Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Card Is Not Detected

Jul 17, 2010

I am attempting to get ubuntu working on my system.I have tried on previous systems without success, hopefully it works out this time.Currently my only major issue with it is I cannot get any sounds to play.I use a Logitech G35 usb headset and onboard audio (GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H motherboard, Realtek ALC892 audio chipset).Ideally, I'd like to be able to listen from either source, though just getting one working would be great.Ubuntu is currently not detecting any sound.

Using aplay -l, it said no sound card found. Using lspci -v, so sound devices were listed.I am a complete noob to ubuntu, I had to research to figure out what to do with 'aplay -l' (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal, type command in terminal). My Windows troubleshooting skills seem largely useless in a Linux environment.

Hardware :: Integrated Sound Card Not Detected (Ubuntu)

Apr 8, 2010

I have a DFI RS482 mobo with integrated sound. I am making a car puter and only have a 2GB CF card, so I installed a server install of Ubuntu. Then I got xserver-xorg, mplayer, and fluxbox. I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia driver. Mplayer spit out tons of sound errors and that's when I realized the server install has no sound. So I installed the 'alsa', 'pulseaudio' and 'pavucontrol' packages. Now mplayer does not complain and acts like it is playing sound, but nothing happens sound-wise. Pavucontrol shows mplayer as playing sound and the volume as unmuted. However the PCM output is going to "dummy output" and the configuration tab says there are no cards to be configured.

So I think my sound card is not being detected. I don't know what to do at this point.
lspci shows "Multimedia audio controler: ATI Technologies inc. IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 80)"
alsamixer fails on "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory"
lsmod | grep 97 returns a bunch of stuff, but I'm not sure what it is.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Edit And Sound Card Not Detected

Aug 6, 2010

I'm a Linux noob, so please go easy on me! I've been desperate to get rid of my Windows install for a while now and have finally started to make the move over, but have a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 install. I've scoured the help documentation and forum for days now without managing to resolve my problem, and have finally resorted to posting my problem. So I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.

1 Installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Viglen Furtura S200) but the only way I have been able to get it to install and boot properly is edit the GRUB with the following acpi=off i915.modeset xforcevesa. I had to add these parameters even to boot the live CD as well. I think I'm right in assuming that this is forcing the use of a generic graphics driver, consequently leaving some visual features unavailable. I'm not really sure what turning acpi off is doing. Is it possible to resolve this? Is this the cause of problem number 2?

2 After install there is no sound. Sound preferences shows no hardware and ALSAmixer is empty when opened. I have followed the sound troubleshooting through and it looks like my sound card is actually being picked up on the board, but I fall at the point of checking the loaded ALSA Modules as my report shows that none are loaded?!

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Sound Card Not Detected On Boot When USB Headphones Plugged In?

Mar 23, 2010

If I boot CentOS (5, up to date) without my USB headphones are plugged in, all sound output goes to the sound card. But if I have the headphones plugged in when I boot, all output goes to them, and the sound card does not seem to be recognised at all.

Is there any way I can force the sound card to be recognised, and chosen as the default device, when booting with the headphones plugged in? If I have booted with the headphones plugged in, and then I unplug them, go into System|Preferences|Sound, and press the Test button with sound playback set to autodetect, I get a dialog with the message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

Then I started System|Administration|Soundcard detection, and it detected both Intel and Radeon sound cards, but its test button did not produce any sound for either. I moved the Intel device to the top of the list in the Settings tab, and then ran "Reload audio drivers" in the System tab. I got an error message saying I needed to reboot, but I didn't. At this point, the test buttons in the Sound test tab, and in System|Preferences|Sound started working OK. Do I have to go through this rigmarole every time I boot with the headphones plugged in?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sound With New Sound Card - Web Browser Is Unable To Play Any Sound

Mar 24, 2010

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.

