Debian Configuration :: X Windows Blank / Frozen After Upgrade To Squeeze

Feb 18, 2011

I just upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and now when I enter startx I get a solid black screen and the computer does not respond to any keyboard input. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Esc, Alt-F2, Alt-F4, etc. all do nothing. No beeps or anything. I have an NVidia graphics card and have been using the proprietary NVidia drivers. I originally thought the problem might be related to this driver but I tried both the nv and vesa drivers and got the same results.

Attached is my Xorg.log.0 file. It just ends after the GLX extension initialization.I am able to use ssh to login after running startx. Running "ps aux" from the remote machine I did not see a process for X. I copied the output below the Xorg.log.0 file.

Debian Installation :: Fresh Install - Upgrade To Frozen Squeeze Distribution

Sep 2, 2010

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.

After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

Debian Configuration :: Blank Java Window On Squeeze?

Sep 1, 2010

I have two systems, both running Squeeze, one (desktop) executes Java applications perfectly while the other (laptop) doesn't.

I found two small examples:
http://www.x2d.org/java/projects/fluffschack.jnlp
works well on both systems

[Code]....

All the online Java tests I have found tells me that all is fine. I've browsed around quite a bit, and some are suggesting incompatibilities between Java and certain display drivers, but unsure of how to proceed.

Debian Configuration :: Sloow Nfs After Upgrade To Squeeze?

Aug 22, 2010

1) old a1300 laptop: P3 800, 256 MiB RAM, HDD, PC-CARD NIC. from lspci: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10) with debian (i386), previously lenny, now squeeze. running as server.

[Code]...

Smaller files seem to transfer faster, but I have no idea why. I've checked with ethtool that both NICs are running at 1000Mb/s, and both are connected to the same Gigabit switch. The HDD in the laptop had previously provided (nfs) transfer speeds of 12-13 MiB/s. The options in fstab on the client are what I've changed them to since, while trying to fix the problem. Can't remember exactly what they were, but rsize, wsize and nfsvers are some I put there trying to fix it.

I had considered buying a new, faster HDD for the laptop, but that is certainly out of the question until this is resolved. Edit: Is this the right place to ask about this? I did wonder if the 'General Questions' category was a better fit.

Debian Configuration :: WLAN Disappears With Upgrade Of Squeeze?

Feb 9, 2011

My version of Squeeze was about half a year old when I updated/upgraded it just now. As part of the (longish) process I was advised to run apt-get autoremove, which removed what looked like a stunning amount of material. As another part I noticed a huge number of error messages about nonexistent locale files (I think) whizzing by.

Well, the result has various cosmetic changes and no doubt fewer bugs, but it doesn't have WLAN. I used to see an icon at the top right like two tadpoles chasing each other, turning into a set of green (if I was lucky) or grey (if not) bars. No longer. No tadpoles, no bars, no error message, nothing.

This very recent thread ("Just isntall debian 6.0, wired networking ok but no wireless") looks helpful. However, I don't know what WLAN hardware I've got or how to get a text dump of this kind of thing. 4D696B65 kindly points the person who asked to wiki.debian.org/ipw2200. I don't know whether I have any of these "Intel PRO/Wireless 2100, 2200 and 2915 devices" but I'm encouraged to read there that [the file] is now also available in the nonfree-firmware tarball which we build regularly on cdimage.debian.org. Supply this blob on a CD/floppy/USB drive etc. and d-i will do the right thing. I don't know what either "blob" or "d-i" means, but I was rather hoping that some software or other would look at the hardware, look at the available firmware, and install accordingly (as happened months ago). So got the (small) file; I opened it up; I copied the contents to a CD (even though it's not an ISO). But apt-cdrom add is not interested.

Debian Configuration :: Recommended To Upgrade From Etch To Squeeze?

Mar 2, 2011

I am running a server that has Etch on it. I have only recently been given this responsibility as I am the "IT-guy". I am running postifx, squid, shorewall, courier, samba and other things. The network has about 75 users with emails and data. I do not want to do anything that would risk their data and emails getting lost.

Is it still recommended that I upgrade to Lenny and then Squeeze?

Debian Configuration :: No Longer Connect To The Wireless Network After Squeeze Upgrade

Apr 17, 2011

I upgraded from lenny to squeeze on a notebook and I can no longer connect to the wireless network. The computer is an LG notebook and the network card is ralink rt2860. I am using Gnome and NetworkManager. The wireless key is WEP hex. It was working fine with lenny till before the upgrade. After the upgrade, the network card stopped working. So, I checked

$ lspci|grep Network
08:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2860

Then I reinstalled the driver with apt-get install firmware-ralink wireless-tools Then the network manager tray started working again and saw the network, but cannot connect. It was trying to connect but timed out and kept asking for the password. It is the correct password. I tried deleting the old connection and recreated a new one in the nm. But still does not work.

