I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and the sound on my machine no longer works. I was previously using the OSS for sound. I'd like the sound solution that requires the minimal effort and I don't necessarily need to run OSS again. Ubuntu is installed on a Dell Optiplex 960.
I upgraded my system from 8.04 to 10.04.Now I keep getting errors saying that my adobe nonfree installation is bad. The worst part is that when I try to uninstall the Adobe package to start from scratch, it says that the problem is so bad that it can't be uninstalled, but must be re-installed.Of course when I try to re-install it, I get errors saying it's corrupt.I'm caught in a chicken and egg situation here.
Also, sound no longer works on my system.I think this is most likely a symptom of the first problem, but I'll just put it out there.I've read the other threads explaining how to fix this, but nothing works.
I have an Intel i7 with CentOS x64 installed, with the intention of using it as the host O/S with VMWare Workstation to run a number of virtual machines. I had this all working until the kernel was updated to 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5, Now I can no longer start any VMs. I have tried reinstalling CentOS, updating it first, then installing VMWare Workstation - no different. I have tried running as root - no different.
Is anyone else aware of this problem? Does anyone else run VMWare on CentOS x64?
On my initial setup I follow the Comprehensive sound guide that is posted on the ubuntu forums because I wanted to get the spdif work Optical out with surround. After a while I was able some how to get it to work and but my headphones would no longer output sound so in an effort to get sound back to the headphones I maanged to ruin the the settings for the spdif. My question is how can I get spdif back and switch between headphones and spdif.I there no way to figure it out how do I purge every file that has to do with sound and recompile. ( THe comprehensive sound guide showed how to purge the alsa utils but that didnt work if someone know why please let me know and if you could explain.)
When I run update manager, it gives me an error message saying:
Code:
This can be caused by: * A previous update which didn't complete * Problems with some of the installed software * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu * Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu if I click partial upgrade, it looks like it did during the upgrade, then says:
Code:
There are no upgrades available for your system. The upgrade will now be canceled. if I click close from the first "not all updates can be installed" dialog, it says:
Code:
It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first. running the suggested line gives the following output:
Code:
In Synaptic, fixing broken packages does nothing. Mark All Updates > Apply seems to work, but I'd still like to figure out why Update Manager does not?
The server runs# uname -r2.6.18-128.4.1.el5However, today I executed yum update kernel*due to security advisory. I was just about to reboot the system when I realized that it runs VMWare Server Instance that will most likely fail to restart after kernel upgrade (I had a hard time fixing it after previous kernel update). Now I want to keep 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5 after reboot.I see that new kernel is scheduled for booting:
I have been using a ARM device with 512MB ram and flash to send messages via Bluetooth to everyone in the proximity. I am doing this with OpenProximity (Python) and it worked for the last week, it did stop for two times but since I didn't have time to find the cause, I just rebooted it (Windows style ) and it worked again, but suddenly it stopped working again last Saturday. When I did /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart it did not say it failed or something, but when I did /etc/init.d/bluetooth status it said "bluetooth is not running ... failed!". This is what I got in the syslog:
Code: Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Bluetooth daemon 4.60 Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Starting SDP server Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Starting experimental netlink support Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Failed to find Bluetooth netlink family Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Failed to init netlink plugin Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Can't create GN bridge
[Code]...
You'll probably note that the first message is version 4.60 and the second one 4.63, this is because I tried to upgrade, but that did not work completely, but the error above is the same as first before the upgrade.
Don't know if it matters, but I am using Debian Squeeze and the output of uname -a is: Linux debian 2.6.32.2 #1 PREEMPT Fri Dec 18 22:54:28 MST 2009 armv5tel GNU/Linux. Hope someone know how this could happen suddenly, and even better, knows how to fix it
EDIT: Forgot to say, I am using a SENA Parani UD100 Bluetooth USB Adapter which uses the Toshiba Bluetooth stack.
UPDATE: It won't crash until the Bluetooth stick is inserted, so it should be a driver problem?
I am running 10.10 on a 21.5 inch imac. I just ran some updates and rebooted, turned on rhythmbox to play some tunes and realized there is no sound. Tried ....., no yield. Tried a different user account still no sound. SO I rebooted into osx and I have sound. Its therefore a software issue for sure. I plugged in headphones and changed to the appropriate output in the settings manager, sound came out, but out of phase. What going on here? any ideas would be awesome.
