View 8 RepliesOn my initial setup I follow the Comprehensive sound guide that is posted on the ubuntu forums because I wanted to get the spdif work Optical out with surround. After a while I was able some how to get it to work and but my headphones would no longer output sound so in an effort to get sound back to the headphones I maanged to ruin the the settings for the spdif. My question is how can I get spdif back and switch between headphones and spdif.I there no way to figure it out how do I purge every file that has to do with sound and recompile. ( THe comprehensive sound guide showed how to purge the alsa utils but that didnt work if someone know why please let me know and if you could explain.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and the sound on my machine no longer works. I was previously using the OSS for sound. I'd like the sound solution that requires the minimal effort and I don't necessarily need to run OSS again. Ubuntu is installed on a Dell Optiplex 960.

I upgraded my system from 8.04 to 10.04.Now I keep getting errors saying that my adobe nonfree installation is bad. The worst part is that when I try to uninstall the Adobe package to start from scratch, it says that the problem is so bad that it can't be uninstalled, but must be re-installed.Of course when I try to re-install it, I get errors saying it's corrupt.I'm caught in a chicken and egg situation here.
Also, sound no longer works on my system.I think this is most likely a symptom of the first problem, but I'll just put it out there.I've read the other threads explaining how to fix this, but nothing works.
Using OPenSuse 11.2 KDE 4.4 on MSI CX600 laptop. Sound only works in the hardware test, nowhere else. Everything else seems fine, even wireless just worked after an running an update.

I have a Gigabyte mainbord with an Intel IHC9 sound chip. When I configure it via YAST the test-sound plays fine, and when I issue:
sudo speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
some friendly voice starts speaking as well.
But:
speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
doesn't bring about anything sound-like.

I have quite a strange problem with Skype and Opensuse. First problem was that when I used microphone on Audigy 4 (from some reason recognised as Audigy 2) the sound which people received from me was very chirpy. This problem was solved easily, I just turned my on-board sound system on and started using micorphone from integrated card. And here comes my weird problem. Microphone works all right, but only for short period. After some time after I start talking to someone on Skype the microphone turns itself off, but I can still hear my interlocutors. The only solution is to go to Yast and restart sound system or to restart whole computer, both of which are not real solutions, but well, they sort of work. I'm using Opensuse 11.2 x64.

I have HDMI sound enabled by default in System Configuration (Music, Movies and System Sounds), but the only multimedia application that uses it is DragonPlayer. (System Sounds work fine also)Kaffeine still wants to use my INTEL card as does Amarok; VLC Player just complains that my AlsaLib file isn't up to date.I am running opensuse 11.3, KDE 4.5.90 (4.6 RC1) Kernel 2.6.34-7-0.5-desktop sound is outputting to a Samsung 42" 1080p TV.
Sound/Video card is an ATI RV710 (Radeon HD 4350). What does DragonPlayer do that the other three applications do not?How can I configure Kaffeine and VLC to output via the HDMIAlso since doing a system update to KDE 4.5.90 my screen blanks every ten minutes, I have tried to disable screen saver and screen power save in power management, however still i can't stop the system blanking every 10 minutes any clues? Finally DragonPlayer is now crashing after every video has finished playing before i can start the next
Updated old Eeepc 1005HAB to Jessie. Used to have a text file:
xrandr --output LVSD1 --mode 1024x600 --fb 1024x768 --panning 1024x768"
that I could run (twice in a row, it needed) to allow the scroling of the screen to see the bottom 1/4.
This no longer works.
Are you running Lenny? If yes, try this:
Be sure that there is an active X.
Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to tty1.
Login with your normal username and password.
Enter the command: "xrandr -d :0.0 -q"
You should be rewarded with information about your current screen.
Are you running Squeeze? If yes, try the above procedure and please explain to me what this means: No protocol specified

