General :: Sound Card Not Detected In Fedora-9 - Compaq Presario CQ040
Jun 9, 2009
I've a laptop of Compaq Presario CQ040, I installed Fedora-9 but found that there is no sound. I ran lsmod, lspci and aplay -l command and the respective output is below:
How to configure the sound card and get it working?
I have an old compaq presario 2100 (amd athlon) laptop that came with windows xp. it can't deal with xp any more so i put mandriva on it and let my mother in law use it for card games. now it won't even boot mandriva.
it says something about a 1720 SMART error. i ran the hdd test and it gave me a code: 1# imminent failure.
it will run mandriva off the install disk but I want to make this as easy as possible for my mother in law to play her games. I don't think she'd like to deal with all the steps involved with running it off the install disk. the problem with that is that the install wizard runs every time i turn it on.
will i be able to do something to the effect that my mother in law will be able to easily boot up and play her card games on the laptop?
I have an older Compaq Presario S6000CL, specs for it are here:

I am trying to get SME Server set up as a private server/gateway. Problem is no matter what I do I can only get one ethernet working at a time and only to the internet, not the local network. I tried both SME Server 7.4 and 8.0 beta 5 witht he same result. Now of course I checked the ethernet cards. The two I have now on it do work. One of them is the onboard ethernet the other one is in the second pci slot. They jsut don't work at the same time. (also I am familiar with SME and I had it configured correctly. Even if I messed up the order of the cards it is easy enough to just get up and switch the cables, reboot, etc.) I thought maybe there was a jumper setting or an over ride of some sort to let me use two ethernet cards. <I previously had all of this set up with an old HP computer (came with windows 98 originally.) But that computer decided it was time to retire to the road side.> It seems that it should just work. Any ideas on what I am missing or what I can do?
Edit:Spent another hour trying to get it to work and still nothing. It is picking up both ethernet cards just fine, I just updated sme 8 beta5 so the internet is working fine. I just can't get the local ethernet card to do anything at all, even though it is showing up as a green ok at boot. I checked the bios and I am not seeing anything there. It had an option to enable/disable LAN (which is enabled but I tried both and using to PCI ethernet cards. Didn't do anything different.) It has a Local LAN boot rom option, tried it enabled and disabled (Disabled now.) and nothing. I turned off the serial and parallel ports (doesn't make a difference either way.) I looked all over the motherboard and the only thing I can find is the jumper to reset the password. If a computer that was at least 12 years old could run SME and don't see why this one can't, it is half that age and a much better computer hardware wise.
I'm not great with computers. I have no clue how to fix this kind of thing. I went into Alsamixer, and it says my card is an Intel 82801CA-ICH3. I have updated all of the files that needed updated, turned up the master volume and it still doesn't work. Somebody please explain this to me in words I can understand.
is there a program or something to enable my presario 2100 to read a linksy's program disc? the disk says it should run automatically, but the comp keeps sending an error message that its either a multi-part drive? or its a zipfile and it cannot recognize.
I installed Fedora 12 on my Compaq Presario c700 Notebook recently and had a great install. I installed ndiswrapper and installed the inf file for my broadcom 4311 driver through ndiswrapper as well. The installation of the driver appeared to go smoothly.
The only thing is that I still cannot connect to the internet. I aliased the driver as well to wlan0. I can not figure out what is currently the problem. I tried reinstalling the driver and I keep receive a message stating the driver is already installed.
I installed Fedora 12 on my Compaq Presario SR1230NX. Anyway, everytime I try to enable desktop effects, my computer would freeze. I own a Compaq Presario and here's the info I got on the intergrated video card...thingy. XD
Code: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] (rev 01)
I just installed helena on my compaq presario cq61-223sa but i can't get the altec Lansing speakers to work and my internal mic as well. I'm fairly new at linux and have tried looking for drivers but i couldn't find any.
I have been trying to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx using Live CD on this machine, a compaq Presario SR5010NX, with Celeron D 3.46Ghz CPU. Bios Version American Megatrends, Inc. 5.18, 2007; 2 gigs of RAM with approx. 140 gigs of hard disk space total useable. Has Realtek High Definition audio, graphic chipset Intel 82945G family; Soft data fax modem with smart CP (internal modem). It is connected to my DSL modem/router, Netgear DGN2000, with ethernet cable (as are my other two computers).
I start the installation. Finally the desktop shows up. As soon as I start trying to navigate, my mouse freezes and that's as far as I can go.
Just out of curiosity, I also tried to use my Mint 8 CD. It did the same thing. Gets the desktop up, then freezes. I am so frustrated because I really want Ubuntu on this machine. I planned on wiping out Vista Home Basic and giving the whole thing to Ubuntu.
Hardware : Intel atom (COM)Audio - ALC 888OS : Ubuntu 9.04Observation : Sound Card not getting detected.-> I downloaded High Def. Audio Codec as "LinuxPkg_5.13rc9.tar.bz2" from RealTek site, compiled and installed the drivers.-> But while installation I got a GUI saying "No PnP or PCI audio card detected".-> lspci command shows all other pci connected devics except sound card(ALC888).->I tried recompilation of Linux kernel to make HDA Codec as a Built-in modules (built-in ALSA driver support) ,but still there was no change in behaviour.
I have installed Windows7,and Redhat9 next installed but set as default.Problems:- Sound card is not detected using sound card detector.(I faced no such problem when i had installed Fedora3,and Fedora11) -Modem is not detected too when querying modem. -Could not find in PC (when Fedora was installed)or find and download needed codec packs and plugins so nearly most media could not be played.
hello experts! i have a problem with my sound card (Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio), Got the driver from Creative site. The problem is that the card is detected but no sound is produced, it's not muted, i already checked. also tried the latest pulseaudio but nothing seem to work. what could be the problem?
