I'm running Debian Squeeze on my laptop my laptop speakers do not work but when i plug in something into the headphone jack I then have sound (to the speakers plugged into my headphone jack).

I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.
Summary of some settings (transposed manually)

Im running Jessie, and have run into issue with my laptop sound card.
If is shutdown the laptop with the headphones plugged in, and remove them while its off, system wont recognize they are not there any more and is probably sending sound out to this output. To get the sound out to my laptop speakers I need to plug the headphones while the system is up, and remove them again. Only then will the output device work properly.

I am using Dell Vostro 1520 with Debian Lenny installed. My problem is that I am getting sound through both my headphone and laptop speakers. But it works fine in Windows XP.

And everytime I reboot I have no sound and manually have to do 'alsaconf'.For information about what I have done: I have only 'su' to root and put 'alsaconf'.It detected my soundcard and the sound works but only the front ones. As I am new to debian(I have installed debian lenny), I would greatly appreciate any help as to what should I do.On googling around I found that I have to edit some "asound" file.
View 11 Replies View RelatedFor many years I used KDE and loved it. After Ubuntu appeared and got popular I decided to give Gnome a try as I figured that it must be OK if they used it in Ubuntu (and selected as the default desktop in Debian). I missed out on all the wailing and gnashing that accompanied the release of early versions of KDE 4. I've been using Gnome ever since and I have a really nice setup on squeeze - Chrome for browsing, Geany for development, Gnote for notes, Evolution for offline Gmail and Google calendars.
In fact, it's probably because Gnome is working so well for me right now that the geek in me fancies having a bit of a tinker with KDE. I keep reading that version 4 has now matured enough for production use. The only thing that puts me off is the sheer number of packages I need to install. I'm going to end up with a right mess in my menus etc, but still it might be worth it. What do you reckon - should I just stick with my nice Gnome desktop or should I dip my toe back into KDE? (or go for l33t status and install Xfce) I've got a thinkpad T400 with integrated intel graphics.
I could not get the hardware to work with Lenny's ancient drivers, so I gave up and decided to upgrade to Squeeze.Well, the hardware works (except sound), but KDE4 is a such a disaster that I want to run not walk! all the way back to Lenny. I'm stunned that after four years of active development, this desktop still doesn't have something as basic as keyboard shortcuts or the ability to place icons where YOU want them.
The widgets frustrate me to no end. The new K menu is impossible to navigate. I'd rather hang myself than use Dolphin as a file manager. KDE4 gives me more notifications than MS Windows' crapware. And it's UGLY !!! The "Oxygen" theme makes me want to tear my eyeballs out.
I have successful installed debian squeeze 32bit on my pc. I like very much The vlc i have installed via software but After install vlc don't start don't appear don't do nothing any one know there is a problem with Vlc On squeeze?

(I cannot test it myself, since it's my brother who recently bought a new nVidia card)
I use a net install CD to install the Debian 6.0.1(squeeze). After installation of gnome, I use apt install the mplayer. But when I use the mplayer open a avi file, it failed. The mplayer don't crash but give the following instruction:
Mplayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: filter_video
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your gcc version. If you thin it's MPlayer's fault, please read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. [This binary of MPlayer in Debian is currently compiled with '--enable-debug'; the debugging symbols are in the package 'mplayer-dbg'.] I don't know why this happen, because all the package is installed with apt.
When I play audio, the sound comes only out of the laptop speakers, not the headphones that are plugged in. I downloaded ALSA mixer and nothing on it seems to help, although at the top in the middle it says Intel IbexPeak HDMI, which I guess is my sound card.
View 11 Replies View RelatedPreviously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

When I had Lenny installed I made this computer be my alarm clock (with sanduhr) to wake me up for school in addition to my mom's TV (because I am a heavy sleeper) and now I cannot use this computer to do so. I'm not saying it's a bug. I'm just asking, how do I enable it again? I know that with Lenny to enable/disable beeping, I went to System=>Preferences=>Sound but now I don't see how to make beeping work again.

I have checked alsamixer and pulseaudio nothing is muted, tried all sort of different combinations and pulseaudio actually sees that mplayer for example is playing music, or skype is in videocall and using the sound device, but nothing is coming out of the speakers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed squeeze (kernel 2.6.32-3-686 now) on an old Amilo M-6100 laptop with a Silicon Motion graphic chip. I've installed Slim and LXDE but Xorg won't start properly. Apparently it doesn't recognize the screen and tries to apply a wrong resolution, no matter what I do. Also, if I try Xorg -configure, I get stuck with a black screen .
I tried to copy-paste data from a xorg.conf file from there: [URL], to no avail.

I am running Debian Squeeze on a laptop and I cannot get sound to work on it. It detects theres 2 sound cards in alsamixer and under cards i see HDA-Intel - HA ATI SB and HDA ATI SB at 0x90400000 irq 16. I think HDA-Intel is suppose to be selected not what is currently selected which is HDA ATI SB. If thats not an issue I'm not sure what is and I've tried reinstalling Squeeze and it still hasn't fixed the issue.

I don't know why and when exactly this happened, but now when the stereo is connected, i get sound from the laptop speakers and stereo speakers simultaneously.Is this a bug? I'd like to mute only my laptop speakers but haven't figured out how. I've tried every setting in "sound" or "audio" or whatever it's called in english, but to no avail.Any ideas how to turn off the laptop speakers?

I have a hp 500 laptop(quite old) and when i plug in the headphones it plays sound from both the headphones and the laptop speakers. This doesn't happen when i'm using windows xp. if there are any threads about this please direct me to them if not give me advice on what to do.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.

Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.
I looked around the settings on Ubuntu and I cannot prevent sound from being played on my laptop speakers when external (more powerful) speakers are plugged in. Windows automatically defers all sound output to the external ones as soon as it is plugged in.

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my buddy's laptop. It's working alright, except when we try to plug the external computer speakers into the sound jack in the front, there is no change; it keeps playing through the onboard speakers. My friend and I are getting pretty frustrated because we use those speakers to watch movies with, and the onboard speakers aren't sufficient. If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.
