall iso, all work fine except for the auto-detect of my ethernet card.i have a mother asrock p4i45gv with an onboard ethernet card realtek rtl8139/810x family fast ethernet NIC.i try everithing, the ifconfig shows only lo, but ifconfig -a shows a eth0 any ideas?
I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista.Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.
A few days ago my Laptop wouldn't hibernate in Windows 7, I managed to fix this problem by going into Windows' Disk Management tool and setting the C:/ Partition as the active partition, this fixed my hibernation issue, however I have just noticed that now when I boot my laptop my GRUB menu no longer appears, instead it just loads Windows straight away as if it was the only OS on my laptop.
I've confirmed it's something to do with my recent Disk Management change as I booted up GParted, removed the boot flag from Windows and when a rebooted my GRUB menu reappeared.
Not sure on how I can both have Windows as the active partition while being able to keep GRUB working also.

I have a problem: my notebook (NOTEBOOK SATELLITE L300-SP5917A - INTEL CORE 2 DUO T6400 (2.00 GHZ - 2 MB L2 - 800MHZ FSB) - 15.4 WIDESCREEN TRUBRITE TFT LCD - 400 GB SATA 2 .5 5400 RPM - 3GB PC2-6400 DDR2) doesn't boot ubuntu after the last security upgrade. I have wubi installed.I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu in the boot menu. I select "Ubuntu" and that leads me to the GRUB shell. I'm new in linux. It seems that GRUB doesn't detect the kernel. Maybe the file menu.lst has been deleted, or something similar, but I can't make my ubuntu to boot.
Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system.The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?
I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 and it is currently setup on a system running 2 SCSI drives with an adaptec 2940 UW (non RAID) PCI card both are 18.4 GB. Windows XP is installed on the first one and I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto the second, but the installation doesn't recognize that windows is installed on the first drive and only gives me that drive as an option to install... Gparted recognizes both, one as an NTFS file system (sdb) and the second as a unpartitioned drive (sdc) and for some reason is placing the usb drive as sda which i'm assuming might cause some issues with grub boot loader later on after the drive is removed. what might be causing this issue and how i would go about fixing it... should i just go to 10.04 and upgrade to 11.04 after?
i did a fresh install of 10.04 on my asus 1005ha netbook (first-gen 1005ha, if it matters), and it works great. However, grub does NOT detect my windows partition. In gparted, the partition is recognized as "unknown". I can't mount it in ubuntu.

My windows 7 is not corrupted. it is also not virus-infected. I know what i am doing, and i know my windows is fine. it has been running fine prior to installing ubuntu. I'm just saying this becuz i noticed that viruses are a common response to similar problems like this.
i have a windows xp OS installed on C and on D ubuntu 64bit ! and i disabled from windows to see the booting manager where it shows me weather to choose Windows or ubuntu ! and the GURB menu , when it comes up i cant see windows !
Note: i tried the sudo update-gurb this or wtever command was it ! but also failed to show windows
I have XP and win 7. I want to triple boot with Debian.When I install, grub finds win 7 and XP and says everything should be fine, but then when I boot, only debian appears.This was fixed by doing update-grub2 after logging in.Now, I have win 7 bootloader as an option. However, when I boot into XP, and then reboot, grub disappers. he screen just says welcome to grub and then a blinking cursor.
I've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this: - is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or - did I do something wrong in the install process? or - is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
I installed Ubuntu using Wubi, and the boot loader does not detect my keyboard. Does the windows boot loader only support PS2 keyboards? Would there be a workaround... like install DOS drivers for it? I have a logitech s520 keyboard.
When in Windows, I can select what OS to use, but is there a way I can select which OS to use while booted into Ubuntu? Is there a program that will let me modify the windows boot loader from within Ubuntu?
I have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.
I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.

I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
I just purchased a Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset. It works fine in Windows but unfortunately the same can't be said for Linux. It doesn't even seem to be detected as when I use the command cat /proc/bus/input/devices I get
I checked Volume control and I have Headphone checked, and in switched Headphone is also checked. Actually... Maybe it is being detected... In the Device dropdown menu in Volume control I see "Logitech USB Headset". I checked that and the volume is turned up, speaker and microphone are selected in preferences... Sound is still coming out of my monitor's speakers though.
Debian Jessie does not detect one of my monitors (I have two) when I use the default drivers (nouveau) for my NVIDIA graphics card. It does work when I install the proprietary drivers, but then, after a couple of reboots, I get many problems (when I log in, it does not manage to load the desktop environment). I've tried this a couple of times unsuccessfully.
How to make the machine recognize the dual screen with the default drivers?
