CentOS 5 Hardware :: Sound Card Not Detected On Boot When USB Headphones Plugged In?

Mar 23, 2010

If I boot CentOS (5, up to date) without my USB headphones are plugged in, all sound output goes to the sound card. But if I have the headphones plugged in when I boot, all output goes to them, and the sound card does not seem to be recognised at all.

Is there any way I can force the sound card to be recognised, and chosen as the default device, when booting with the headphones plugged in? If I have booted with the headphones plugged in, and then I unplug them, go into System|Preferences|Sound, and press the Test button with sound playback set to autodetect, I get a dialog with the message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

Then I started System|Administration|Soundcard detection, and it detected both Intel and Radeon sound cards, but its test button did not produce any sound for either. I moved the Intel device to the top of the list in the Settings tab, and then ran "Reload audio drivers" in the System tab. I got an error message saying I needed to reboot, but I didn't. At this point, the test buttons in the Sound test tab, and in System|Preferences|Sound started working OK. Do I have to go through this rigmarole every time I boot with the headphones plugged in?

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Graphics Card Not Detected?

May 8, 2009

I got Linux Ubuntu because my Vista installation messed up, and I couldnt find the recovery CD. Im pretty glad I installed Linux, as it seems really freidnly, and a bit more open that Windows, I must admit. The problem is, I am trying to install my Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS on the system, and it isnt working. It was working fine on Vista before, so it shouldnt be a hardware problem. I have followed various instructions on websites, whioch take me throguh some stuff about stopping GNOME, removing * linux restricted module * and so on. But when I get to the crucial point, with the agreements and installations for Nvidia, it tells me it cant detect any graphics cards.

Hardware :: Nvidia MCP61 Chipset Variant + Alsa-base.conf?

Jul 24, 2010

Just wondering if anyone could tell me how the models in alsa-base.conf ( see model list here )are configured. My issue is: My volume is extremely low. I have tried telling alsa to load profile for 3stack and 6stack configurations. However, most of the models listed for acer seem to be laptops. In my case I am running a ACER aspire ASE380 I have tried a few of the acer model listings with moderate success. My system is running ALC888 ( is it possible that its being identified incorrectly by the system? ) with 6 analog stack + 1 optic + 1 coax + 1 front mic + 1 front head-phone. I am wondering how the models differ from each other in the conf files. Can any one tell me where to look?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Card Is Not Detected

Jul 17, 2010

I am attempting to get ubuntu working on my system.I have tried on previous systems without success, hopefully it works out this time.Currently my only major issue with it is I cannot get any sounds to play.I use a Logitech G35 usb headset and onboard audio (GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H motherboard, Realtek ALC892 audio chipset).Ideally, I'd like to be able to listen from either source, though just getting one working would be great.Ubuntu is currently not detecting any sound.

Using aplay -l, it said no sound card found. Using lspci -v, so sound devices were listed.I am a complete noob to ubuntu, I had to research to figure out what to do with 'aplay -l' (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal, type command in terminal). My Windows troubleshooting skills seem largely useless in a Linux environment.

Hardware :: Integrated Sound Card Not Detected (Ubuntu)

Apr 8, 2010

I have a DFI RS482 mobo with integrated sound. I am making a car puter and only have a 2GB CF card, so I installed a server install of Ubuntu. Then I got xserver-xorg, mplayer, and fluxbox. I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia driver. Mplayer spit out tons of sound errors and that's when I realized the server install has no sound. So I installed the 'alsa', 'pulseaudio' and 'pavucontrol' packages. Now mplayer does not complain and acts like it is playing sound, but nothing happens sound-wise. Pavucontrol shows mplayer as playing sound and the volume as unmuted. However the PCM output is going to "dummy output" and the configuration tab says there are no cards to be configured.

So I think my sound card is not being detected. I don't know what to do at this point.
lspci shows "Multimedia audio controler: ATI Technologies inc. IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 80)"
alsamixer fails on "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory"
lsmod | grep 97 returns a bunch of stuff, but I'm not sure what it is.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Edit And Sound Card Not Detected

Aug 6, 2010

I'm a Linux noob, so please go easy on me! I've been desperate to get rid of my Windows install for a while now and have finally started to make the move over, but have a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 install. I've scoured the help documentation and forum for days now without managing to resolve my problem, and have finally resorted to posting my problem. So I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.