Debian Installation :: Grab Multi Arch Netinstall Of Both Lenny 5.0.5 And Latest Frozen Squeeze

I mean there's no freaking "downloads" section that is split into testing and stable with links to the mirrors and such. I want to grab a multi-arch netinstall of both Lenny 5.0.5 and the latest, frozen Squeeze. I cannot find either. In other words, I'd have to burn six CDs instead of two. Not happening. Can somebody point me to the images that I am seeking?

Debian Installation :: Dual Boot XP / Squeeze - Blank Screen With J On Restart

May 8, 2010

I've had Windows XP Home installed on my netbook (Toshiba NB205) and I've just tried to install squeeze via net install. In particular, I installed grub. Everything seemed to go ok during the installation, but when I boot up, all that appears is a blank screen with nothing but at "j" and a cursor. One thing I can think of that might offer a clue, is that when asked to installed grub, the installer said it recognized two operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP Home, and Windows NT/XP. The latter is not really an operating system, but the backup partition.

I don't know how this might affect grub's functioning. What does this "j" mean? Looking at this: [URL]. Could this have some thing to do with boot flag? Should I switch it to my NTFS partition instead of my root partition? Doing that at least let's me boot into Windows. But that's not what I want. I've never dual booted before. So I booted back up with my USB, intending to reinstall Debian, and it loaded grub instead. So apparently grub is now on my USB. Then it booted me into Debian.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze D-u - Kernel Configuration Skipped

Jul 6, 2010

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.

I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.

I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.

So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.

However, just in case someone else runs into this:

1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.

2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

After display all the code above, it just stops. The port 5901 is still closed - if it runs properly, would it open automatically? Is there something that is incompatible? Or am I missing some system configuration component?

Debian Configuration :: Using Tor In Squeeze?

Aug 28, 2011

When I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".

I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.

What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.

Debian :: Trying Out Squeeze / Configuration Could Not Be Loaded

Dec 14, 2010

A couple days ago I installed Debian Lenny (netinst) to my friend's laptop, a IBM Thinkpad T23. Got a black screen after gdm loaded and the laptop seemed frozen. Decided to upgrade to squeeze. I edited the apt sources file and changed all the instances of lenny to squeeze, and then upgraded.Had the same display problem, but found a web site that suggested disabling acpi. So I did that, got the sound working, (needed cs46xx firmware), and all seems to be running fine.I get some weird udev messages at boot time, but I have a feeling that's due to how I upgraded. I can't copy and paste since the messages aren't in my system log. If anybody wants more information about it, I can supply it. pgrep shows two instances of udev running so it appears the messages are only warnings. When upgrading to squeeze, I used tds.net debian mirror links. Earlier today I switched to Debian's official US repo URLs and had to upgrade about 250 packages after reloading package data.

Now, when I click on System -> Administration -> Time and Date. After a couple seconds I get a dialog box that says "The configuration data could not be loaded" in bold black letters. Underneath that in smaller letters, "You are not allowed to access the system configuration" I receive that same error when accessing "services" and "users and groups."But I can access the synaptic package manager and update manager from the administration submenu.

Debian Configuration :: Screen Goes Blank During Boot On 8.1

Jun 18, 2015

I have this machine (motherboard ITX Jetaway NF94-270-LF based on CPU Atom N270, full specs here) as a server for some time now (about 4 years). Debian 8.1 is installed on it.

Two days ago, after a power failure, the machine was not able to complete the boot process. I attached a keyboard and a monitor (on VGA port, the motherboard also as a DVI one, but I don't have a suitable monitor) to be able to see what's happening and interact with the machine. Unluckily, at a certain point during the booting sequence the screen goes blank and the monitor goes in standby mode; apart from that, the boot process continues in the background.

As far as I can recall, this behaviour existed for at least a couple of years (if not from the beginning) and the boot process was always completed successfully until two days ago.

The screen goes blank after the setup of the keyboard mapping. I tried everything to avoid the screen going blank: in the Grub menu I set the "vga" parameter, the "nomodeset" parameter, the grub_gfxmode parameter, I removed the "quiet" option, I removed the "load_video" line, I forced the BIOS to only use the VGA port for the video and so on, in order to disable or configure differently the video and the framebuffer. All these stuff had no effect at all: the screen keeps going blank at the same point during the boot process.

The only way I was able to use a fully booted system through keyboard and monitor was via the rescue mode of the Debian 8.1 netinst image. But that way, of course, I wasn't able to observe the normal boot process. So, I checked the boot parameters of the rescue mode and I found that the only usefull parameter was "vga", which I already used and was ineffective.

Debian Configuration :: Missing CD / DVD Device In Squeeze

Apr 3, 2010

I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.