I updated steam and it no longer works. When I tried to load it up Wine comes up and then closes. Im pretty sure this has to deal with the new steam interface. But Im not entirely sure. So I would like to know if any one is having issues currently?
I've Ubuntu 9.10 with 2.6.31-20 kernel.Sound kernel module is loaded, but doesn't works ;((. I have not got any errors and all programs (e.g. mplayer) thinks that sound driver is present and works OK but I can't hear a sound...A part from lspci -vvnn
I updated to the latest available kernel for Kubuntu 10.04 today (2.6.32-24). When the system rebooted, it refused to connect to my wireless network. So far I have been unsuccessful in persuading it to connect. ifconfig shows the existence of the ethernet connection as eth0, and Network Manager also seems to accept the existence of the ethernet port - so why has it suddenly chosen now to stop connecting to the wired network?
I updated wubi kernel(ubuntu 10.04) After restart, i selected ubuntu then my system reboots. Then i select ubuntu then my system reboots. I dont know what to do now,
I have a new acer machine which runs fine on 10.10 mythbuntu desktop livecd. Install seemed fine.
Then I ran an update and on reboot I get a kernel panic error. Research on this reveals it as a very deep subject which can consume many hours, so I opted to reinstall.
This time with ubuntu 10.10. I've tried different CDs, liveusb. Same errors.
So, the question is this - where do I concentrate my efforts - somewhere ubuntu doesn't like this machine, or grub. Does a reinstall overwrite the grub install too? Or do I have a bogus grub install I need to purge before I will get anywhere.
Here's what to do right after applying the latest kernel security patch (2.6.34.7-0.4) to get the ATI driver back to work. Do not reboot yet make sure the update installed the headers and sources for kernel 2.6.34.7-0.4: rpm -qa | grep 2.6.34.7-0.4 should print the files in red on a 64bit system:
I logged on my ibm600e with SUSE 11.1 + on Thanksgiving and auto update started and is still running today 12/02/2009. Pentium cpu is at 77 to 97% 93% memory usage plus some swap usage. Ethernet and wireless are activeily working
also separately the CD ROM is not detecting/detected except by the hardware report I sent in. My external Zip100 Is visible. as is the plug in floppy drive
i'm using this guide videos - howto: debian linux kernel compilation, part 1 and the author says i need kernel 2.6.26 this version of kernel doesnt longer exist in kernel.org website and the only 2.6.26 i found is a patch here. should i use the patch? or download another version of kernel?
I just updated my kernel from 2.6.32-21 to 2.6.32-22 today. Now I am getting no sound. I have checked my mixer levels with both kmix and alsamixer. Nothing appears to be amiss. I tried rebooting with the old kernel and still no sound.
I have a Hardy which last night asked for updates that included kernel changes. Today I find I no longer can connect using WIFI and have no sound. The GUIs are just not there and it's as if the controllers themselves have disappeared. For example lshw -C network reveals a Cisco Airon Wireless, but it's not listed as a wireless device, just as network controller. Can anyone advice me on how to approach this? Is it possible to revert changes or something?
After I upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-31 to 2.6.32-32 and then 2.6.32-33, my sound started to lag(the lag occurred on 2.6.32-32 and stayed to 2.6.32-33, but it worked perfectly ever before). Sound does work in itself, but frequently lags and pieces that were already played before will be played again, pretty much like an old vinyl that occasionally jumps or hangs. When I start to replay something, it does not put out anything for a second or two and then starts, when I stop it will keep playing for the exact same amount of time. So, sound is synced to videos(video replay works perfectly well and without the lag). Problem is definitely related to the sound drivers, not to replay software or any buggy file. It occurs with DVDs, Flash Videos in Firefox, music in gmusicbrowser, movie files with VLC, whatever you want. I never experienced such problems with any kernel before. Although I've seen many others posting similar problems, I cannot see any valid solution for myself.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I sure don't want to go to 10.10 for the second.
I reinstalled Alsa and Pulse, no joy. My sound card is recognized correctly by alsa and can be found in aplay -l. It's a generic onboard surround sound device, although I only use stereo channels.
I am experiencing sound problems after an upgrade to kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE from kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i686.PAE in several games like Neverwinter Nights (linux binaries) and Warcraft III (PlayOnLinux). The sound stops and changes into a very choppy annoying sound. When I boot into the old kernel the problems are gone.