After using Ubuntu for a while I have decided I wanted to do a fresh install onto my PC, however being rather old it (about 6 years old), It seems I cannot get any recent kernels to run on the system. As such, I cannot get the live CD to boot. After searching for hours to find a solution I have found nothing.
Upgrading also breaks the system as well, So to do so wouldn't work.[URL].. with addition of a 256MB RAM chip and starting with a 512 rather then the 256 stated on the page. and a ATI Radeon 9800.
Is there anyway I can get newer kernels/Live CD to boot? I've tried all options i've found in other threads but no go.
I have a presario compaq computer and I don't know how to get my wireless to work while using ubuntu. Do i need to install things or what is it that i need to do?
I'm new in this, but i'm rellay starting to enjoy linux. But, i have one huge problem, that is really important for me. When i plug a HDMI cable in my computer, it doesnt show any pictures on my TV. In nVidia controlpanel it shows in Xserver Display configuration. I tryed to check the "TwinView" box, but it still doesnt work. Here's som info that i learned was important to get help:
I recently purchased a Conexant USB modem to use in my Compaq Presario M2000 laptop. (The laptop already has a built-in modem that's really a Winmodem. )I plugged it in, installed the driver, and it found the built-in modem....but not the USB modem. I'm looking for commands and packages I can try to further diagnose and rectify this problem. This would be a nice-to-have so I don't have to boot up Windows on the laptop just to be able to use the modem in places that don't have wired or wireless internet.
I'm trying to install Lubuntu 11.04 CD on a Compaq Presario M2000 Laptop to replace XP. Processor: Intel Pentium Celeron M RAM: 256mb Existing O/S XP SP3 (boots & runs but is very slow) Hard Drive 40GB (28Gb free)
Installation hangs about 1 minute after selecting language in both try Lubuntu & install Lubuntu modes. Have also left the laptop running all night to see if it was just a slow install. Have tried various other disks (Xbuntu, Puppy, Mint, Lubuntu 10.04), which have worked on other PC/laptops ok, but all stall after the language settings. Have tried burning the Lunbuntu iso with both Windows & Ubuntu at slow speeds & have verified the burnt iso. The laptop BIOS cannot be set to boot from usb, so an external CD or USB stick installation may not work? The BIOS has been updated to the latest one on the Compaq web site this morning. Although I have installed a few flavours of Linux on various hardware, I'm still a real Linux newbie. Can Lubuntu be installed within Windows, but still format the hard drive to ext2/3 ?
New member here. Was introduced to Ubuntu by the IT guy at my last place of work and liked it so much, I ran WUBI on my laptop for a couple of months before taking the plunge and today fully converting my Compaq Presario CQ56 Laptop to the full Ubuntu OS.
The only issue I have is I have no sound whatsoever. I have seen some suggestions where you should check the hardware drivers and when I do that the only driver that appears is for ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. It also says this driver is active and currently in use.
So, can anyone else offer some help. I love the system and the way it does everything but it needs sound. Incidentally when I ran WUBI (while Windows 7 was on there) I did not have a problem with the sound!
where i can download driver for my laptop. i just install ubuntu in my laptop and i dont hve how to make my laptop connect to the wireless internet. and i also using ATI radeon graphic card.
i'm trying to install avira av on a compaq presario sr1103wm with lucid lynx. i've tried using the archive manager, but i end up with a package on the desktop that i don't know what to do with. i've also followed techie mo's tutorial to the best of my ability. i just seem to have come up short. below is the output of the terminal. it shows SOME promise, just not an end result.
ed@ed-desktop:~$ sudo su [sudo] password for ed: root@ed-desktop:/home/ed# cd Desktop root@ed-desktop:/home/ed/Desktop# tar -xvf antivir-workstation-pers.tar.gz antivir-workstation-pers-2.1.12-19/
I'm trying to breathe life into this old laptop; so I installed Ubuntu on it and ran into a problem loading it in Desktop mode.
When I want to start into it normally, it gets to the home screen and does a quick frame skip, kind of like an old VHS tape, and then fails to load the toolbars on top and bottom.
Loading into safe mode works great, but no wireless option seems to be available in safe mode?
The normal boot even gets to the "Ubuntu!" welcome sound, but... then nothing. I looked up a few Linux keyboard shortcuts and none of them function. So.
Also did the updates in safe mode. Update Manager did NOTHING when I clicked "install updates" button, so I did it through the terminal sudo get-updates/upgrades.
On friday (5-28-10) I installed ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, and everything was just peachy, wireless worked and everything.Today (saturday 5-29-10) booted up to find that my wireless wouldn't work. I plugged up to Ethernet and that worked fine, i updated and everything, still no wireless. I google the problem, and have tried everything under the sun to get this darn wireless card to work. I'm pretty sure it's atheros but i am not sure. when i go to system -> admin -> hardware and drivers nothing shows up
I acquired an older hp compaq presario computer version 6310us, and initially installed mint, followed by Ubuntu 9.04. Neither one recognized the onboard ethernet port. I checked the bios, and LAN is enabled. It is also enabled in the drop down menu from the toolbar on the desktop. The cable works fine on other computers, and the light on the ethernet port flashes like it does when the cable is connected. I'm new to linux, so not sure what to do to get the connection working.
I installed Ubuntu 10.4 on my laptop compaq presario CQ50 I cannot go online, because the drivers does not exist ? where can I download them? the wireless flash blue by the way, and it was working before I switch to Linux is there anyway to find driver for my wireless compatible?
