Jul 24, 2010Just wondering if anyone could tell me how the models in alsa-base.conf ( see model list here )are configured. My issue is: My volume is extremely low. I have tried telling alsa to load profile for 3stack and 6stack configurations. However, most of the models listed for acer seem to be laptops. In my case I am running a ACER aspire ASE380 I have tried a few of the acer model listings with moderate success. My system is running ALC888 ( is it possible that its being identified incorrectly by the system? ) with 6 analog stack + 1 optic + 1 coax + 1 front mic + 1 front head-phone. I am wondering how the models differ from each other in the conf files. Can any one tell me where to look?

VLC (also use other video/audio players but this one is my main one.)
I have the speakers plugged into the headphone jack of the audio card. The problem is that I am stuck in either 6ch or 8ch mode, even with the headphone box checked and all relevant settings where they are suppose to be in alsamixer. I am missing sounds plus the volume is lower then it should be over all. Music, for example, does play but it is not the whole song. For example if I listen to one song, it stops all instruments and is suppose to play and guitar solo. But I don't hear it at all.
What I want to do is get it to work in 2ch. I am using Alsa but I have no idea what to edit, or if there is anything I can edit to get to 2ch. I do not want to use pulseaudio at all. One of the main reasons why I won't use Gnome (Ubuntu) right now. I have more headaches with that then I am with this problem.

Apr 12, 2011Well I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit along side Windows 7, and I've been unable to get any sounds working, apart from the log on sound. So I tried installing some drivers, and now there is no sound at all, and no sound devices show up in System-Preferences-Sound-hardware
I'm using the on board HD Audio (ALC 889A) and using the optical Audio out for 5.1 Surround sound.
I've tried just using the Stereo ( Green Jack ) out, and still nothing. The suggestions on the on the Ubuntu site, and the following post didn't seem to work either.

Jan 24, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, but so far I've been unable to get sound to work. I know my sound card is Realtek, because I've had to install the HD Audio Codec Driver when I was on Windows. I downloaded the driver for Linux and it is currently sitting in my home folder. When I tried to Code:sudo ./installthe driver, it failed for the following reason:

Mar 19, 2010I was running Ubuntu 9.04 and just upgraded to 9.10 recently. I see many others are having problems with their sound. I too do not have sound. I did get sound running briefly with an Alsa update, but it was muffled. In trying many other fixes, I again have no sound and can not resolve it. I am thinking of burning a new cd and doing a fresh install and starting over.
My lap top is an MSI GT725 US model with an HD4850 mobility graphics card. I dual boot between Vista 32 bit and Ubuntu.
Has anyone else had any luck getting the Realtek ATI sound working in 9.10?

May 28, 2010I have an MSI S420 with a realtek alc883 onboard. I upgraded from ubutu 8.04 to 10.4 recently, The sound worked in 8.04 although the mic did't work and the same thing in 8.10 (i went through all upgrades) it stopped working at all in 9.04 onwards.
If i did Lspci -v it did say the name of my card, ( I unmuted all in alsamixer and got the codecs but even a test soud won't work) I also dowloaded a driver from Realtek itself, that didn't work.
Then I edited alsabace.conf some more. I tried every one that could possily be it at [URL] including all that said MSI.
I then tried Lordraidens comprehensive sound guide from step 1 to step 5, I used the module-assistant and istalled a driver that was called "hda-realtek-codec" or so. It was the only appropriate one on the list.

i think ill give up and use the 8.10 that is still on a other partition

Oct 4, 2010I've been trying to get my surround sound(5.1) to work for the past couple of of days, followed a number of guides, but nothing seems to get it working at all. I'm connecting the speakers using 3 analogue audio cables, I have tested and they work fine under Windows. When I go into the Sound options in Ubuntu I don't see a 5.1 profile listed under the Hardware tab, only stereo(and that works fine).
The sound controller is a Realtek ALC892 built-in to my mobo(Gigabyte P55A-UD3).
Here is some info I've seen requested in other threads, I'm running 10.10 RC, but I can assure you it doesn't work under earlier versions.

Ubuntu :: Add RealTek ALC880 Driver So The Sound Will Work?
Oct 9, 2010Sound works with Jaunty Jackal. Does not work with Lucid Lynx. It appears that Lucid Lynx will only acknowledge that I have a modem as a sound card. I just want to add my RealTek ALC880 driver so the sound will work. I've made sure that I have audio privileges, I made sure that nothing is muted using alsamixer. I've been looking at threads and documentation for four days just to fix the sound issue and so I can be prepared in case this 'feature' ends up being continued in Maverick Meerkat and when I upgrade I can use M.M. with minimal fuss.

Slackware :: Getting Crackling And Intermittent Sound With Realtek ALC889 / Fix It?
Jan 19, 2010I've had a snap, crackle, pop coming from my speakers since I put this machine together, even now, with no reason for any sound to be coming from the speakers. Additionally, the crackling only becomes worse when I play ANY audio regardless of player or source, however the sound does just drop for a few seconds and then back and then off again when there is SUPPOSED to be audio. I understand not working at all, but "kinda" working is more confusing.
I'm running slack64 with the with an updated kernel from current, even though the rest of the machine is stock 13_64. The problem was the same with the original 2.6.29.6 kernel.

General :: MCP61 Audio - KDE4 Only Recognized The Output Device As ALC1200 Analog
Dec 26, 2010I finally decided to transition to a 64-bit install (AMD64). (same machine, just reinstalling as a 64-bit kernel starting w/ a Debian squeeze netinstall image) My audio chipset is nvidia MCP61, and it was working perfectly under a 32-bit kernel (I did the transition because a poorly-written system backup script (my fault) hosed /usr, /bin, and /sbin) When everything was up and running:
*: KDE4 only recognized the output device as ALC1200 Analog
*: kmix only had a single channel(master)
*: alsamixergui did recognize all the channels
*: some games (sauerbraten, for example) had no sound in KDE4.
*: some games (warzone2100, for example) did have sound in KDE4.
*: the games that had no sound in KDE4 did have sound in fluxbox.
I removed the following packages (some of which I had installed to try to get audio working properly):

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Over HDMI With Nvidia ION ?
Jan 4, 2010I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. The strange thing is that everything works fine in a Live disc, but once I do a fresh install of that Live disc I get no sound, even though my configuration is exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.

May 6, 2011coming back to Ubuntu after not liking v8, installed 10.10 and upgraded to 11.04 during install process. I have a nvidia GTX 250 running video to a monitor and a tv and wanted to use my green center channel analog out on the back to send audio to the tv. (no room for hdmi, had to use VGA).
I can't enable sound, I've Googled the crap out of this and have found my sound to be nVidia MCP51.
I'm not very Linux savvy, so if you need me to run commands please let me know what they are. Thank you for your assistance.

It still doesn't work. By compiling from alsa from source, it seems worse, the sound preference even couldn't pick up device. Also in current /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz. I could not find the module name for this nvidia or CirrusLogic device.