I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Ubuntu :: Graphics Card Could Not Be Detected

Oct 13, 2010

Ubuntu is not the problem; I don't think. I'm running Maverick 10.10. With my computer I have to unplug and plug back in the graphics card every time I want to start up the computer so I usually keep it running 24-7. There was a power surge and when I got it back running, once it reached the load boot screen and it was stuck their for awhile. Then it instantly sent me to x-term. So I tried logging in and typing:

sudo start gdm

It said it was already running but I could not display anything or login the normal way. I restarted and the same thing happened. I managed to get to Recovery Mode and I fixed broken packages and then I ran it in low graphics mode. It said that the display, monitors, input, and graphics card could not be detected. If there was a way to resize the screen to something more tolerably than 800x600 in low graphics mode I'd be glad to hear it. I could at least stick around to using that until I can fix some stuff up.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Tuner Card Not Feeding Sound Through Onboard Sound?

Aug 9, 2011

I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.

Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.

Ubuntu :: Sound Doesn't Work In Wine - X-fi Card No Shows Up In The Sound Control Panel

Sep 26, 2010

In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.

The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.

EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.

EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.

Ubuntu Installation :: Video Card Not Detected?

Feb 6, 2010

Working on a friend's PC, which was previously running XP and got a very nasty virus infection. I convinced him to try Ubuntu, showed him the interface running on my own machine and he was hooked. Backed up all his data to network, completely erased the hard disk and install Ubuntu. Sounds easy, right?

Installed 9.10, it didn't detect the video card and xorg.conf was missing from /etc/X11. After some messing around trying to get it to work, I realised that the sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg command wasn't working properly and didn't produce the menu shown in the screenshots. After some digging I found that this was a bug in 9.10, so to make the job easier, I wiped the drive again and started again on 9.04.

With 9.04, at least the xorg.conf file was there, but had no entries under configured video device. I tried adding "vesa", "via", "openchrome" (all on separate attempts), all to no avail. I retried the dpkg -reconfigure command above. still no menu.

Now several days into this "easy" install, I rolled back to the LTS release (8.04 - hardy) and installed that instead. Still no video card detection, and resolution is obstinately stuck at 800x600. Tried the same string of tests again, and now admitting defeat The relevant output from lspci is: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated Video (rev 01)

The output from xrandr is:
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Card Not Detected

Jun 16, 2010

I'm in serious need of some help. The network adapter on the motherboard of my main machine apparently failed about noon today. This machine serves as the firewall and router for my home office LAN, and so it has two network adapters, the second being a PCI card installed in the only PCI slot of the mobo. The mobo's adapter served the WAN while the PCI card serves the LAN.Since the mobo has only one PCI slot, none of the other PCI cards I have on hand could be used. Instead, I pulled an unused PCI-e dialup modem card from the machine, and bought a PCI express gigabit card to put in its place.

The problem is that the machine (running Hardy 8.04.4 LTS) does not recognize the new card at all. Running lspci shows only the old PCI card that serves the LAN. Similarly, running "sudo lshw" shows only the old PCI card together with a virtual adapter that's part of my VirtualBox installation on that system.I then dual-booted into Vista Home and attempted to install the new card there, using the CD that came with it. Vista detected the card and asked for the disk, but then was unable to find any drivers on the disk! The box says the card is from Star Tech, and the instruction sheet says its model is ST1000SPEX.If anyone can point me to the correct module to add to the startup list and/or remove from the blacklist, that may get me going again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Card And Resolution Not Detected

Sep 6, 2010

I have 2 problems (don't know if they are connected)To start with, it's a laptop with an onboard Radion 3200 and it has another ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 built in. I have an external screen attached to my laptop. (1920x1080)When Ubuntu first booted it asked me if I wanted to install proprietary drivers, so I did that. Now when I took a look in the control center it showed my two monitors but they were both attached to the 3200 and I can't seem to find anything about the other (better) card. It does not appear in the proprietary drivers, I can't (I think) select it in the configuration utility.