I installed 64bit flash last week when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on my new laptop, and for the past week it has worked without issues.
However a couple of day ago it simply stopped showing flash videos on sites such as ..... etc. I think there might have been a ream of updates around the time this happened but my memory is a little vague.
I have since tried installing the each of the 3 flash codecs in turn that Firefox recommends but these will not install, failing with an exit status of 2. After I tried this I followed the 64bit flash instructions on the Wiki once more to get back to the point when it previously worked but alas this has been of no help.
I have also tried loading flash videos in Chromium and these suffer from the same issue. Anyone have any ideas what could have caused flash to suddenly stop working?
I have been using mencoder to record audio and video from my Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. I've been using the following wrapper script under 10.04:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
outFile=$(date +%Y-%m-%d)
mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=800:height=600:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/audio1 -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts
[Code]....
The video and audio work in other applications, but for some reason mencoder isn't using them. I don't like Cheese because it seems like I can't get equally high framerates at good resolution, and besides I want to be able to run this from the command line.
For some reason, just shortly ago, the terminals, konsole, etc. will not accept the lowercase letter 'e' as input for some reason, not even when pasting, e.g.
a paste of file:///usr/share/applications/kde4/konsole.desktop
becomes fil:///usr/shar/applications/kd4/konsol.dsktop
on the command line. Weird.
For everything else I have tried at this point on the computer, the lowercase letter 'e' is just fine (this message being an example);Has some configuration file for terminals (konsole, xterm, Yakuake) or whatever got messed up and I need to correct it?
Testing an upgrade Etch>Lenny 5.08, and one issue I've found is that "sudo konqueror" in a teminal no longer gives root priveleges, instead konqueror starts with limited rights. It also seems that using a .desktop shortcut, an attempt to run konqueror under any credentials other than the logged-on user fails.
Yet, 'sudo kwrite' works. Anyone met this before, or know why?
It all started Tuesday morning. I woke up and turned my computer on. Normally I just leave it on all the time, but I turned it off the previous night for some reason. When I turned it on, everything worked fine for about 10 minutes, until my monitor said "Monitor Working Out of Scan Range." I messed with the settings on the monitor to try and get it back, but to no avail. Restarting would make it work, but for even shorter periods. It eventually would display the manufacturer image (Everex), and then go dead again with the same message.
I thought it was the monitor at first, and got a new one. The new one is a wide screen 18.5 inch Dell IN1910N. The problem persisted, so I knew it wasn't this. I kinda figured it out when I started smelling something burning coming from my computer, and discovered it was the graphics card I installed awhile back. It is the pci ATI X1550, and its fan no longer worked.
So I figured, well, I will just remove it and go back to the onboard video. Doing this worked fine, until I got to the stage where it tried to boot to the Xserver, and then the computer just hangs. No sounds indicate I ever get to a logon screen or anything.
Now, I tried commands like sudo dpkg-configure xserver-xorg, and it asked me a lot of questions about my keyboard, but didn't fix my video. I also tried the "Xfix" option in recovery mode, and it purged all the old fglrx drivers, but that didn't help either.
I am currently using a live CD (I was doing straight command-line for awhile, after I also played hell getting the wireless working). I tried literally coping and pasting the entire contents of the X11 folder over, but that didn't work either (the xorg.conf files were the same anyway). I don't know what to do to get my old partition to boot X correctly.
All the commands I was copying before are not in my terminal now, and I'm not sure exactly what command-line information you need. I know that Openchrome is supposed to run the onboard VIA video, but I don't recall the command that tells me everything about it.
I switched my htpc from windows xp to ubuntu 10.10 and since i switched my audio no longer works. these are my current stats. Please help im new to Linux so im not sure quite what to do. [URL]

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed xubuntu version 10. My sound card is a Yamaha dS-1S, and seems to be properly configured. Alsa mixer doesn't indicates any error. However, I can't manage to get any sound. I have checked that jacks are correctly plugged.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can play sound files with aplay, esdplay, and vlc, but I don't get any sound from iceweasel and chromium.
I installed a squeeze base system (without gnome and without the standard system utilities), then added (using --no-install-recommends) xserver-xorg-core, xdm, fluxbox, alsa-base, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, iceweasel, chromium-browser. Here I checked for sound and there was none from the browsers. I have since installed vlc, esound-clients, alsaplayer-esd, gstreamer0.10-alsa, and other software that didn't look sound-related and didn't change the symptoms.
Setting ICEWEASEL_DSP to "aoss" or "esddsp" doesn't help. Neither does "chmod -R 777 /dev/{audio,dsp,midi,mixer,snd}". snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss are loaded. Both my account and root are in group "audio". Running the browsers as root doesn't help.
This is the output of chromium:
In case it makes any difference, all of this happens in a qemu-kvm virtual machine with an emulated es1370 soundcard. Same with sb16 soundcard.
I would prefer not to install everything vaguely related to sound in the repositories in the hope of things fixing themselves. That's just ugly, plus I have only 200MB free space left.
I upgraded my openSUSE 11.2 KDE to version 11.3, and now my Canon Pixma ip1800 Printer no longer prints. It appears to me that the upgrade may have removed one or more files that the printer needs, but I don't know.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running 10.10 on a 21.5 inch imac. I just ran some updates and rebooted, turned on rhythmbox to play some tunes and realized there is no sound. Tried ....., no yield. Tried a different user account still no sound. SO I rebooted into osx and I have sound. Its therefore a software issue for sure. I plugged in headphones and changed to the appropriate output in the settings manager, sound came out, but out of phase. What going on here? any ideas would be awesome.