1 Installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Viglen Furtura S200) but the only way I have been able to get it to install and boot properly is edit the GRUB with the following acpi=off i915.modeset xforcevesa. I had to add these parameters even to boot the live CD as well. I think I'm right in assuming that this is forcing the use of a generic graphics driver, consequently leaving some visual features unavailable. I'm not really sure what turning acpi off is doing. Is it possible to resolve this? Is this the cause of problem number 2?

2 After install there is no sound. Sound preferences shows no hardware and ALSAmixer is empty when opened. I have followed the sound troubleshooting through and it looks like my sound card is actually being picked up on the board, but I fall at the point of checking the loaded ALSA Modules as my report shows that none are loaded?!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Sound Card Probs And Others?

Apr 10, 2010

I have 3 problems here that are kind of rolled into one. I will explain. They refer to my HDA Nvidia ALC 888 Sound card, Various software that comes bundled with new digital cameras, and drivers for my blood/sugar meter connected to the PC. (I am diabetic).

Senario:----- I am an experianced Windows user and have lately been looking into Linux. Having made up my mind to go for Ubuntu, I had a transition period where I was running both os. I am now pleased to say that I am now windows free and running totally Linux Ubuntu.

My problems are with the drivers for the above devices. In Windows (7) all of the devices ran perfectly, The sound card worked superbly with dolby and a host of other options. In Linux, the same sound card I dont think was picked up. It is as if I have just a generic driver giving me sound. I am still getting good sound, dont get me wrong but it just does not have that extra bite that I know the HDA Nvidia ALC 888 can produce. That I believe is the hardest question to solve..... Phew!

The other 2 are both very connected. One is the numerous software that comes bundled with new digital cameras that I have a habit of buying and the other is the software to my Roche Industries Blood/Sugar meter. I have phones Roche and they told me straight that their software does not run on Linux or Mac. As for the camera software, there are too many to mention here.

Given the 3 problems, would it be suggested I find a space on my h/d to re-install Win 7 for the said items as then I could still keep Linux as my main os. I would then have to go into Windows to play music for the real rich sound? Or, is there something I can do to get full use of my sound card in Linux?

I have been looking for 3 days now on various parts of this forum and though I have found several interesting posts, I have found none relevant to my case. I read that I could try to use OSS, I barely know what that means, if I am running it or how I get it and if I can get it how do I switch over from whatever I am using at the moment, whatever that is.

My Computer and os details are as follows... Acer Aspire x3000, AMD Phenom II x3 710 processors, 4gig RAM, 450gig h/d, Linux Ubuntu 9.10, Kernal 2.6.31.20 generic-pae, Gnome 2.28.1

I feel that as I have problems with my Blood/Sugar meter it is going to be suggested that I install a small version of windows on this computer, that would certainly solve all three problems at a stroke but I am reluctant to install windows again unless I really have to, but would like the opinions of people that know a lot more than me.

Fedora Hardware :: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 / No 'b43' Network Card Was Recognized?

Nov 25, 2009

I have had a Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 since Fedora 10. In addition, both Fedora 10 and 11 wouldn't recognize the card with out third-party drivers. I was pretty excited when I booted the 12 Live CD and it recognized it at boot.

Since this is my lab box I thought its time to give Fedora 12 a try.

I did an DVD upgrade from 11 to 12 and rebooted. The Broadcom came up fine this time. I did a yum upgrade to finish from whatever was not on the DVD and rebooted. This time no 'b43' network card was recognized. I still had my third part driver files so I:

b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/ ./broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5/driver/wl_apsta_mimo.o

and a 'modprobe b43' and I had my card back.

I am sorry for dragging this out this far, but now every time the Fedora 12 box reboots I have to type in modprobe b43 to get my card to work. I did not have to do this for neither Fedora 10 nor 11.

I put a line in /etc/modprobe.conf - 'alias wlan0 b43' but I still don't get my wireless card until I type modprobe b43.
